Three mini reviews of iPad cases

The iPad accessories continue to pour in. Today we'll offer three "mini reviews" of two cases.

Apple's US$40 iPad Case is actually more of a cover than a case. But it has the advantage of offering built-in stand functionality. It can be used in various positions so it’s easy to type, look at photos and slideshows, or watch movies.

The iPad Case is great for using with a Bluetooth keyboard and the Pages app for the iPad. The only thing I didn't like about it was that its unusual design doesn't allow it to "square up" when it's closed, so the right side of the iPad is a bit exposed. On the other hand, with its dual purpose design as a cover and stand, I see no way around this.

Also, to paraphrase Henry Ford on the Model T, it's available in any color you like -- as long as that's black.

Fabrix (http://www.fabrixcases.com) offers the Magic Sleeve for the the iPad. It's a S$32.90, slot-in styled case built to the dimensions of the Apple device. It has one purpose: to protect the iPad when you're moving it around.

Think of the Apple device as a pillow, and the Magic Sleeve as a pillow case. A very padded pillow case.

The Magic Sleeve is constructed of lightweight materials and, despite its protective qualities, adds very little weight to the iPad. Each sleeve is lined with soft cushioned paddings. In addition, the Magic Sleeve features an inner "pillow flap" design that secures the iPad in position while inserted into the sleeve, preventing the Apple device from accidentally falling out.

All of the above is achieved without metal zippers or even velcro strips, making this sleeve "Checkpoint Friendly" at airports. The Fabrix Magic Sleeve is available in different colors and design options.

Rating: 9 out of 10

Griffin Technology (http://www.griffintechnology.com/) makes the Jumper, a $29.99 neoprene sleeve for the iPad. It's fine for transporting your Apple device from place to place, though it's more difficult to insert and remove the iPad than it is with the Fabrix Magic Sleeve.

But the Jumper does protect the device from dust, dirt, scratches and fingerprints, thanks to its soft, stretchy design. It sports integrated pull tab tucks for total coverage.

The Jumper also offers the convenience of being slim enough to slip into a backpack, bag or briefcase. It's a solid, serviceable case. There's just nothing unique about it.
