Apple has highest growth of laptop makers

The TrendForce research group (www.trendforce.com) says laptop shipments totaled 175.5 million in 2014, representing a year-on-year growth of 3.6%. HP was the top vendor, but Apple saw the most growth.

Apple had the biggest gain in 2014 owing to its price-lowering strategy that made its takeover of the midrange and premium market complete. Apple posted a spectacular year-on-year growth of 46.4% and increased its market share to 9.3%. It shot past Toshiba to become number six worldwide and closing in on Acer in terms of shipments. 

HP experienced an improvement in its first quarter notebook shipments, and in the subsequent quarters it posted positive growth, according to TrendForce. Overall, the company increased its shipments by 19.5% compared with 2013 and put itself in the first place with 20.1% of the market share.

Apple tied with Samsung as world's largest smartphone vendor

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics (www.strategyanalytics.com), global smartphone shipments grew 31% annually to reach a record 380 million units in the fourth quarter of 2014 [Q4 2014].

Global smartphone shipments grew 31% annually from 290.2 million units in Q4 2013 to a record 380.1 million in Q4 2014. An impressive 1.3 billion smartphones were shipped worldwide in 2014, with very strong growth seen last year in emerging markets such as China, India and Africa, says ABI Research.

AKVIS Draw for Mac OS X revved to version 2.0

AKVIS (www.akvis.com) has unveiled AKVIS Draw 2.0, the latest version of its standalone application and Photoshop plugin for Mac OS X (10.6 and higher) and Windows.

The software creates hand drawn pencil sketches and line art pictures from photos. The program makes both B&W and color drawings. The new version adds the presets quick preview and other features.

Econ Technologies has released ChronoSync to version 4.5.5, an update of the automated synchronization and backup application for Mac OS X that can synchronize, backup, and create bootable backups.

Tension Software announces AutoMailer 2.2 for Mac OS X

Tension Software has announced AutoMailer 2.2, an update of its Mac OS X app that allows you to send personalized emails to multiple addresses, in text or web format, each merged with data from an internal database. It's been optimized for Mac OS X Yosemite.

AutoMailer lets you prepare and  send an unlimited quantity of emails with a single click. Each email can have custom content depending on whom the recipient is. People receiving the emails won't notice any difference compared to standard emails and they will be able to reply to them as usual, according to the folks at Tension Software.

Apple reports record first quarter results

Apple has announced financial results for its fiscal 2015 first quarter that ended Dec. 27, 2014. The company posted record quarterly revenue of $74.6 billion and record quarterly net profit of $18 billion, or $3.06 per diluted share.

These results compare to revenue of $57.6 billion and net profit of $13.1 billion, or $2.07 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 39.9% compared to 37.9% in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 65 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

The results were fueled by all-time record revenue from iPhone and Mac® sales as well as record performance of the App Store. iPhone unit sales of 74.5 million also set a new record.

Apple has released Mac OS X 10.10.2 and iOS 8.1.3. Mac OS X 10.10.2 is a free download at the Mac App Store. According to Apple, the upgrade:

° Resolves an issue that may cause Wi-Fi to disconnect;

New visual planning software launched for the Mac

Oryx Digital has introduced Hyper Plan 1.0.1, its new planning solution for Mac OS X and Windows. It allows anyone to create cards with user-defined properties, such as status, priority, assigned to and budget.

Western Union adds support for Apple Pay

Western Union (www.westernunion.com), which specializes in global payment services, has announced it will offer Apple Pay, Apple's mobile payment solution, at Western Union’s flagship locations, to provide consumers yet another way to fund global money transfers and bill payments in the United States.

Consumers making Western Union transactions at kiosks in over 7,600 Walgreens and Duane Reade locations nationwide also have the ability to utilize the Apple Pay service. Lemke Software has announced CADintosh 8.1, an update to its 2D CAD program for Mac OS X (10.6.8 or higher).

MasterCard and PGA Tour announce Apple Pay support

MasterCard, the official card of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and the PGA Tour are bringing the latest payment technology to the spectator experience with the introduction of contactless acceptance, including Apple Pay support.

Food and beverage concessions at the 2015 Waste Management Phoenix Open near the16th hole at TPC Scottsdale will be contactless enabled through a partnership with Prom Management Group, which provides catering to 38 professional golf tour events, allowing golf fans to make payments using Apple Pay. Apple rides iPhone 6 and 6 Plus to strong quarter

Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (www.cirpllc.com) has released analysis of the results of its research on mobile phone manufacturers for the calendar quarter that ended Dec. 31. CIRP finds that among the major phone brands, Apple had the largest share of the U.S. market, with half of all phone sales.

"The strength of the September 2014 launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus fueled Apple’s dominance in US mobile phone sales this quarter," says Josh Lowitz, partner and co-founder of CIRP. "Apple had virtually double the sales of Samsung, and five times that of LG. No other brand accounted for as much as 5% of US sales. The Amazon Fire and Blackberry smartphones registered slight share, which we attribute to random sample fluctuation as much as actual sales."
