Massive Apple data center to be used for '21st-century...
Apple’s humongous new data center in Raleigh, North Carolina, "is a 21st-century broadcasting system to rival the TV networks of old, says a leading expert in cloud computing," Nick Carr, author of the “ The Big Switch” a bestseller about the cloud, tells "Cult of Mac" (http://www.cultofmac.com/apples-data-center-is-21st-century-broadcasting...). The new Apple data center in Maiden, North Carolina is expected to begin operations “any day now,” according to local officials. Even as Apple begins to ramp up production at the 500,000 square foot data center, there are rumors circulating that Apple may be planning to build a second 500,000 square foot facility on the site, the article adds. The facility -- not counting the rumored expansions -- is expected to employ at least 50 full-time employees. Carr says Apple’s North Carolina facility is a “broadcasting system” not unlike NBC or CBS, but one that distributes software as well as media. The data center can be seen as essentially a...

Some investors want Apple to put its cash, investments 'to...
Apple's US$51 billion in cash and investments is earning a lower return than a typical U.S. savings account, and some investors say CEO Steve Jobs should put that money to better use, reports "Bloomberg Businessweek" (http://news.businessweek.com/article.asp?documentKey=1377-al5MGXgYUUN0-5...). Apple got a 0.75% return on the investments in the past fiscal year, according to a regulatory filing last week. The gain pales next to the roughly 10% investors would have earned from the Standard & Poor's 500 Index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average over that time, says "Bloomberg Businessweek." Apple's stock itself also was a much better investment, rising 60%. In a conference call with the press and financial analysts in October, Jobs said that the company has a good track record of using cash, saying it's holding money for one or more “strategic opportunities,” rather than a dividend or stock buyback. For some shareholders, the cash hoard is overkill, especially considering Apple...

Study: increased tablet demand hurting netbook sales
The debate continues over the impact tablets are having on both the consumer computer market and netbook demand. But what is particularly unclear is which companies are going to emerge as the biggest winners and losers?
To find out the ChangeWave research group (http://www.changewave.com) surveyed 3,108 consumers during October on the latest planned buying trends for computers, netbooks and tablets -- including the impact of the iPad. The percentage of respondents saying they plan on buying a desktop over the next 90 days (6%) has ticked up one point since ChangeWave's previous survey in August, while planned purchases of laptops (8%) remain unchanged. But one area that’s come down drastically from a year ago is consumer interest in netbooks. Just 14% of those who plan on buying a laptop in the next 90 days say it will be a netbook. That's 10 points below ChangeWave's peak reading for netbooks back in June 2009. The research group says the decline of netbooks is attributable to a...

Some Monster headphones causing problems when used with iOS...
Apple is tracking an issue with defective Monster headphones in conjunction with the iPhone, iPad and iPod, reports "engadget" (http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/01/apple-tracking-an-issue-with-defectiv...). Purportedly, users may experience erratic behavior of their iOS device when using Monster headphones that use Apple's Remote and Mic technology. Symptoms are said to include pausing, playing and skipping forward or back through songs. Apple is apparently blaming the "conductive flanges" used in many of Monster's earbuds, says "endgadget." The article says the problem seems to be limited to Monster headphones that include "ControlTalk" tech for controlling playback with a cable-mounted mic/volume/pause remote, modeled after Apple's own iPhone-bundled earbuds.

Next iPhone may include NFC technology
Citing an anonymous source, "Cult of Mac" (http://www.cultofmac.com/iphone-5-will-enable-ambitious-remote-computing...) says that Apple is working on Near Field Communication (NFC) technology for both its smartphone and future Macs. The functionality is rumored to appear in Apple's next iPhone -- which "Cult of Mac" calls, quite sensibly, the iPhone 5 -- expected to launch in June 2011. NFC is a short-range wireless connection technology that would turn the iPhone into an electronic wallet or security passkey, the article says. NFC is already in use in Asia and is expected to explode here in the next three to five years, especially if Apple adopts the technology. NFC has been rumored for the iPhone 5, "and Apple appears to be gearing up for a NFC revolution," says "Cult of Mac." It has made a lot of NFC hires, including a a leading NFC expert and has patented a lot of NFC technology. the article adds.

Innovate Media, an online ad agency, filed a trademark suit against Apple in April, saying it has used the term "iAd" since 2006 and was granted two trademarks for the term in October 2008. "CNET" says that on Thursday, Consor, a company that helps evaluate intellectual property, posted a release to the Web titled "Consor Intellectual Asset Management Secures Success for Four Clients." However, Consor is now backpedaling from that release, says "CNET." Not long after posting the note to the web, Consor tried to take it down. Doug Bania, who...

