Many of these tablet makers also outsource the blueprints of their products to third parties,...

ITC to look into Apple's patent complaint against Samsung
The International Trade Commission says (http://macte.ch/Gp8wS) it will look into Apple's patent complaint against Samsung. The investigation is based on a complaint filed by Apple Inc. of Cupertino, CA, on July 5, 2011. The complaint alleges violations of section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 in the importation into the United States and sale of certain electronic digital media devices and components thereof that infringe patents asserted by Apple. The complainant requests that the USITC issue an exclusion order and cease and desist orders. In June Samsung filed an ITC complaint against Apple, asking for an import ban against the iPhone, iPad and iPod. On June 17 Apple amended and expanded its complaint against Samsung, asserting more patents and other intellectual property rights than before against an extended list of allegedly infringing products. In April Samsung filed patent lawsuits against Apple over the U.S. firm's iPhone and iPad after Apple claimed Samsung's smartphones...

Canalys (http://www.canalys.com) has published its worldwide country-level second-quarter smart phone market estimates, showing that Apple has overtaken Nokia as the top smartphone vendor. In a note to clients -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) -- Sterne Agree analyst said his sources indicate that the upcoming iPhone 5 could be a more significant upgrade than previous rumors have suggested, sporting a larger display and thinner design. He thinks the fifth generation iPhone will feature a slightly larger display than the current 3.5-inch screen found on the iPhone 4. It's also expected to feature the same dual-core A5 processor already found in the iPad 2. In addition, Agree says the new iPhone will feature a similar form factor and size to the iPhone 4, but will sport a thinner bezel. However, it's not expected to have 4G-LTE high-speed wireless data connectivity. The new technology still has issues with battery life and network coverage, problems that Wu believes Apple will fix at some point in the future.

Kodak to sell patents involved in Apple lawsuit?
Eastman Kodak is exploring a sale of one the company's crown jewels: the patent for previewing photographs currently being litigated against Apple and Research In Motion, reports "The Wall Street Journal" (http://macte.ch/6Z9aC). The imaging company recently said it is considering the sale of 1,100 patents, or 10% of the company's portfolio. Kodak said the patents at stake covered capturing, storing, organizing and sharing digital images, but didn't specify whether the sale would include the one at issue in the Apple and RIM lawsuits. In January Kodak filed lawsuits against Apple and Research In Motion (RIM), alleging the infringement of Kodak digital imaging technology. The Kodak complaint, filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), specifically claimed that Apple’s iPhones and RIM’s camera-enabled BlackBerry devices infringe a Kodak patent that covers technology related to a method for previewing images. Separately, Kodak filed two suits -- also in January -- against...

On July 6 HTC announced an US$300 million deal to buy S3 Graphics, less than a week after that company won an ITC ruling against Apple over two patents. In a July 15 initial determination, the same commission ruled in Apple’s favor on two other patents. Regarding the latter, the US trade commission said that HTC was guilty of...

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 infringes 10 Apple patents, including the “look and feel,” and touchscreen technology of the iPad, Steven Burley, a lawyer for Apple, told Federal Court Justice Annabelle Bennett in Sydney yesterday. Apple sought an Australian injunction and also wants to stop Samsung from selling the tablet in other countries, Burley said without specifying where, notes "Bloomberg." This is the latest skirmish in the ongoing legal battle between Apple and Samsung. In June Samsung filed an International Trade Commission complaint against Apple, asking for an import ban against the iPhone, iPad and iPod. On June 17 Apple amended and expanded its complaint against Samsung, asserting more patents and other intellectual property rights than before...

Nortel Networks Corp. (http://www2.nortel.com) says its subsidiary, Nortel Networks Limited (NNL), and certain of its other subsidiaries, including Nortel Networks Inc. and Nortel Networks UK Limited (in administration), have completed the sale of all of Nortel's remaining patents and patent applications to a consortium consisting of Apple, EMC, Ericsson, Microsoft, Research In Motion and Sony, for a cash purchase price of US$4.5 billion. The sale includes more than 6,000 patents and patent applications spanning wireless, wireless 4G, data networking, optical, voice, Internet, service provider, semiconductors and other patents. The extensive patent portfolio touches nearly every aspect of telecommunications and additional markets as well, including Internet search and social networking, according to the folks at Nortel. iPad leads in brand satisfaction among US consumers
Apple commands the highest satisfaction rating of all tablet sellers among U.S. consumers -- along with the vast majority of sales and a high degree of loyalty among owners -- according to the new report from IHS iSuppli (http://www.ihs.com/). To measure consumer satisfaction, U.S. tablet owners surveyed were asked how likely they would be to recommend their tablet to friends or family members. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 0 indicating the owner would not recommend it, 10 indicating the owner is very likely to recommend it, and 5 being neutral, iPad owners gave an average rating of 8.8 to their Apple iPads, the highest rating of all the 11 top-ranked brands mentioned by consumers surveyed. More than 80% of Apple owners rated their tablet at eight or higher on the recommendation scale. Fewer than 1% gave a rating of less than five.  In a surprise, China’s Shenzhen Zenithink Technologies, came in a close second at 8.75, although the overall sample for that model was comparatively small...

