Kanex debuts Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter with USB digital audio

With this new adapter, the newer MacBooks with mini DisplayPorts can now be connected to an HD source and have digital audio be outputted through the adapter. There was a mixture of opinions for the first Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter without audio. Some liked it since they didn't require the audio with their application. Other MacBook users criticized the original adapter for the inconvenience of not having the option to have audio output.

Some customers complained about the pain of having to use multiple cables along with the adapter, such as a 3.5mm to RCA cable, in order to output audio from their MacBooks. Other customers also had problems with certain HDTV models ignoring all other audio outputs when an HDMI is plugged in. As a result, these customers had to route a separate audio system with their HDTV. Due to these problems, the adapters were developed as one adapter solution to display both audio and video.

Since HDMI is able to support both audio and video, users wondered why it wasn't possible to have the option of having audio come out the Mini DisplayPort adapter as well. The new adapters will be able to output digital audio signals through the USB port from the MacBooks. USB audio was integrated into the adapter with HDMI output to allow the audio pass through. Two USB 2.0 ports are also conveniently located next to the Mini DisplayPort, which allows access to plug both cables in

The new adapter still has the same specifications as its predecessor as it still will be version 1.3b and support resolutions of up to 1080p. The adapter also looks similar to the current Mini DisplayPort to HDMI. The main difference for the adapter will be the extra USB cable next to the Mini DisplayPort cable. The new adapter also supports uncompressed audio such as LPCM.

The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters with digital audio are planning to be released in August. Pricing hasn't been announced.

Terra Noctis: Free Dreaming Promises Ple...
When I first played Terra Noctis, I came away with an incredibly positive opinion. Sure it had its share of problems. In fact, it had a ton of small ones. However it was still a cool platformer that was well worth the somewhat hefty (comparably) price of $2.99 at the time. The cost has dropped down to $0.99 since then, but even that might be “too... | Read more »
