Apple only gets $119.6 million of the $2.2 billion in sought in...

A jury has awarded Apple damages of US$119.65 million for Samsung’s infringement of several of its smartphone patents, reports the IDG News Service (http://tinyurl.com/qdb7cl8).

Apple had wanted $2.2 billion in damages for what it alleged was infringement of five of its patents by nine models of Samsung smartphones and a single model of a tablet computer. The jury decided that Samsung infringed two patents (though one had been ruled to infringe earlier) and returned a mixed verdict on another patent.

Samsung was also awarded $158,400 in damages from Apple for violating one patent. The company had wanted just over $6 million.

Jury in latest Apple-Samsung trial begin deliberations

A California jury will enter another day of deliberations today in an effort to reach a verdict in the ongoing legal battle between Apple and Samsung, reports the Associated Press (http://tinyurl.com/nfbkazy).

The four men and four women left the federal courthouse in San Jose on Thursday after a full day of deliberations, the article adds. They began deliberations after a month-long trial.

This is all part of the ongoing, global legal battle. Apple and Samsung have filed more than 30 lawsuits against each other across four continents. For example, Apple alleges that Samsung copied the slide-to-unlock technology of its iPhone and iPad devices.

CEA forms Health and Fitness Technology Division

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) has launched Health and Fitness Technology Division in response to the growing role consumer electronics devices are playing in improving health and fitness. The division, originating as the Health and Fitness Technology Working Group in 2010, has made several valuable contributions to the industry during the past four years, says Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CEA.

MakeMusic releases new version of Finale PrintMusic

WiSeKey releases personal cloud for Mac, Windows, iOS, Android...

A new personal cloud service provided by WiSeKey, in cooperation with Swisscom, is now available for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android users. It lets you encrypt and store personal data on private clouds in Switzerland.

You can register at http://wiseid.com/ and download the software that lets you use the service. You can try the service for 30 days free.

WiSeKey says it's the first e-security company in the world to offer decentralized Trust Models and PKI architecture, allowing data ecosystems to be federated via digital identity that makes users interact while maintaining control of their personal data.

The WiSeKey cloud syncs data between devices. The data that you save always stays under users control, is encrypted with strong keys derived from a password that users choose and only the users know, and is never communicated to third parties, according to WiSeKey.

Econ updates ChronoAgent for Mac, released a public beta of...

Econ Technologies (econtechnologies.com) has updated ChronoAgent for Mac to version 1.4.6 and released ChronoSync 4.5 public beta. The ChronoAgent update includes several fixes and support for the upcoming release of ChronoSync 4.5.

ChronoSync is an application that runs on a Mac that can synchronize, backup, and create bootable backups. ChronoAgent is a utility that runs on a destination Mac and communicates directly with ChronoSync running on another Mac. 

ChronoAgent replaces Apple File Sharing providing a direct connection with full access to the destination Mac. ChronoSync costs US$40 and ChronoAgent is $10; all existing ChronoSync and ChronoAgent users update for free.

Macphun rolls out Lost Photos for Mac OS X

Macphun has released Lost Photos for Mac OS X. It's a free app that lets you rediscover all the photos you've sent or received through email. It's available at the Mac App Store.

You can then share them via Facebook, Twitter or email. To set up Lost Photos, you just enter your email address and password. You can log-in to your email accounts using the same encryption using the same encryption as Gmail and other providers.

ATTO Technology is shipping its 12Gb ExpressSAS SAS/SATA Host Bus Adapter (HBA).

ComputerSupport.com says cloud computing on the rise

A new infographic released by ComputerSupport.com shows that cloud adoption rates are on the rise, echoing predictions throughout the technology and business sectors over the past couple of years.

The infographic demonstrates that not only is the presence of cloud hosting increasing, but many people are enthusiastic enough about the cloud to recommend it to their peers. The infographic is based on a Microsoft study, which gauged cloud adoption rates among a wide range of organizations, found that the vast majority of organizations of all sizes use both Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and hosted infrastructure services. Both SaaS and hosted infrastructure services are currently being used most by organizations with less than 100 employees.

Tension Software announces Product Manager 2.0.1

Tension Software (www.tensionsoftware.com) has announced Product Manager 2.0.1, an update of the Mac OS X app for managing products.


It's document-based and can manage an unlimited number of docs, each with an unlimited number of products, subdivided into families. Version 2.0.1 is a maintenance upgrade with some bug fixes.

WaterField introduces 13-inch MacBook Air case

WaterField Designs (http://www.sfbags.com) has unveiled the Outback Solo for the new 13-inch MacBook Air. The waxed canvas and premium leather case costs US$109 and will ship May 16.

The Outback Solo cradles the MacBook Air with two layers of protection: neoprene enveloped in water-resistant, tan-waxed canvas. The offset, brown leather flap secures contents with a magnetic enclosure.

Nearly two-thirds of U.S. broadband households have at least one...

A 1Q 2014 consumer survey by Parks Associates (www.parksassociates.com) finds 64% of U.S. broadband households have at least one consumer electronics device connected to the Internet, which could include a smart TV, Blu-ray player, game console, set-top box, a digital media receiver, or Google Chromecast.

"The percentage of U.S. broadband households with multiple connected CE devices in use continues to increase, with game consoles still leading the way," says Barbara Kraus, director of Research, Parks Associates. "Nearly 50% of U.S. broadband households connect a game console to the Internet to access online content and applications, while 24% have a connected smart TV."

The research shows 21% of U.S. broadband households use a Blu-ray player to connect to the Internet, 16% connect via a streaming media player, and 5% use Google's Chromecast device.
