A spokeswoman for the European Commission, the European Union's executive arm, told the "WSJ" that the commission was aware of the new subscription service and was "carefully monitoring the situation." The Justice Department and the FTC are both interested in examining whether Apple is running afoul of U.S. antitrust laws by...

Sony has no plans to withdraw Sony Music songs from Apple's iTunes Store as payback for Apple's decision to block the Sony e-reader app from the Apple App Store, says "Business Insider" (http://macte.ch/gKE4B).

Earlier this week, it was reported that Sony might pull its artists from Apple's iTunes Store, as well as withhold its games from the iPhone, in what could spark an "all-out war" between the two companies, according to "Yahoo News" (http://macte.ch/qv7oI).

Sony plans to launch a rival online music store to iTunes in Australia called Music Unlimited. The company may also be planning to launch a gaming service that would enable mobile phone users to play first generation Playstation games on their handsets -- a service Sony says is unlikely to be available through iTunes.

Apple reportedly secures 60% of global touch capacity

In order to achieve its internal goal of shipping 40 million iPad products in 2011, Apple has occupied close to 60% of the global touch panel capacity causing tight supply among Apple's competitors, reports "DigiTimes" (http://macte.ch/vWEql), quoting unnamed "sources from upstream component makers."

Sources from tablet makers told "DigiTimes" that the component shortage is causing their shipment volumes to be unable to catch up with their orders, especially for second-tier players. Touch panels are currently suffering the most serious shortage due to Apple holding control over the capacity of major touch panel makers such as Wintek and TPK, and with US-based RIM, Motorola and Hewlett-Packard (HP) also competing for related components, second-tier players are already out of the game, the article adds.

Sources from iPad distributors told "DigiTimes" that in 2010, Apple's order forecasts to its original...
