MacNews Category Review: Point-of-sale software for the Mac, part II

ProBe

ProBe from ProBe Software is designed for use with touchcreen Macs. Functions are controlled by touching the button area on the screen. Orders can be printed from up to seven locations in, for example, the kitchen or bar. Receipts are printed to a receipt printer. A cash drawer accepts all payments and menu changes can be made via a separate layout screen. Some types of businesses using ProBe are: plant nurseries, restaurants, furniture stores, hardware stores, fashion outlets, cafeterias, health and sports clubs, sationery and printing services, museums, book stores, surf shops, resorts, baby wares, cosmetic stores, imported good dealers, supermarkets, light fitting establishments, jewelers, universities and computer stores. ProBe is Mac OS X compatible.

School Lunch Mac

School Lunch Mac by Rodlan Administrative Software is a fully automated, point-of-sale lunch accounting system designed to keep schools in compliance with federal regulations that prohibit overt identification of free and reduced qualifying students, while accounting for all lunch monies. Breakfast and lunch can be handled independently. A la carte items can be sold in addition to a standard meal or extra milk. School Lunch Mac will notify the operator when a card has been accessed more than once in the same day. Warning messages will also notify the operator when the student is out of money or within a user-defined limit. The program prints all reports, bar codes, monthly summaries, and accurate claim information. A district accounting disk is available for combining information from schools in the same district for a comprehensive report. Optional bar code scanners are available. School Lunch Mac supposedly runs on any Power Mac system.

Silicon Valley Bus products

Silicon Valley Bus makes a couple of products of interest to Mac users: the BC-Wide Range Bar Code Reader and the Hand-held Portable Data Collector. The former is a is a wide range (up to four inches wide from a distance of up to three inches) bar code system for point-of-sale, invoicing, inventory control, label printing and more. It supports FileMaker Pro applications and sports a SmartCode Control Panel for custom commands, automated data entry and ability to create macros.

The Hand-held Portable Data Collector is built for warehouses and other environments where portability and ruggedness is needed. It's a bar code system for point-of-sale, invoicing, inventory control, label printing and more. It also supports FileMaker Pro applications and has a SmartCode Control Panel. There are two models of the Hand-held Portable Data Collector: one with CCD scanner, the other with a laser scanner.

STX

STX by Salon Transcripts is an integrated package for managing a salon and spa. Mac OS X compatible, it's designed to handle everything from appointments to point-of-sale operations, payroll to client history.