Apple takes lead in US smart phone market
In the third quarter of 2010 (Q3 2010), the worldwide smart phone market grew 95% over the same quarter a year ago to 80.9 million shipped units, according to new data from the Canalys research group (http://www.canalys.com). In the world’s largest smart phone market, the US, Apple ousted RIM from the top spot, seizing a 26% share as iPhone shipments continued unabated. RIM has also launched its latest generation smart phone, the Torch, though it only saw half a quarter’s shipments in the US. The included solar power app (available for download beginning Nov. 15) features a lux meter to help you get the necessary light, lets you get at-a-glance information about battery levels, and even alerts you when you need more power.   Logitech’s first solar keyboard can be powered by indoor light and stays charged for at least three months in total darkness, according to Denis Pavillard, vice president of product marketing for Logitech’s keyboards and desktops. It's 1/3-inch thick and sports rounded edges and a thin profile. The keyboard features Logitech Incurve keys. Using a concave design, Incurve keys support the...

Akvis Magnifier 4.0 introduces new image reducing algorithm
Akvis Software has released Akvis Magnifier 4.0 (http://Akvis.com/en/magnifier/index.php), an update of the tool for increasing image resolution for Mac OS X and Windows. Version 4.0 4.0 introduces an advanced algorithm for reducing images. The new Sharpness parameter improves the clarity of images by increasing the color contrast of neighboring pixels. Now images can be reduced and placed in your online photo album without a loss in detail and with an improvement in quality. Also in Akvis Magnifier 4.0, the parameters for processing images are divided into two groups: those which reduce an image (a new parameter to control image clarity), and those which increase an image (all other parameters). Featuring photo resizing algorithms, Akvis Magnifier enlarges digital pictures to "super-high resolution" for enlargements and poster-size prints. Version 2.0 also adds support of image editing in Lab mode and a Print dialog to the standalone edition that makes it possible to print large...

Tuples is native PostgreSQL Client for the Mac
Lost Bytes has released a new version of Tuples (http://www.tuplesapp.com), a PostgreSQL native client for the Mac. The new release includes previously requested changes to the user interface along with bug fixes such as adding space to the Connection List, allowing each connection to take up as much space as necessary. The Editor received a new component, the information box that sits beneath the database structure and displays information about the currently selected table or column. Tuples is a PostgreSQL client designed exclusively for the Mac. It was developed using Cocoa and Objective-C as opposed to non-native clients. The Connection List allows the user to manage database connections and lists previously configured connections. It allows for the creation and edition of connections and double clicking on an existing connection will open an Editor window to the server defined by that connection. The Editor is where the user will spend most of the time working. Its composed of...

Apple countersues Motorola for patent infringement
Another day, another lawsuit. Apple has sued Motorola, alleging that the company's smartphone lineup and the operating software it uses infringe on the iPhone-maker's intellectual property, reports the "Wall Street Journal" (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405274870341450457558476171457361...). The two lawsuits came after Motorola sued Apple in October for patent infringement. Motorola claims that Apple's iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and certain Mac computers infringe Motorola patents. Overall, Motorola Mobility's three complaints include 18 patents, which the company says relates to early-stage innovations developed by Motorola in technology areas found on many of Apple's core products and associated services, including MobileMe and the Apple App Store. The Motorola patents include wireless communication technologies, such as WCDMA (3G), GPRS, 802.11 and antenna design, and key smartphone technologies including wireless email, proximity sensing, software application management,...

Ingram pitching the iPad to businesses
Technology distributor Ingram Micro is seeing increasing interest in the iPad tablet as a business tool, opening up a larger potential market for the device, reports "Reuters" (http://www.reuters.com/article/idCNN2826968820101028?rpc=44). Greg Spierkel, chief executive of Ingram Micro, said Apple has preferred to sell the iPad to retailers but that the company is increasingly letting his firm sell it to businesses. One significant use of tablets by businesses is by sales representatives in the field, he said. Apple reported this month that it sold 4.19 million iPads in the quarter just ended, which was lower than expected due to supply and production bottlenecks. Spierkel said that in the business environment, Ingram Micro customers are continuing to refresh personal computers and related systems, leading to double digit growth there, according to "Reuters."

Apple joins top five global mobile phone vendors
The worldwide mobile phone market grew 14.6% in the third quarter of 2010 (3Q10), the fourth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth, driven in part by the fast-growing converged mobile device category. And Apple entered the top five vendors in the global market. According to the International Data Corporation (http://www.idc.com) research group, vendors shipped 340.5 million units in 3Q10 compared to 297.1 million units in the third quarter of 2009. The growing popularity of converged mobile devices, or smartphones, with consumers and businesspersons is evidenced by the appearance of a second smartphone-only vendor in the top five ranking, says the research group. Apple moved into the number 4 position worldwide in 3Q10, joining Research In Motion (RIM) as one of the world's largest mobile phone suppliers. RIM has spent three quarters on IDC's leaderboard. Apple and RIM also posted the highest-growth rates among the top five vendors last quarter. "The entrance of Apple to the top...
