Freeridecoding has updated SmartBackup (http://freeridecoding.com/smartbackup), a Mac OS X app for lightweight backups, to version 3.0. The upgrade sports a revamped interface, a new mode to support folder syncing and improved performance.

SmartBackup performs backups to hard drives, network sharepoints, webDAV, USB sticks and iPods. It supports configuration via Spotlight "saved searches," archiving of deleted or changed items, file exclusion, handling of multiple backup sets, one-click restore and automation using iCal, Automator or shellscripts.

SmartBackup costs US$25 for a single-user license; site licenses are also available. Version 3.0 is a free update for all users that have purchased a license since Jan. 1, 2009, or an upgrade to version 2.5. For all other users upgrade licenses are available starting at $10.

According to IDC, the traditional camcorder market is shifting to HD, as nearly 45 percent of all units shipped in 2009 were HD models and is expected to hit 60% in 2010. Apple's unveiling of iPhone OS 4.0 later this week will likely include full multitasking support, the new "iAd" mobile advertising service, and gaming related announcements, Kaufman Brothers analyst Shaw told clients in a note today.

He said checks with his sources indicate that iPhone OS 4.0 will be a full multi-tasking environment where third-party applications will be able to run simultaneously and in the background along with Apple's own built-in applications, as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com). While multitasking will be important for the iPhone and iPod touch, it'll be even more important for the iPad, the analyst said.
