Toshiba prez: 25 percent of all laptops will have solid state drives by 2011

Currently, the MacBook Air is available with a 64GB solid state drive (SSD), but it costs a whopping 3,000 bucks. But this price-capacity ratio will change if Saito's predictions are on target. He forecasts that the NAND flash memory market will expand 133 percent on average every year from 2006 through 2010.

Toshiba plans to extend its SSD lineup, which currently ranges from 32 to 128GB up to 512 Gbytes in the future, per Tech On. Saito says he's considering the compartmentalization of SSDs for 512GB or less and HDDs for more in the market for memories used in notebook computers.
