MacMate puts Time Machine in the cloud

MacMate (http://www.macmate.me) has announced the addition of Time Machine backup to its cloud disk solution to enable cloud-based backup of entire Macs.

Users can use the cloud space using traditional methods and apps that support FTP, SFTP, WebDav and native AFP, allowing the customer to use the disk from a variety of their favorite apps. It's the only cloud backup solution that allows this and brings enterprise-level offsite backup capability to consumer and small businesses, says Gary Hall, CEO of MacMate.

Time Machine allows you to select multiple disks as your backup locations and incrementally backs up changed data every hour, alternating between the disks. Traditionally these needed to be either physically connected to the Mac or as AppleShares on the network. MacMate bridges this gap by creating a mounted disk that the OS sees as a physical disk.

MacMate recommends that users have a...

iWorm malware could still be a problem for some Macs

Apple's security technologies for Mac OS X may still miss iWorm, a piece of malware discovered in late September that infected thousands of computers, according to the IDG News Service (http://tinyurl.com/qxuhav8).

Apple released an update for its XProtect antivirus engine to detect iWorm, but the update only detects when iWorm's installer is launched, which is a one-time operation, according to Patrick Wardle, director of research with Synack, a computer security company based in Redwood City, California. It means that computers already infected with iWorm before the update would still be compromised, notes IDG.

iWorm, which is a backdoor that can steal data from a computer, infected more than 18,000 machines, according to security company Dr. Web (http://tinyurl.com/k42z9kh). It does not exploit any vulnerabilities...

Law firm investigating retail pharmacies for blocking Apple Pay

The law firm of Schubert Jonckheer & Kolbe (www.schubertlawfirm.com) has launched an investigation into the conduct of retail pharmacies CVS and Rite Aid over their decision to block contactless payments, including Apple Pay and Google Wallet, in their retail stores.

The firm is currently considering a potential class action to restore Apple Pay service at CVS and Rite Aid stores. CVS and Rite Aid have long allowed contactless payments at their retail stores, but less than one week after Apple deployed Apple Pay, the large retail pharmacy chains disabled those system to prohibit the payment method.

According to the New York Times, this decision was predicated on CVS and Rite Aid’s membership in the so-called Merchant Customer Exchange (“MCX”), which includes retail big-box stores like Walmart and Best Buy. Instead of allowing Apple Pay or Google Wallet, the MCX has developed its own...

Swedish hacker claims to have found 'serious' security...

A white-hat hacker from Sweden says he's found a "serious" security hole in Mac OS X Yosemite that could allow an attacker to take control of your Mac, reports Macworld UK (http://tinyurl.com/m5etd52).

Emil Kvarnhammar, a hacker at Swedish security firm Truesec, calls the vulnerability "rootpipe." He says it's a "privilege escalation vulnerability," which means that even without a password an attacker could gain the highest level of access on a machine, known as root access. From there, the attacker has full control of the system.

Apple hasn't fixed the flaw yet, Kvarnhammar says, so Truesec won't provide details of how it works.

Seagate unveils object-based storage drive

Seagate has unveiled its object-based storage drive— the Seagate Kinetic HDD. Based on the Seagate Kinetic Open Storage platform, Kinetic HDD combines an open source object storage protocol with Ethernet connectivity to eliminate multiple layers of legacy software and hardware infrastructure.

Scott Horn, Seagate vice president of marketing at Seagate, says this simplifies cloud storage architectures. Fewer number of storage servers also reduces power consumption and headcount expenses associated with managing storage, resulting in lower operating costs, for a combined savings of up to 50%, he adds.

The platform enables servers and storage to be scaled independently and developed more rapidly. Cloud data centers can add servers and storage at entirely different rates, matching each precisely to their needs. In addition, HDD innovation can progress more rapidly as servers and operating systems are shielded from device changes through the Kinetic open source API. (...
