Worldwide smartphone market posts 11.6% year-over-year growth in...

According to the latest preliminary release from IDC (www.idc.com), vendors shipped a total of 337.2 million smartphones worldwide in the second quarter of 2015 (2Q15), up 11.6% from the 302.1 million units in 2Q14.

The 2Q15 shipment volume represents the second highest quarterly total on record. Following an above average first quarter (1Q15), smartphone shipments were still able to remain slightly above the previous quarter thanks to robust growth in many emerging markets. In the worldwide mobile phone market (inclusive of smartphones), vendors shipped 464.6 million units, down -0.4% from the 466.3 million units shipped 2Q14.

"The overall growth of the smartphone market was not only driven by the success of premium flagship devices from Samsung, Apple, and others, but more importantly by the abundance of affordable handsets that continue to drive shipments in many key markets," says Anthony Scarsella, research...

Juniper: Apple is the biggest smartwatch seller yet

Juniper Research (www.juniperresearch.com) estimates that Apple sold between 2 and 2.5 million watches this quarter, bringing in approximately US$1 billion in revenue. That makes it the best-selling smartwatch in the market, with over six million sales expected by year-end.

"However, despite buyers being satisfied with the device, we continue to see that the product is running out of steam," says Juniper devices analyst James Moar. "We would also expect a decline in sales following launch, especially as the first half of the year draws to a close. This means we are unlikely to see more than seven million Apple Watches sold by the end of 2015, even with a boost to sales over the Christmas period."

Researcher discloses OS X privilege escalation vulnerability

German researcher Stefan Esser from security audit firm SektionEins has disclosed a privilege escalation vulnerability in Mac OS X that's yet to be fixed in the latest release of the operating system, according to ZDNet (http://tinyurl.com/pa6n8h8).

He says the security flaw affects OS X 10.10.x and relates to new features added by the iPad and iPhone maker in the newest evolutions of the OS, Yosemite and El Capitan. The new features exploitable by the vulnerability are based upon the dynamic linker dyld and environment variable DYLD_PRINT_TO_FILE, which enables error logging to an arbitrary file.

Esser says it's "unclear" whether Apple knows about the security flaw or not, as it has already been patched in the first beta versions of OS X El Capitan 10.11, but not in the current release of OS X 10.10.4 or in the current beta of OS X 10.10.5, which has been released to public beta testers.

Canalys: Apple ships 4.2 million watches

Apple became the world’s leading vendor of wearable bands in the second quarter of 2015, according to Canalys (www.canalys.com) estimates.

With 4.2 million shipments, it easily overtook Fitbit, Xiaomi and all the smart watch vendors, despite the Apple Watch’s significantly higher pricing. Apple has done an excellent job designing its WatchKit SDK [software development kit], which it delivered "quickly and comprehensively," says the research group.

Native WatchKit extensions provide a capable developer platform without sacrificing battery life. But early sales were hindered due to two factors. Firstly, Apple missed the fourth quarter 2014 holiday season. Secondly, supply constraints stalled shipments for the first couple months after launch.

"The Apple Watch is the most sophisticated smart watch to date, and it has proved popular with Apple fans worldwide," says Chris Jones, vice president and...
