MacNews Category Review: Networking utilities for the Mac, part 3

imageThis MacNews Category Review offers part three of our three-part round-up of networking utilities for Mac OS X. Products covered include RDC Menu, Router IP Address, SCExplorer, Secure Shell Helper, Serial Parallels, SharePoints, SharkLauncher, SNMP Status, Splunk Server, SpuidMan, SSH Tunnel Manager, Thousand Parsec wxPython Client,, Torrent Station, Tunnelblick, Users & Groups, Visual1553, VuMan, Wake550, Web Key Maker, XGridLite, XNMap, Xtend SAN-Mac iSCSI Initiator, ZiskoCalc and Zoom.

RDC Menu

RDC Menu adds an icon to your menubar, allowing you access to launch the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client.

Router IP Address

Router IP Address is an utility for discovering the dynamic IP address assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) when you have a router connecting several computers to a single internet connection (cable modem, DSL, or telephone modem).

SCExplorer lets you explore System Configuration framework dynamic store.

Secure Shell Helper

Secure Shell Helper is a secure shell client & server configurer.

Serial Parallels

Serial Parallels connects to serial ports as sockets on the host operating system and binds them to a real serial port. To use it, you add a serial port as a server socket on the virtual machine. Start the virtual machine then run SerialParallels. Set its socket type to client and select the file to match that in Parallels. Set the serial device and associated settings then hit the enable button.

SharePoints is an application or a preference pane that lets you add and delete share points like in the old Finder. This program is designed to make it easy to share any folder.

SharkLauncher is a free, open-source application launcher, written in Python, for the Unix-based WireShark (formerly Ethereal) network monitoring program on Mac OS X. WireShark is a graphical user interface for the tcpdump command-line utility, and runs under Fink or MacPorts in Apple's X11 environment. While the program can be launched from within the X11 application, it requires administrator authorization (a user password), and the SharkLauncher tool provides a convenient way to start the program.

SNMP Status

SNMP Status monitors a SNMP device like AirPort routers and displays the traffic of a connected interface in the menubar.

Splunk Server

Splunk Server indexes logs from any source (Apache, Mac OS X, Sendmail, routers). There's no need to configure it for specific formats, writing regular expressions or changing your logging output.

SquidMan is installer and graphical interface for Squid proxy cache.

SSH Tunnel Manager

SSH Tunnel Manager is a tool to manage SSH Tunnels (commonly invoked with -L and -R arguments in the console). It can set up lots of tunnels, each containing many port redirections.

Thousand Parsec wxPython Client

Thousand Parsec wxPython Client is a client for the Thousand Parsec framework. The client allows you to connect to any Thousand Parsec server and play a wide variety of turn based space empire building games, such as the demo games MiniSec and MTSec. Thousand Parsec draws ideas from (and should be able to clone) other 4X games such as Stars!, VGA Planets, Master of Orion and Galactic Civilizations.

offers a technique to conserve network bandwidth by attempting to compress resources transferred thereby increasing connection throughput. We recommend our solution for those who are paying a fee based on traffic consumption; have monthly download limit or using narrowband connection.

Torrent Station

Torrent Station is a BitTorrent client.

Tunnelblick is a graphical user interface for OpenVPN.

Users & Groups

Users & Groups is a tool that manages local users and groups.

Visual1553 is a program to show you the breakout of Mil-Std-1553 command and status words. For the command words it will show you the remote address, the transport mode, the subaddress (or mode if applicable) and the word count (or mode code if applicable). For status words it will show you the remote address and the bit statuses.

Vuman is a Mac OS X graphical user interface to the main system of Unix software documentation, the man page. VuMan provides a friendly interface to the Unix man page system. It links together a number of Unix command-line tools to make searching, reading, and printing man page documentation a simple task.

Wake550 is an open source tool lets you wake a sleeping computer through a LAN by simply typing it’s MAC Address in the appropriate dialog box.

WEP Key Maker

WEP Key Maker generates a hexadecimal key from a pass phrase; key can then be copied from the utility and passed directly to an IEEE 802.11b device.

XGridLite notifies you by email whenever your IP address changes

XNMap provides a Cocoa GUI for nmap, the network scanner.

Xtend SAN-Mac iSCSI Initiator

Xtend SAN-Mac iSCSI InitiatorThe ATTO Xtend SAN iSCSI initiator package for Mac OS X enables block storage access via existing Ethernet networks, using standard network interface cards (NICs). The iSCSI protocol defines the rules and processes for transporting SCSI (block-level) data over a TCP/IP network, iSCSI enables improvements in the cost, operating distance, and manageability of storage networks. Xtend SAN consists of an iSCSI device driver, an initiator service manager, and a management interface.

ZiskoCalc is a small desktop-toolkit that lets you convert values from many number-systems into others like hex, oct, bin, dec.

Zoom is a application to create session bookmarks for ssh and telnet connections. Several per session options can be defined. A Menu Item provides system-wide access to stored sessions. The connections are run in a Terminal window.
