Apple announces World AIDS Day 2014 Campaign for (RED)

To mark World AIDS Day 2014, Apple and app developers are inviting customers to help (RED) achieve the goal of an AIDS-free generation.

For the next two weeks, a special section of the App Store called Apps for (RED) will offer 25 apps with exclusive new content where all proceeds will go directly to the Global Fund to fight AIDS. In addition, Apple will donate a portion of sales at Apple’s retail and online stores around the world on two of the biggest shopping days of the year: Friday, Nov. 28, and Monday, Dec. 1.

Acrosync announces an rsync client for Mac OS X that supports...

Acrosync has released Acrosync for Mac, a new rsync client with a graphical user interface (GUI) that also supports Dropbox-like automatic upload and Time Machine style incremental backups.

Acrosync for Mac is a folder synchronization tool based on the rsync protocol, so it can sync with any computer or device that has rsync installed, such as Mac and Linux computers, NAS boxes, and VPS or dedicated servers, or even rsync storage providers. Users may connect via SSH or Rsyncd and much more.

Acrosync's interface lets you set up multiple sync or backup profiles. After the first sync, on subsequent syncs only the new and modified files will be transferred, and, for each modified file, only the changed parts will be transferred, thanks to the clever rsync algorithm.

DEVONthink and DEVONnote updated with iCloud Drive support

DEVONtechnologies has updated all editions of its intelligent information and document manager DEVONthink, as well as the smart notebook DEVONnote.

Version 2.8.2 of all editions of DEVONthink fully supports indexing files and folders stored in iCloud Drive. An additional script indexes all user-generated folders on iCloud Drive without manually adding folders or documents to the database. Users can install it with a single click from the built-in Support Assistant.

DEVONthink 2.8.2 now indexes and searches documents created with the application Scapple. New preference options store an author name that the app reuses in various places where the user adds or creates metadata. Users can set a default image zoom and default PDF display modes, too. ABBYY has released FineReader Pro for Mac, a professional OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software product for document scanning and conversion on Macs.

Newly added support for Mac Automator actions and AppleScript commands now gives customers the ability to create automated document conversion tasks or workflows. Mac users can link document processing steps together to create simple, self-running OCR workflows. 

For example, a user could create a "watched folder" function which automatically processes documents, or whole batches of documents, as they are dropped into the folder. Watched folders can be also set to process documents only at scheduled times.

AppleXsoft File Recovery updated for Mac OS X Yosemite

AppleXsoft Software (www.applexsoft.com) has released a new version (5.1.1.3) of AppleXsoft File Recovery, a do-it-yourself recovery software tool for Mac OS X. The upgrade has been visually redesigned, sports a fully rebuild recovery engine and is revved for Yosemite.

Touch Tech Kids has published Messy Mia and the Tale of Ancient Tech. It's an US$3.99 original storybook app about retro technology. Messy Mia tells the story of a young girl learning how her parents survived without modern technology such as laptops, tablets, broadband and mobile phones.

JSV Ventures has announced Alchemy 1000. The puzzle app starts off with the four basic elements: earth, air, fire and water. Users mix elements to create new objects: a beer, a star, an ATM, etc. The object of the game is to find all 1000. Alchemy 1000 is free, but does offer in-app purchases.

Liber Primus Games says its handheld fantasy adventure app, Narborion Saga is available as a free download. It's an epic fantasy story that writes itself as you play.

Tiffen Company releases upgrade to its Tiffen Dfx Digital Filter...

The Tiffen Company has released version 4 of its Tiffen Dfx digital filter suite.

The upgrade delivers more video and still image effects to its package. Version 4 adds OFX plug-in support, making it compatible with digital intermediate programs Blackmagic Design Davinci Resolve and Assimilate Scratch, as well as the high-end Nuke visual effects program from The Foundry.

The Tiffen Dfx 4 upgrade also includes support for Sony Vegas NLEs as well as 12 new visual effects filters, 93 new historical photographic processes, 30 new motion picture film stocks, a dramatic speed increase in GPU acceleration, state-of-the-art floating point precision for a non-destructive workflow, and Retina display support for Mac.

BeLight Software releases Printworks for Mac OS X

BeLight Software has launched a new product called Printworks for Mac (http://tinyurl.com/pe2k9hj). It's a desktop publishing tool to help you design holiday cards, flyers, calendars, brochures, business cards, labels and envelopes.

Printworks comes with over 400 pre-designed templates and 1,000 clipart images. You can up that number to 40,000 with an in-app purchase. To use you simply choose and customize a template — or design a document from scratch.

Adobe announces Lightroom 5.7 and Camera Raw 8.7

Adobe has announced the availability of Lightroom 5.7, Adobe Camera Raw 8.7 and DNG Converter 8.7 as final releases on Adobe.com and through the update mechanism in Photoshop CC and Photoshop CS6.

This release corrects issues reported in earlier versions of Lightroom 5 and Camera Raw 8.  In addition, raw file format support is added for 24 new cameras including the Canon EOS 7D Mark II, Nikon D750, and Sony ILCE-5100. Specifically for Lightroom 5.7, new features include an importer tool for customers migrating from Aperture and iPhoto, as well as the ability to view comments and feedback from shared collections on Lightroom web. 
 
Lightroom is a digital photography workflow solution that helps amateur and professional photographers import, manage, enhance and showcase all their images within one application. The Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in provides access to raw image formats produced by many leading digital cameras.

Red Giant Universe expands again

The Red Giant Universe (www.redgiant.com) is expanding once again with the release of Universe 1.3, the latest update to the visual effects environment for Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro X and Motion, Sony Vegas and Blackmagic’s DaVinci Resolve.

Now with 81 effects, version 1.3 features 13 new tools, seven of which are plug-ins from CrumplePop. The new update also adds support for Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve, along with several updates to existing effects.

Yoink for Mac OS X ready for Yosemite

Matthias Gansrigler has updated his drag and drop "helper" Mac app, Yoink. to version 3.0.

Yoink is designed to simplify drag and drop between windows, spaces and (full screen) apps by providing a "shelf" where dragged files can be placed, to free the mouse for other actions like navigating. Version 3.0 adds some new features, user interface enhancements to complement Mac OS X Yosemite, and a couple of smaller additions.

Yoink's window can now be resized or automatically adjusted in height based on the number of files in it. You can now quickly view files in a file-stack in the app by right-clicking onto it. FreeFileSync revved for Mac OS X, Windows, Linux

FreeFileSync (http://www.freefilesync.org) has released version 6.11 of its open source file synchronization utility for Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. The new release runs under all modern versions of these operating systems, including Mac OS X Yosemite and Windows 10.

FreeFileSync 6.11 features a new synchronization progress graph that rounds out a library of graphs and messages that deliver feedback on multiple visual and textual levels. The software also provides context menu (right-click) support that lets users immediately edit FreeFileSync configuration files and launch the program.

Other new features in version 6.11 include the ability to ignore time shifts when making comparisons between files, the ability to preview RAW CR2 image files from digital cameras, and enhanced comparison progress statistics and configuration dialog layouts.

Yosemite update fails to fix some Wi-Fi problems

Apple's release of Mac OS X 10.10.1, which was intended to — among other things — improve Wi-Fi reliability, hasn't completely resolved the issue.

On Apple's Support Communities, there are still complaints of dropped connections and slow speeds on Macs that were updated to Mac OS X Yosemite. In fact, "ComputerWorld" (http://tinyurl.com/q2fsysm) notes one support thread that contains more than 1,100 posts. Here are a couple of the complaints:

"I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss."
