Recently, Mark McKean at Apple Discussions had his MacBook stolen and posted this; "I had a MacBook stolen last week, and I need the serial number to report to the police on the odd chance that they find it. I can't seem to find the serial number anywhere in my files. Can I get that info from Apple? If so, how?"
Unfortunately Apple has no place on their website to retrieve that information. You may be able to get the serial number by calling Apple, but you may need some proof of purchase.
If you are reading this and don't know your Mac's serial number, now is a good time to find out and write it down in a secure place. There are a couple of ways to get the number.
1. Select "About This Mac" from your Apple menu. Put your mouse over the OS version number (under Mac OS X pictured below) and click two times. The first click will bring up OS build number and the second click brings up the serial number.
2. Select “About This Mac†from your Apple menu. Click on "More Info" button, as in the picture above. It will open your System Profiler and the serial number will be under "Hardware Overview" in there.
