'Thunderstrike' hack can affect Mac firmware

A security researcher speaking at the Chaos Computer Congress in Hamburg demonstrated a hack that rewrites an Intel Mac's firmware using a Thunderbolt device with attack code in an option ROM, reports 9to5Mac (www.9to5Mac.com).

Known as "Thunderstrike," the proof of concept (http://tinyurl.com/nla6jqt), infects the Apple Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) in a way he claims can't be detected, nor removed by reinstalling Mac OS X. According to researcher Trammel Hudson, it's a "a vulnerability that allows the installation of persistent firmware modifications into the EFI boot ROM of Apple's popular MacBooks. The bootkit can be easily installed by an evil-maid via the externally accessible Thunderbolt ports and can survive reinstallation of OSX as well as hard drive replacements. Once installed, it can prevent software attempts to remove it...

Apple to save historic barn on 'spaceship campus' site

Apple has set aside a place on its "spaceship" campus for the Glendenning Barn, named for a pioneer family whose land "became a magnet for tech companies after the blooms faded from their orchards," reports the Mercury News (mercurynews.com).

In the years before his death in 2011, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs decided that he wanted to tear up the husk of Hewlett-Packard and bring the land back to its roots, when it was known as the Valley of Heart's Delight for all its orchards and flowering trees, the article adds. When finished, the 175-acre site off Wolfe and Homestead roads in Cupertino will be transformed from 80% asphalt and concrete to 80% greenery and open space.

The upcoming campus, which will supplement and not replace Apple’s current headquarters at 1 Infinite Loop, was a pet project of the late Jobs. It’s a four-story, 2.8 million square foot building to be built on land formerly occupied by Hewlett Packard’s campus. Originally slated to accommodate 6,000...

Apple expected to reverse iPad misfortunes in 2015

According to the latest forecasts from market intelligence firm, ABI Research, tablet growth is expected to resume and continue over the next five years with a forecast of nearly 290 million tablet shipments in 2019.

As the calendar year comes to a close, many of the world’s tablet vendors are looking forward to opportunities in 2015 and are hoping to avoid a repeat of lackluster 2014 results. Apple, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Google are expected to show year-over-year declines in branded tablet unit volume, while Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, LG, Microsoft, and Samsung should end higher in calendar year 2014.

"Historically, Apple has counted approximately 35% of its iPad sales in the last calendar quarter of the year," says Senior Practice Director Jeff Orr.  :Unless Apple can pull off a 32+ million unit quarter, sales for CY2014 [calendar year 2014] will be down for the first year since the iPad launched."

ABI Research predicts iPad sales to reach...

Kosada's new visual toolset lets you create live...

Apple introduced Quartz Composer in 2005, creating an impressive platform for interactive media content creators. Now Kosada has introduced Vuo 1.0, an alternative to Quartz Composer.

Media producers and digital artists have enjoyed the simplicity of using Quartz Composer's visual system of patches and cables to create interactive media and use it in their workflow. Designers could mix audio, video, and 2D and 3D effects in creative and innovative ways.

However, with a last major update in 2009, is Quartz Composer in decline? One group is not waiting to find out. The team that developed a set of Kineme plugins and apps for Quartz Composer decided to write their own tool: Vuo 1.0.

Kosada says its goal is to make Vuo useful to all multimedia artists, producers, and media-making non-programmers who want to create mixed, interactive media. To that end, they have worked extensively on user documentation, tutorial videos, and example compositions to make learning it...

Rob Papen launches RAW soft synth

Rob Papen Soundware has rolled out RAW, a new Mac (32- and 64-bit, AAX, AU, and VST for Mac OS X 10.6 or higher) and PC (32- and 64-bit, AAX and VST for Windows Vista, 7, and 8) compatible soft synth specializing in "distorted" sounds for electronic dance music production (and beyond)

"RAW has a focus on ‘distorted’ sounds, so this means that it has a different signal setup, synthesizer-wise," says Rob Papen. "We have two oscillators and a filter, but what is new when compared to our other synthesizers is that you have an EQ that can be pre- or post-distortion. After that, there is also a waveshaper and dedicated distortion module with several types of distortion, as well as a low FI control. This is new to this synthesizer, and it’s part of the concept that the distortions are on the voice level, so it’s not just a case of a total signal going into the distortions, but rather each voice has its own waveshaper, distortion, and low FI."

In addition to the X/Y fields...
