The iConnect is an iPhone or iPod ready keyboard with a built-in dock that allows you to sync and charge your Apple device automatically from the peripheral. It comes with three inserts to fit everything from the first generation iPod nano to the iPhone. This offers an obvious benefit in desktop real estate, since you have a keyboard/cradle all in one device. However, you should note that the iConnect device has to have its own power supply to serve as an iPod/iPhone dock, which means yet another device to plug into an electrical outlet.
There are different two versions of the keyboard: one for the Mac and one for Windows. Both contain two USB ports, but the Mac model has extra keys that lets you launch apps such as iCal, iChat, Mail, Safari and Front Row. Plus, there are six Internet keys for online navigation. Additionally, the device has a rubberized wrist rest. And its two-port UBS hub rotates, a feature that makes it very convenient and flexible to use.
The iConnect is a good idea, but falls a bit short in execution. The keys are a bit stiffer than I like. The volume control is a bit funky. On the usual Mac keyboard you hold down the volume key to adjust the volume. On the LifeWorks device, which is touch activated, you have to run your finger over the control, which takes some getting used to. And, occasionally, my Apple wireless mouse wouldn't allow me to double click on any items unless I unplugged the iConnect from my Mac's USB port, then reconnected it.
The LifeWorks solution isn't perfect. But if desk space is at a premium, you might want to give this keyboard/cradle combo a look.
The iConnect requires Mac OS X 10.5 ("Leopard") or higher. It costs US$99, though you can also get an $149.99 bundle that comes with a wireless mouse.
Macsimum rating: 7 out of 10.
