Light Peak equipped Macs possible for 2011

The rumor mill says that the first computers using LightPeak will arrive in the first half of 2011. And Apple might be one of the first manufacturers to include it in its Mac models, says "CNET" (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-20021658-64.html).

Developed by Intel, the Light Peak technology paves the way for a new generation of extreme computer input and output (I/O) performance, delivering 10Gb/s of bandwidth, with the potential ability to scale to 100Gb/second over the next decade, according to David Perlmutter, executive vice president and general manager, Intel Architecture Group. At 10Gb/second, a user could purportedly transfer a full-length Blu-Ray movie in less than 30 seconds. Intel says it intends to work with the industry to determine the best way to make this new technology a standard.

The optical technology allows for smaller...

IDC: iPhone now number two smartphone globally

The worldwide smartphone market reached a new milestone during the third quarter of 2010 (3Q10), with the leading vendors posting double- or even triple-digit year-over-year growth. According to the International Data Corporation (http://www.idc.com) "Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker,"vendors shipped a total of 81.1 million units, up 89.5% from the 42.8 million units shipped during 3Q09.

Apple marked a new milestone in iPhone shipments, enough to take the number 2 ranking worldwide. The third quarter is typically Apple's highest volume quarter, and 3Q10 was no exception. Consumers who did not get their iPhone 4 at the end of June were rewarded for their patience and even the much-hyped "Antennagate" did little to dampen demand, as the company moved swiftly to provide solutions, says IDC.

For the first three quarters of 2010, vendors have shipped a total of 200.6 million units, up 67.6% from the 119.6...
