Amazon debuts Kindle ebook reader

The Kindle requires no computer, cable or syncing. It measures 7.5 by 5.3 by 0.7 inches and weighs 10.3 ounces. Wireless connectivity enables you to shop the Kindle Store directly from the device. Buy a book and it's auto-delivered wirelessly in less than one minute.

More than 88,000 books are available, including 100 of 112 current New York Times best sellers. The best sellers and all new releases are US$9.99 (unless marked otherwise). You can download and read first chapters for free before you decide to buy.

Many U.S. newspapers -- including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post and magazines -- including TIME, Atlantic Monthly, Forbes, Le Monde, Frankfurter Allgemeine and The Irish Times are also available. The Kindle holds over 200 titles and fully recharges in two hours (no info was available on how long it would work on a charge.

Unlike WiFi, Kindle utilizes the same high-speed data network (EVDO) as advanced cell phones. There are no monthly wireless bills, service plans, or commitments. Also, the Kindle includes free wireless access to Wikipedia.org.
