Study: tablet shipments to hit 58 million in 2014
Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/6511af/the_worldwide_ere) says standalone e-readers will continue to address the needs of avid readers, to whom the reading experience is central, while tablets such as the iPad "are better suited for consumers who prefer a stronger multimedia experience, and only light reading.” In 2009, standalone e-readers were one of the most popular devices in the consumer electronics world. Today, there is still buzz surrounding the e-reader market. However, the talk is of drastic price erosion, competition from the iPad, and the overall sustainability of standalone e-reader shipment growth. In response to the iPad introduction, e-reader manufacturers dropped price points in an effort to differentiate e-readers from the iPad and other multimedia tablet computers. There's even talk of a sub-$100 e-reader soon. At $100, the e-reader enters "gift" status, a status that can drive a market into the mainstream, says Research and Markets...

UK consumers say 'no way' to paying GBP400 for an iPad
The latest research from Broadband Genie (http://www.broadbandgenie.co.uk) has shown that most UK consumers won't dream of paying GBP400 for a iPad, despite the desirability of the UK's number one new gadget. This will also be bad news for Samsung, whose Galaxy tablet is being released with similar price points in the run up to Christmas. In a poll of more than 1,300 visitors to the broadband, mobile broadband and smartphone comparison site, more than 60% said the iPad was "definitely not" worth GBP400 or more. More than 200 more said it "wasn't really" worth the price tag, putting the total thinking it was a poor value up to 80%. "There's a clear message here from British consumers -- while they like the idea of a tablet, they aren't willing to pay through the nose for one," Broadband Genie editor Chris Marling says. "With ereaders, smartphones, netbooks and even laptops now available for a fraction of that price, it's a tough ask for people to see the value in a tablet costing up to...

AirPrint for iOS being downgraded?
"Last minute stability and compatibility problems" with Apple's AirPrint for iOS devices may have forced the company to delay Mac and Windows support indefinitely, reports "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com). Originally, Apple said that AirPrint automatically finds printers on local networks and can print text, photos and graphics to them wirelessly over Wi-Fi without the need to install drivers or download software. HP’s existing and upcoming ePrint enabled printers were supposed to be the first to support printing direct from iOS devices. "AppleInsider" says release notes from the iOS 4.2 Golden Master, which was released on Nov. 1, state that "iOS 4.2 devices can print wirelessly only to printers that support AirPrint and are running the latest available firmware." Prior references to printing to Mac or Windows have been removed.
