A-Shirt launches with Apple-inspired t-shirts

Following a successful launch on the French speaking market, A-Shirt (https://a-shirt.club/) is launching in the English speaking market and is inviting all Apple fans to join the club, which specializes in Apple inspired t-shirts.

"Following the successful launch in the French speaking market last December, we are happy to invite all Apple addicts out there to join the A-Shirt Club," says co-founder Cyril Pavillard. AKVIS announces Pets Frame Pack for ArtSuite

AKVIS (www.akvis.com) has announced a new frame pack for AKVIS ArtSuite. The program allows users to decorate their photos with frames and effects.

Extra frame packs can be installed to the program to increase its functionality. The new Pets Pack includes 60 frames targeted to animal lovers. You can frame photos of your pet with nature decorations, surround it by furry and feathered friends, by its favorite toys, food and treats.

The frame packs can only be used in the AKVIS ArtSuite Standalone program (with Home Standalone, Home Deluxe, Business licenses). A frame pack can be added to ArtSuite by placing the archive into a folder specified in the program's preferences.

Apple plans March 9 special event

Apple has announced a special event for Monday, March 9. An invitation send to the press shows a picture of an invitation with the wording "spring forward."

The event will almost certainly offer details on the upcoming Apple Watch, such as a precise release data and pricing. So far Apple has only said the smartwatch would be available in April with prices starting at US$350.

It's also possible that the rumored 12-inch MacBook Air with Retina display could be announced. Apple will hold the special event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.

The Apple events page (http://www.apple.com/live/) invites you to come back on March 9 at 10 a.m. Pacific, 1 p.m. Eastern, when live video from the presentation will be available. Live streaming requires Safari 5.1.10 or later on OS X 10.6.8 or later, or Safari on iOS 6 or later.

iOS takes record-high profit share in smartphone operating...

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics (www.strategyanalytics.com), global smartphone operating profit reached US$21 billion in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2014. The Android operating system captured a record-low 11% global smartphone profit share during the quarter. In contrast, while Apple's iOS took a record-high 89% profit share.

Global smartphone operating profit grew 31% annually from US$16.2 billion in Q4 2013 to US$21.2 billion in Q4 2014, notes the research group.

"Apple iOS continues to tighten its grip on the smartphone industry," says Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics. "Apple's strategy of premium products and lean logistics is proving hugely profitable. Android's weak profitability for its hardware partners will worry Google. Tim Cook to deliver George Washington University's...

Apple CEO Tim Cook will deliver George Washington University’s commencement address May 17 and will be awarded an honorary doctorate of public service, the university announced Wednesday night.

"I am delighted that Tim Cook has accepted our invitation to give this year’s commencement address on the National Mall," George Washington President Steven Knapp said. "I know our graduating students will be inspired and enlightened by his reflections on the lessons he has garnered from his distinguished career as a highly effective leader at the forefront of technological innovation."

Cook was the Financial Times' Person of the Year for 2014, and in 2012 was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine. He joined Apple in 1998, and served as chief operating officer prior to being named CEO. Previously, he was an executive at Compaq, now part of Hewlett-Packard Co., Intelligent Electronics and IBM.

Movavi Photo Editor adds background removal, more

Movavi Photo Editor (http://www.movavi.com/photosuite), a photo editing toolkit for Mac OS X (10.6 and higher) and Windows, has been revved to version 2.0.

The upgrade adds such new features as background removal, which lets users delete the existing background in a photograph and replace it with solid color fill or even a totally different image. Photos can also be saved with a transparent background in .png format.

PCI Geomatics implements support for KazEOSat-1

PCI Geomatics (www.pcigeomatics.com) has implemented support for KazEOSat-1, an Earth Observation satellite owned and operated by the Kazakhstan Gharysh Sapary (KGS), a division of Kazcosmos.

KazEOSat-1 is capable of producing imagery of up to 1-meter panchromatic and 4-meter multispectral. The satellite was launched from the European spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana in April of 2014, and reached operational readiness in July 2014. The sensor will produce imagery for the Kazakstan government to support decision making and policy in critical areas such as resource monitoring, resource management, land-use mapping, and environmental monitoring.

