Maintain serves up Cocktail 6.8.6 (Mountain Lion Edition)

Maintain has released Cocktail 6.8.1 (Mountain Lion Edition), the latest maintenance update for users running OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. This version ability to clear saved application states and the "Utilities" menu that allows quick access to miscellaneous utilities and assistants. It also contains improvements on the "Search for corrupted preference files" procedure.

Cocktail is a general purpose utility for OS X that lets users clean, repair and optimize their Mac. It requires OS X Mountain Lion or OS X Mountain Lion Server (10.8). Cocktail (Lion Edition) for OS X 10.7, Cocktail (Snow Leopard Edition) for OS X 10.6 and Cocktail (Leopard Edition) for OS X 10.5 are available for download from the Maintain website.

The radio trumps online services for music discovery

When it comes to discovering new music nothing beats the good old radio. That's according to the results of an Edison Research survey which finds that 35% of Americans, who try to keep up with the latest music, consider FM/AM radio their number one source to keep up with the latest trends.

Personal recommendations are also popular when it comes to music, with 21% of the respondents mostly relying on their social circle to stay up-to-date. Among the plethora of online music services, surprisingly, YouTube is the most important one for music discovery, 9% of the respondents find new tunes on Google's video portal. Apple, Microsoft, others partner for PAI group

A diverse group of g companies — including Apple, DuPont, Ford, GE, IBM, Microsoft and Pfizer — have launched the Partnership for American Innovation (PAI) to safeguard America’s position as a global innovation leader. Former U.S. Patent Trademark Office (USPTO) Director David Kappos, now a partner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore, is a senior advisor to the group.

"As director of the USPTO, I saw firsthand the significant role the patent system plays in encouraging inventors, promoting investment in innovation, and creating jobs," Kappos says. "Now is not the time to gamble with America’s innovation engine — once patent protections are eliminated, they cannot be restored."

He adds that the members of the PAI are committed to the following principles:
° The American economy is best served by a strong patent system that protects high-quality innovation in all fields of technology.

Lenmar introduces ChugPlug, an external portable power pack for...

Lenmar Enterprises has released the ChugPlug, a portable power pack and battery charger for the MacBook. It's designed for the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro.

Marty Goldberg, president of Lenmar Enterprises, says the ChugPlug provides an additional three hours of power for the 13-inch MacBook Pro and four hours for the MacBook Air. It's designed to be the same height and weight of Apple's 60-watt MagSafe and connects with the MacBook power adapter.

Apple's WWDC 2014 kicks off June 2

Apple will hold its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) June 2 through June 6 at San Francisco’s Moscone West. At this year’s five-day conference, developers from around the world will learn about the future of iOS and OS X.

Apple says WWDC will feature more than 100 technical sessions, over 1,000 Apple engineers, hands-on labs to help developers integrate new technologies and fine tune their apps, as well as the Apple Design Awards which showcase the best apps from the past year.

Developers can apply for tickets via the WWDC website (developer.apple.com/wwdc) now through Monday, April 7, at 10 a.m. (Pacific), and tickets will be issued to attendees through random selection. Developers will know their status by Monday, April 7 at 5.

Product Manager for Mac OS X gets redesigned user interface

Tension Software (www.tensionsoftware.com) has launched Product Manager 2.0, an update of its Mac OS X app to manage company products from different standpoints. The new version has a redesigned user interface.

Product Manager is document based and can managed an "unlimited" number of documents, each with an "unlimited" number of products subdivided into families. Version 2.0 also adds a customized layout of values for any product, customizable label descriptions, and more.

Product Manager requires Mac OS X 10.8 or higher and costs US$40. It's available from the Tension Software web site and the Mac App Store.

Graphic Node unveils a new suite for iWork

Graphic Node has expanded its assortment of iWork templates with the release of Suite for iWork. It features a mixture of 576 templates — from business proposals and newsletters to posters and certificates — for Pages, Keynote, and Numbers.

Scourge: Outbreak now available on Steam for the Mac and PC

Tragnarion Studios says that Scourge: Outbreak, a futuristic, squad-based, third person shooter, is now available on Steam for the Mac and PC.

The game offers eight-player, player-vs.-player modes (DeathMatch, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag) in five maps. There's also a six hour-plus co-op campaign for four players in which each player has unique narrative elements.

RunServer introduces Classic Solitaire for the Mac

RunServer has introduced Classic Solitaire for Mac OS X. It's a copy of the original Klondike Solitaire card game.

Classic Solitaire feels like the old game, but sports high resolution cards redraw for Retina displays. The game requires Mac OS X 10.7 or later and costs US$0.99.

Are landline phones becoming endangered?

According to data provided by the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (PDF), landline phones are gradually losing relevance in the United States. The CDC has tracked phone ownership by U.S. households as a by-product of its biannual National Health Survey since 2004.

Mimecast brings its enterprise cloud services to Mac users

Mimecast — a cloud email security, archiving and continuity service —is bringing its enterprise products to Mac users via a native app, Mimecast for Mac.

Sky Battles launching on Steam Greenlight

Magnetic Studio says its air combat game, Sky Battles, will launch on Stream Greenlight in mid-2014. It will be available for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android platforms.

Here's how the game is described: "Sky Battles is a game where you battle against large iron beasts with different abilities. Krakens, dragons, robots and helicopters seek you out. Barrel roll, dodge, dive bomb and out wit these hellish behemoths.

"There are two game modes that will keep players entertained. The single player mode involves destroying large mechanical bosses and collecting gems, all within a limited time. Collect gems and destroy big bad bosses before time runs out. The online multiplayer modes allows players to dogfight against human opponents online. Red Giant announces BulletProof 1.2

Red Giant has announced BulletProof 1.2. The update brings more camera support and other improvements to the footage backup and preparation tool.

In addition to the current support for Canon and Nikon DSLRs and GoPro cameras, BulletProof now includes support for Panasonic and Sony DLSRs, and for the Canon C-series and XF-series cameras. The app is designed to solve several issues such as reliable back-up.

einstein's legacy has released Splice 2.0.1.  Splice is a movie management utility for Mac OS X. Targeted to professionals and amateur video content creators, it's a tool for organizing and joining a collection of video clips together into a single movie.

Apple updates iWork apps, Safari

Apple has updated its iWork apps for the Mac and for iCloud. It's also revved Safari.

Pages 5.2, Keynote 6.2, and Numbers 3.2 sport new templates, new effects and transitions, enhanced AppleScript support, as well as support for the "view only" setting for docs you share on iCloud. The iCloud version of the apps gets Retina display support and the ability to open iWork or Microsoft Office docs directly in iCloud Mail.

Apple has also released Safari 7.0.3. The new version of the web browser lets you turn off push notifications from specific websites and adds support for webpages with generic top-level domains. It also fixes some bugs and improves search functionality.

Voxeet 3DHD audio service comes to the Mac
