Category Review: GED software for Mac OS X

This MacNews Category Review looks at GED software for the Mac. Products covered are Math Media, MCH Interactive: GED and Test Pilot.

General Educational Development (or GED) tests are a battery of five tests which, when passed, certifies that the taker has American or Canadian high school level-academic skills. To pass the GED Tests and earn a GED credential, test takers must score higher than 40 percent of graduating high school seniors nationwide. Some jurisdictions require that students pass additional tests, such as an English proficiency exam or civics test.

Math Media

MathMedia (http://www.mathmedia.com/exforadst.html) math software programs are written for students of all ages. Adult math students preparing for the GED test or the TABE use of the software.

MCH Interactive: GED

MHC Interactive: GED (http://www.epgtech.com/faqs/Contemp/ged_interac_CD.htm) is a multimedia test-preparation and skills-development program to prepare students for success on GED tests. It allows students to work at their own pace and focus on subjects and skills most important to them. Upon completing the lessons and tests, students should be able to reasonably predict how they will score in the test’s five subject areas: writing and reading (language arts), social studies, science, and mathematics.

Test Pilot

While not specifically for the GED, Test Pilot (http://www.clearlearning.com/), an online accessment and survey engine, can issue sample tests for study and practice. If a company that produces GED questions and software were to put their questions into Test Pilot, the would immediately have a platform independent and scalable solution.

Also, the Minnesota Literacy Council (http://www.themlc.org/sites/9290fbae-86dc-4ed1-9fc8-7bfabe4766ba/uploads...) offers a list of software and demo programs for their computer lab.