Altium announces Tasking C Compiler

Altium (www.altium.com) has announced the availability of a new C compiler for the Generic Timer Module (GTM-IP MCS) from the Robert Bosch GmbH.

The GTM IP module forms a generic timer platform for complex applications in the automotive industry like power train, power steering, chassis and transmission control. To serve these different application domains, the GTM provides a wide range of timer functions like counters, multi-action capture/compare, PWM functions, duty-cycle measurement and many more.

The GTM also features internal RISC-like programmable cores for data processing and complex output sequence generation. The IP is designed to run with minimal CPU interaction and to unload the CPU from handling interrupt service requests as much as possible.

Default Folder for Mac OS X upgraded to version 4.6.14

St. Clair Software (http://tinyurl.com/2gm24v) has released Default Folder X 4.6.14, an update to their utility for Mac OS X.

Default Folder X enhances the file dialogs in all Mac OS X applications. Its custom keyboard shortcuts put your favorite and recent folders at your fingertips. It provides fast navigation to your files, previews, integrated Spotlight tagging, and more.

Version 4.6.14 addresses compatibility issues, including fixing a bug that could cause crashes in ArchiCAD, Mathematica and Cubase 8. It also improves its Rebound and tagging features, updates support for QuickSilver, and offers the option to automatically resize file and folder icons as you resize file dialogs.

Apple Pay now available for Morgan Stanley Wealth Management...

Morgan Stanley Wealth Management (www.morganstanley.com) says that, using their iPhone 6/6Plus, clients can add their Morgan Stanley Debit Card to Apple Pay to pay for purchases in stores or within apps.

Once the Morgan Stanley Debit Card is securely added to Apple Pay, clients can hold their Apple smartphone near the contactless reader and, with the touch of a finger, the payment is made. When shopping within apps on their iOS device checking out can be as easy as selecting Apple Pay and placing a finger on Touch ID, says Eric Heaton, head of Morgan Stanley’s Private Banking Group.

Morgan Stanley Wealth Management clients’ account security is a key priority for the firm. The Apple Pay feature, which doesn't share the actual debit card number with the merchants or transmit it with payments, supports that goal, Heaton says.

iOS, Android have 96.3% of the smartphone operating system market

iOS and Android have inched closer to total domination of the worldwide smartphone market in both the fourth quarter (4Q14) and the calendar year 2014 (CY14).

According to data from the IDC research group (www.idc.com), Android and iOS accounted for 96.3% of all smartphone shipments, up slightly from 95.6% in 4Q13 and from 93.8% in CY13. In terms of year-over-year shipment growth, Android outpaced the overall smartphone market for CY14 (32.0% vs 27.7%, respectively) while iOS beat the market in 4Q14 (46.1% vs 29.2%, respectively).

"Many of the same drivers were in play for Android and iOS to tighten their grip on the market," says Ramon Llamas, research director with IDC's Mobile Phone team. "A combination of strong end-user demand, refreshed product portfolios, and the availability of low-cost devices – particularly for Android – drove volumes higher."

Moople has announced Dart (http://dart.email), a menubar app for the Mac that allows you to create and send emails with predefined answers.

The recipient just has to click a button to reply. According to the folks at Moople, there's no worrying about composing a message, less opportunity for procrastination and no ambiguity.

You can either send a Dart message with answers you define. If you really have to send a short message, you switch to regular mode which supports a whole 200 characters

Apple to invest €1.7 billion in new European data centers

Apple has announced a €1.7 billion plan to build and operate two data centers in Europe, each powered by 100% renewable energy.

The facilities, located in County Galway, Ireland, and Denmark’s central Jutland, will power Apple’s online services including the iTunes Store, App Store, iMessage, Maps and Siri for customers across Europe.

"We are grateful for Apple’s continued success in Europe and proud that our investment supports communities across the continent," said CEO Tim Cook in a press release. "This significant new investment represents Apple’s biggest project in Europe to date. We’re thrilled to be expanding our operations, creating hundreds of local jobs and introducing some of our most advanced green building designs yet."
