The Hard Disks is available in a triple interface version consisting of USB 2.0, eSATA, and Firewire 400 and in capacities of 500GB, 750GB and 1TB. Macsimum News took the 500GB model for a test drive.
With its triple interface, it's very versatile. The Hard Disk is well priced (more below) and is extremely fast. Plus, it's very quiet due to its natural heat dissipation accomplished via a casing with bottom plate holes for natural airflow.
What's more, it's one of the best-looking hard drives around, which is, of course, important to Mac users. The light device is fashioned in a black-mirrored finish and includes a blue LED strip that creates a nice ambient glow.
I do wish the Hard Disk had a lock port. Also, it does tend to get rather toasty. Finally, it doesn't feel as rugged as some external drives and I'm not sure how it would survive many tumbles from a desktop.
Still, it's hard to beat the combination of great looks, great performance and great price.
The device is cross-platform compatible with either a Mac or PC. It works with Mac OS X 10.3 and higher. The Hard Disk is available now and may be purchased through LaCie direct and via LaCie’s specialized dealer network at a suggested retail price starting at US$149.99. The USB-only version is also available at the starting price of $109.99.
Macsimum rating: 9 out of 10.
