Samsung seeks iPhone 4S ban in France, Italy
Apple debuted the iPhone 4S. Now Samsung is seeking to bank it in France and Italy for ... you guessed it ... patent infringement. Samsung will file motions with courts in Paris and Milan seeking the ban, each citing two patent infringements on wireless telecommunications technology, the company said in an e-mailed statement today -- as reported by "Bloomberg Businessweek" (http://macte.ch/LI14f). Last month Samsung filed four lawsuits against Apple in the Netherlands. Samsung is claiming the iPhone and iPad that use 3G technology infringe Samsung patents. Meanwhile, Apple in September said in a Hague court hearing that Samsung is holding them "hostage" by asking for 2.4% on each 3G chip used in the iPad and iPhone. Samsung is deliberately misusing both the royalty rate and the responsibility for its payment to try and oppose its lawsuit, says Apple. -- Dennis Sellers

Soundboard for Mac OS X revved to version 2.10
Ambrosia Software has updated Soundboard (http://www.ambrosiasw.com/dl/soundboard) for Mac OS X to version 2.1.0. The update adds support for iPad remote control via the Soundboard Remote, compatibility with the iPad version of Soundboard for exchanging soundboards and compatibility fixes for Mac OS X 10.7 ("Lion"). Soundboard’s 32 triggers can be used to build custom mashups from your onboard audio. You can create intros and fades, crop at will, and apply filters to your audio without fear of losing your original file. You can control Soundboard via any MIDI device, and MIDI effects such as panning and gain are automatically applied to Soundboard's output. You can have your sound play in its entirety with a tap, or have it run only while holding down your chosen MIDI trigger. With Soundboard, it’s your...

Pundit predicts Apple will keep iPhone 3GS in its line-up
In a note to clients -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) analyst Mike Abramsky with RBC Capital Markets says he expects Apple to introduce a refreshed iPhone this week, likely to be branded either the "iPhone 5" or "iPhone 4S." However, he doesn't think Apple will introduce a second, cheaper iPhone model, as some are predicting. Instead Abramsky thinks Apple will reduce the prices of its existing lineup. The analyst predicts the iPhone 4 will drop in price to US$99 subsidized, and $499 without a service contract. Abramsky also thinks Apple will retain the iPhone 3GS in its lineup, offering it for free with a two-year carrier agreement, or $399 contract-free.

In a recent note to investors as reported by "AllThingsD," Janney Capital Markets analyst Bill Choi predicts hat Apple will ship 84 million smartphone units in 2011 and as many as 107 million units next year. The analyst notes that the iPhone is currently shipping to 105 countries and 228 carrier networks. However, because Apple has yet to ink key deals with other major carriers, including Sprint and T-Mobile in the U.S., as well as China Mobile, there is still a major opportunity for growth, he says. Amazon selling Kindle Fire at marginal profit to build market...
An IHS (http://www.isuppli.com) analysis reveals Amazon’s business model for its new Kindle Fire tablet, with the company willing to settle for a razor-thin margin on sales of devices and digital content in order to achieve the larger goal of promoting merchandize sales at its online store. A preliminary virtual estimate conducted by the IHS iSuppli Teardown Analysis Service places Kindle Fire’s bill of materials (BOM) cost at US$191.65. With the addition of manufacturing expenses, the total cost to produce the Kindle Fire rises to $209.63. When further costs outside of materials and manufacturing are added in -- and the $199 price of the tablet is factored along with the expected sales of digital content per device -- Amazon is likely to generate a marginal profit of $10 on each Kindle Fire sold, says the research group. However, the real benefit of the Kindle Fire to Amazon will not be in selling hardware or digital content, according to IHS. Rather, the Kindle Fire, and the...
