Apple began discussing a cloud service with the studios over a year ago, the article adds. Earlier this year it was reported Apple had acquired the icloud.com domain name from the Swedish firm Xcerion. Most reports and speculation have iCloud dealing more with music than video. Apple has reportedly signed deals with most, if not all, music publishers. The "Wall Street Journal" (http://macte.ch/mmhlr) expects iCloud to be a "scan and match"...

Forrester’s IT Forum: App Internet, not cloud, future of The...
The app Internet will dramatically alter the Web as users know it, force today’s leading technology vendors to adapt to a new business environment, and affect every job function in the business technology (BT) organization, Forrester Research CEO and Chairman of the Board George F. Colony told more than 1,300 business technology professionals attending last week's Forrester’s IT Forum (http://macte.ch/RscHK), Forrester’s largest IT event of the year. Despite industry’s preoccupation with cloud computing, Colony said that a standalone cloud or web solution is not the web architecture of the future. According to Colony, Apple has established leadership in the app Internet space, and web-centric companies such as Google and Facebook are risky bets in the app Internet market due to their overreliance on web-based technologies. Forrester estimates that the app Internet market was $2.2 billion in 2010 with a compound annual growth rate of 85% through 2015. To succeed in this market, other...

Gibbons says the charges were dismissed in the interest of justice, though the investigation is ongoing. All of the iPad 2 tablet computers allocated by Apple Inc. for the Taiwan market were snapped up by locals on the first day of sale, as expected by market analysts, reports "The China Post" (http://macte.ch/gcN36). Nokia wins partial review of its case against Apple
Nokia has won a partial review of the U.S. International Trade Commission patent case it lost to Apple in March, reports "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/epz5E). Infringement claims against Apple over two of the five patents decided on by an ITC judge will be reviewed by the full six-member commission. The ITC will let stand the rest of the finding that Apple didn’t violate three other Nokia patents, according to a notice by the Washington-based agency, says "Bloomberg." The ITC said it would focus the review on the meaning of specific terms in two patents. Espoo, Finland-based Nokia is seeking to block U.S. imports of the iPhone, one of two cases it lodged against Cupertino, California-based Apple with the ITC. In March 2010, Apple filed a lawsuit against HTC for infringing on 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone's user interface, underlying architecture and hardware. The lawsuit was filed concurrently with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and in U.S. District Court in...

US Uncut to protest at Apple retail stores on June 4
US Uncut, an organization that fights companies that try to avoid taxes, is planning to target Apple retail stores on June 4, protesting the company's support of the Win America Campaign, reports "CNET" (http://macte.ch/CEHo2). The group seeks to have Apple leave the WAC, which it claims is lobbying Congress for what would end up being a $4 billion tax cut for the company, as well as to cease other lobbying activities relating to "tax loopholes," the article adds. "Apple plays huge games with their taxes. By disguising profits in the U.S. as foreign earnings in low-tax countries, Apple dodges billions of dollars of taxes they should be paying," the group said in a statement. The WAC is supported by other technology companies, including Microsoft, Google, and Adobe. The group is currently lobbying for the Freedom to Invest Act of 2011, legislation introduced earlier this month that would temporarily lower taxes on American companies that sell goods and services abroad. That money could...

As part of an ongoing effort to use technology to enhance flight safety, improve efficiency and protect the environment, Alaska Airlines (http://www.alaskaair.com) is issuing iPads to its pilots. The Apple tablets replace up to 25 pounds of paper flight manuals that pilots are required to carry when they fly. The iPads are being distributed to all Alaska Airlines pilots, a process that will be complete by mid-June. This follows a successful trial by 100 line and instructor pilots and Air Line Pilots Association representatives, who evaluated the feasibility of using iPads as electronic flight bags this past winter and spring. Alaska Airlines is the first major domestic airline to use the iPad to replace paper manuals. "We've been exploring the idea of an electronic flight bag for several years, but never found a device we really liked," says Gary Beck, Alaska Airlines' vice president of flight operations. "When the iPad hit the market, we took one look at it and said this is the...

Apple, AT&T, US Cellular sued for patent infringement
Another day, still another lawsuit. Visual Interactive Phone Concepts, a non-practicing entity that holds two videophone mailbox patents and has previously instigated patent infringement suits, filed three lawsuits in the Eastern District of Michigan on Wednesday against Apple, AT&T and US Cellular. In all three complaints, Visual Interactive Phone Concepts claim the companies it's suing violate its patents for "videophone interactive mailbox facility system and method of processing information." However, the alleged infringements differ, which is presumably why the company filed three parallel suits instead of one multi-defendant complaint, reports "FOSS Patents" (http://macte.ch/fZRmg). Apple is accused of infringement because it makes and sells "mobile communication devices that are videophones." AT&T is being sued for providing "a mobile TV and video service in the United States. US Cellular's alleged infringements relate to "a mobile TV and video service."

Apple sues maker of the 'white iPhone conversion kit'
Another day, another lawsuit. According to "MacRumors (http://www.macrumors.com), Apple has sued New York City teenager Fei Lam and his parents for selling US$130,000 worth of white iPhone 4 parts in the months between Apple's promise of a white iPhone and its actual arrival. Lam claimed that he had developed a secondhand relationship with someone at Apple's manufacturing partner Foxconn who had been supplying him with parts, notes "MacRumors." At the time, the report noted that Lam had been contacted by a purported private investigator who claimed that Lam was trafficking in stolen goods, and Lam's site (http://www.whiteiphone4now.com) disappeared soon after. However, Apple also filed a voluntary dismissal of the lawsuit at the same time, suggesting that a settlement has may have been reached, reports "MacRumors." Intel would consider making silicon for rivals
Intel would consider making silicon for rivals, saying that any proposal to use its manufacturing capacity to make chips based on a non-Intel processor core would trigger an "in-depth discussion," according to Reuters (http://macte.ch/LXUUO). "There are certain customers that would be interesting to us and certain customers that wouldn't," Chief Financial Officer Stacy Smith told journalists after an investor event in London on Thursday. "If Apple or Sony came to us and said 'I want to do a product that involves your IA (Intel architecture) core and put some of my IP around it', I wouldn't blink. That would be fantastic business for us. Then you get into the middle ground of 'I don't want it to be a IA core, I want it to be my own custom designed core,' and then you are only getting the manufacturing margin, (and) that would be a much more in-depth discussion and analysis." Smith said, however, that such a proposal was "not in the works today," and the prospect of making chips for...

Senator wants mandatory privacy policy for Apple, Google app...
Senator Al Franken (D-Minn.) has released a letter calling for the institution of mandatory privacy policies from all apps offered via the official software marketplaces of Apple and Google. "Requiring that each app in your stores have a clear, understandable privacy policy would not resolve most of the privacy concerns in the mobile world," he writes. "But it would be a simple first step that would provide users, privacy advocates and federal consumer protection authorities a minimum of information about what information an app will access and how that app will share that information with third parties." Franken adds: "Although I believe there is a greater need for transparency and disclosure for the collection and sharing of all personal information, at a minimum, I ask that you require all location-aware applications in your app stores to provide privacy policies that clearly specify what kind of location information is gathered from users, how that information is used, and how...
