Macsimum review: SyncMate lets Macs, Windows Mobile devices, more live in unison

It lets you synchronize Favorites, Contacts, Calendar, Notes in such devices (and others, but more on that in a moment) with Bookmarks, Address Book, iCal, Stickies on Mac OS X. The software enables Internet sharing between the Mac and the mobile device.

The latest version of the software is 2.5, which adds the convenient ability to sync your Mac with Windows Mobile devices via Bluetooth. USB and Wi-Fi connections are also supported. The new version also adds an autosync option and real-time synchronization.

With SyncMate, Mac users can synchronize their Macs with Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) and USB flash drives, as well as with other supported devices (Windows Mobile devices, Nokia phones, other Macs, online storage and Google account). I tested it with an AutoDesk flash drive, a NokiaS40 phone and an Asus P750. It worked smoothly on these; but I can't testify for the other devices.

Installation is a breeze. Download the app (or order the CD version), install it, enter the registration number and you're good to go. When start using SyncMate please make sure that "Advanced network functionality" is chosen on your Windows Mobile device. In Firewall setting, select "Allow All."

Also, in order to sync your Mac with Windows PC you need to download and install SyncMate module for Windows on your PC. You can download it here: http://mac.eltima.com/download/syncmate.exe .

During the syncing process, you can choose which files to sync. An on-screen window shows you how the sync is going. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are the most convenient syncing options, but USB is a bit faster.

The great thing is that you can use SyncMate to sync several devices at once. Yes, you can sync your iCal calendars, Google calendars, contacts, etc., to numerous devices at a time.
And you have access to the synced devices from the main toolbar in Mac OS X.

SyncMate is available in two editions. SyncMate Free Edition is a synchronizer for Mac and Pocket PC/smartphone devices that will help you keep all your documents, text messages, contacts, calendar entries and events and other stuff organized. With SyncMate Free edition you can synchronize applications like Address Book, iCal, etc. Also you can easily read SMS directly from your Mac, check detailed device information (battery state, etc.) and visually analyze memory usage.

SyncMate Expert Edition (available for US$39.95) grants you even more synchronization possibilities. With Expert Edition you can synchronize time and share the Internet between your Mac and your mobile device. You can synchronize iTunes and iPhoto. Also, the Expert Edition allows you to synchronize separate folders. Notes, and To Do’s syncing is also availabl.

SyncMate is Universal Binary so runs natively on both PowerPC and Intel Macs. It requires Mac OS X 10.4 or higher.