Analyst forecasts Surround Sound Apple HDTV for March 2012
Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry told clients in a note -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) that he thinks Apple will launch a new high-definition television in March 2012 with three screen sizes and price points. Chowdry says his "converged view" of data from various developers is "probably" 75% accurate The analyst thinks any television set from Apple would have just one cable. He adds that the HDTV will probably be about two inches thick and sport a 16-speaker, Surround Sound system.

Majority of Verizon iPhone customers want the iPhone 5
The bulk of of Verizon customers are waiting for the iPhone 5 instead of buying the currently available iPhone 4, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. In a note to clients -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) -- he says polled a small sample of 216 mobile phone users about their phones and carriers. His sampling found that many Verizon customers are waiting for the iPhone 5 as the iPhone 4 only went on sale to Verizon customers in February, a full eight months after the handset was first sold to AT&T customers. Of Verizon subscribers who don't have an iPhone but plan to buy an iPhone next, 74% are waiting for the iPhone 5. Just 53% of AT&T customers who plan to buy an iPhone said they are waiting for the fifth-generation model. "This pent up demand for the next iPhone at Verizon may drive numbers higher than the 3.8 (million) units we are modeling Apple to sell through Verizon in the September quarter," Munster told clients. "And our...

Adobe has announced the first public preview release of Adobe Edge, a new HTML5 web motion and interaction design tool that allows web designers to bring animation, similar to that created in Flash Professional, to websites using standards likes HTML, JavaScript and CSS. Because of rapid changes around HTML5, the company is adopting an open development methodology for Adobe Edge and is releasing the software on the Adobe Labs site much earlier than normal in the development process -- before it even reaches beta -- in order to allow user feedback to help shape the final product, according to Paul Gubbay, vice president of Design and Web Engineering, Adobe. Personal Audio can't double dip in patent infringement...
A U.S. District Judge said Friday that the $8 million in damages Apple has to pay to patent licensing company Personal Audio for violations of a playlist patent from the iPod covers "past and future use of the technology" and should extend to the iPhone and iPad, reports "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com). Las month Apple was ordered by the U.S. District Court in Eastern Texas, to pay damages to Personal Audio for patent infringement. Personal Audio, a patent licensing company with an office in Beaumont, Texas, sued Apple in 2009 for US$84 million in damages, claiming infringement of two patents for downloadable playlists. The Texas jury agreed that the patents were infringed. However, District Judge Ron Clark ruled that Apple's $8 million in damages would provide a license for products not specifically named in the original complaint. -- Dennis Sellers

Apple's 'App Store' legal efforts causing...
Apple’s efforts to get Amazon to stop using the word “App Store” to describe its, well, app store haven't been successful yet, but Jobs & Company have caused Amazon some trouble in Germany. Amazon has recently stopped accepting new apps from developers there because of Apple’s legal action, reports "SplatF" (http://macte.ch/33i93). However, Apple will “probably” lose its court bid to stop Amazon.com Inc. from using the term “App store” for a service selling programs for Android devices, reports "Bloomberg Businessweek" (http://macte.ch/evXDr). In June, U.S. District Judge Phyllis Hamilton said after a hearing in Oakland, California, Wednesday that she is “probably” going to deny the motion because Apple hasn’t demonstrated confusion among consumers. Hamilton said she will review court filings before issuing a final decision. Apple’s difficulty demonstrating “real evidence of actual confusion” among consumers is a “stumbling block for Apple,” Hamilton said in court. “I’m troubled...

The Taiwan-based electronics manufacturing service provider makes iPads, iPhones and other products for Apple. The move underlines the drastic changes China-based manufacturers are forced to make as the country’s unlimited supply of cheap labour is running out, the article adds.
