Review: Trans' memory upgrades for latest Mac Pro easy to install, work great

Trans International offers the Fully–Buffered Dimms for the Mac Pro (8-core) with specially designed heat spreaders (heat-sink) that conforms to JADEC standards as well as Apple’s stringent thermal, mechanical, electrical design specifications and guidelines. More cooling surface on these heat spreaders allow better heat dissipation, providing efficient cooling for the components. Cooler operation enhances memory performance.

Unlike any other Mac, the Mac Pro uses Fully Buffered DIMMS (or FB-DIMMs), an Intel-developed format the offers high memory performance -- at a price tag higher than other RAM. That's because each FB-DIMM has its own memory controller onboard. This means extra heat, so each FB-DIMM comes with its own heat sink, adding to their cost. And to take full advantage of the 256-bit wide memory architecture, four or more memory modules should be installed.

But you can never have too much RAM, especially if you're a pro user. It's this simple: the more memory you have, the more things you can do -- and do faster.

Pricing for the Trans memory ranges from US$108 for a 2GB kit to $2,558 for a 32GB kit. I test drove the 8GB kit ($648). The prices are competitive with any other company -- and MUCH better than the arm and two legs Apple wants for memory upgrades.

Note that the Intel-based Mac Pro requires memory be installed in the Matched Sets. For the best performance, you'll need to have at least two pairs of FB-DIMMs installed in your system. Installing the RAM is easy, even easier than completing the task on the Power Mac G5, which was itself reasonably simple. Using a "riser system," the Mac Pro has two RAM carrier cards, each with four slots. To install RAM, slide the card out, place it on a hard, flat surface (the card has plastic feet on its back side), and insert your new FB-DIMMs. Then reinsert the card.

There are eight slots in all, four on each card. The slots are spaced wider than usual, thanks to the heat sinks that Apple says are there to "ensure that the fans run at the proper speed to maintain the optimal temperature and ensure acoustic performance." FB-DIMMs with conventionally sized heatsinks will work in the Mac Pro, although Apple recommends Apple-approved heatsinks "for optimum performance and acoustics." And that includes the Trans International memory upgrades.

MacPro Memory Upgrade kits from Trans International range from 2GB to 16GB with prices starting at US$499. For details go here.

Terra Noctis: Free Dreaming Promises Ple...
When I first played Terra Noctis, I came away with an incredibly positive opinion. Sure it had its share of problems. In fact, it had a ton of small ones. However it was still a cool platformer that was well worth the somewhat hefty (comparably) price of $2.99 at the time. The cost has dropped down to $0.99 since then, but even that might be “too... | Read more »
