'MUG Event Calendar': it's all about Macworld...

While "The MUG Event Calendar" isn't completely quiet this week from a local meeting perspective, it clearly belongs to Macworld 2011, since that’s where everyone will be.

There will be a user group reunion event at Macworld on Thursday, but the real action will be on the show floor and in the conferences, running through Saturday. Two separate groups are planning bus trips to the show, while many others will be represented by their members as attendees.

"The MUG Event Calendar" can be found at The MUG Center (http://www.mugcenter.com), an online resource for Mac User Groups. MUGs are good places for making new friends in the Mac community, improving your computing skills, finding solutions to technical problems, and perhaps locating a good deal on used hardware. For more info on MUGs, and to find the location of the one nearest you, go to Apple's MUG page (...

Verizon iPhone's Personal Hotspot will pause web data when...

Verizon tells "The LA Times" (http://macte.ch/WuCA1) the Verizon iPhone 4's Personal Hotspot feature will pause web data when a call is taken on the handset.

Ken Muche, a Verizon spokesman, said that the company has a policy of pausing any web data on any phone with Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities when a call comes in and is answered, so as to maintain the call's quality.

"If you do two things at once and you do both of them poorly, what's the point?," Muche told the "Times." "That's part of the reason we don't have the same dropped call issues that other carriers do. We really do believe that a phone is only as good as the network it's on and this is the way we have always looked at it and that's why we aren't willing to sacrifice call quality."

While using the Personal Hotspot on the Verizon iPhone, or any other phone with the feature if a call isn't answered web data will go on uninterrupted, he said....

Belgium competition minister eyeing 'unfair' Apple...

Apple wrote to European publishers earlier this month outlawing the private exchange when a reader downloads a mag or newspaper from within an app. Apple says subscriptions must use the company's own billing mechanism with Apple getting a 30% cut.

However, Belgium competition minister Vincent van Quickborne doesn't think this is fair and has launched a "rapid" competition investigation into the issue, reports "The Register" (http://macte.ch/DDN5v). On the other hand, Apple doesn't have a monopoly share of the digital reader market, so "it might be hard to make that one stick," the article says.

News Corp's Project Alesia was created with the intention of offering a licensing system to all comers on equitable terms. However, "the print industry didn't have the brains to join in" and the 100-man project was dismantled last autumn, says "The Register."

Analyst: Apple invests in 'tens of millions' of iOS...

The most likely use of Apple's secret US$3.9 billion long-term supply investment is for tens of millions of displays for the iPhones and iPads the company plans to sell in the near future, Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty said in a note to investors, as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com).

She estimated that Apple's $3.9 billion investment could purchase about 136 million iPhone displays, or approximately 60 million iPad displays. If those displays were coupled with touch panels, the money could buy Apple 100 million iPhone panels, or 40 million for the iPad, Huberty adds.

Report: 65% of Apple's sales came from iOS devices

The iPhone and iPad generated US$15 billion of revenue for Apple last quarter. In addition, the iPod touch generated about $2.3 billion, implying that iOS based devices were responsible for sales of $17.3 billion -- or 65% of Apple's revenue, says the asymco research group (http://macte.ch/J7SsG).

Mac OS X powered hardware generated 20% of sales. The sale of Mac OS X software (both the operating system and applications for it) accounted for another $786 million or 3% of total. In addition, asymco suggests the proportion of sales due to apps in the Apple App Store is nearly half, or another $600 million (a bit more than 2%).
