Apple leaps to third place in smartphone market

"Worldwide smartphone sales to end-users totaled 36.5 million units in the third quarter of 2008, an 11.5 percent increase from the same period in 2007," says Gartner. "... Sales of Apple iPhones grew by 327.5 percent, as it took third place with a market share of 12.9 percent."

Apple's shipments into the channel during the third quarter of 2008 approached seven million units. However, Apple built up around two million units of inventory and Gartner's sales unit estimate reflects this.
