Mac OS X software updates for Aug. 23

Here are the latest updates for Mac OS X apps:

Acclivity NYC (www.acclivitysoftware.com) has rolled out Checkout 3.5, an update including over 200 enhancements and fixes to their Mac retail point-of-sale app. Among the improvements are speed boosts and automatic printing enhancements.

Zevrix Solutions (http://www.zevrix.com) has announced PDF Checkpoint 1.4.1, a compatibility update to its PDF preflight and conversion solution. The new version is compatible with Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.

Zevrix has also released Output Factory 1.3.6, a feature update to its professional output automation solution for Adobe InDesign on Mac OS X. The new version lets users automate export of InDesign documents to HTML.

ExactCODE GMBH (www.OCRkit.com) has updated OCRkit, an OCR solution for the Mac. The update features a new content aware page de-skew option, as well as improved PDF compression and performance. It also features improved multi-core performance and stability.

Eternal Storms Software (www.eternalstorms.com) has announced updates for all their Mac apps, including flickery, ScreenFloat and Yoink, making them compatible with Mountain Lion. flickery is a flickr desktop client for OS X. You can use ScreenFloat to keep information always visible, no matter which application you're in. Yoink shows a small window at the edge of the screen when a drag occurs, providing a place to drop files and app content to it.

FontGear (www.FontGear.net) has revved FontDoctor -- a software tool for font problem diagnosis, repair, and organization -- to version 8.2. The new version is Mountain Lion compatible and has a tweaked interface.

Microsoft says (http://macte.ch/zVyYk) its preview version of Office Web Apps and Office 365 -- online versions of Microsoft's office programs -- has added touch support on the iOS version of Safari and Windows 8 in order to make the programs easier to use on tablet devices.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown – Commander’s Log: H...
Part of the series 148Apps Goes Deep on XCOM: Enemy Unknown I’m still haunted by visions of a parallel world (classified as Xbox 360) as it wasn’t long ago that I was in charge of the XCOM project and led a squadron of soldiers against an alien army. Soldiers I grew attached too, including the first Colonel who helped lead us to many victories. | Read more »

Favorite Four: Soccer Games
As a soccer fan, I’m getting twitchy. The Confederations Cup might be helping a little, but I miss the English Premier League week in, week out. This is where I sink time into FIFA 13 on my console in order to counteract the problem. What about while on the move, though? Here’s a look at my favorite 4 soccer games, each offering a slightly... | Read more »

148Apps Goes Deep on XCOM: Enemy Unknown
XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be released tonight for iPad and iPhone. And we’re very excited. While XCOM isn’t the first console game to be ported over to iOS, it is one of the most ambitious. XCOM: Enemy Unknown while first released for XBox 360 and PS/3 in 2012, this turn-based strategy game has transitioned to touch controls better than any others... | Read more »

XCOM: Enemy Unknown – Cheats, Tips, and...
The X-Com series, particularly the earlier games, are notoriously unforgiving. Although while XCOM: Enemy Unknown has been modernized, and is therefore more player friendly, it’s no slouch either. In fact, even on the Normal difficulty there’s a good chance you’re going to get creamed if you try to breeze through it. But all is not lost. If you... | Read more »
