MacBook Pro + Parallels Desktop = the 'best Windows PC...

A new report (www.soluto.com/reports) from Soluto a Web service company, quantifiably concluded that the "MacBook Pro is the best Windows PC on the market," beating out traditional PCs.

The report based its findings on a number of criteria including application crashes, blue-screens-of-death, long boot times, etc.  According to the report, "if you’ve ever looked for an excuse to buy a MacBook -- now you have it."

China court fines Apple for copyright breach

A Beijing court has ordered Apple to compensate three Chinese writers for selling their works via its app store without getting their permission, reports "ZDNet" (http://tinyurl.com/avpg77f), translating an article from the "China Daily" newspaper.

The Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court ruled in favor of the authors. Apple will have to pay them in excess of 730,000 yuan (about US$118,000) for the infringement. Apple had not gotten permission before selling their books on the Apple App Store, according to the court. The presiding judge, Feng Gang, said Apple has the duty of checking whether the books uploaded by third-party providers are in line with current laws.

Literature & Latte has introduced Scapple, a project planning and organization tool for Mac OS X (10.6.8 or higher).

Scapple is designed to help you get ideas down quickly and make connections between them. More like a freeform text editor, it allows you to make notes anywhere on the page and to connect them using straight dotted lines or arrows.

Mail Designer for Mac OS X revved to version 1.3

Equinux has updated Mail Designer for Mac OS X (10.5.8 and higher) to version 1.3. The upgrade sports an interface to send and distribute mail designs and newsletters with Campaign Monitor.

Mail Designer allows users to create individual mail designs for newsletters, offers, invitations or personal emails that can be sent to customers, colleagues or any larger group of recipients. Each design can be saved as a template and sent through Apple Mail. Native Instruments introduces Pulswerk Expansion for Maschine

Native Instruments has released Pulswerk, a new Maschine Expansion designed for minimalistic house and techno. It was created by sound designer Denis Gökdag, the creator of NI's Maschine Expansion Transistor Punch, and the name behind Surround SFX and Zynaptiq.

Aside from its 30 drum kits, Pulswerk contains 20 Special Kits created exclusively with pitched sound sources. The Expansion also features an array of Multi-Effect Kits containing pre-sequenced, tempo synced effect chains and 60 new Massive presets.

AT&T activates 4.8 million iPhones in first fiscal quarter

AT&T, in announcing the results of its first fiscal quarter, said it had activated 4.8 million iPhones during the period. The Apple smartphone accounted for 80% of AT&T's six million total smartphones.

During the fiscal quarter, AT&T reported strong earnings per share and cash flows in the first-quarter driven by strong mobile data growth, solid postpaid net adds and continued strong gains in U-verse services, says Randall Stephenson, company chairman and CEO.

"Our wireless network performance continues to be terrific," he adds. "And that helped drive our best ever first quarter for smartphone sales, improved wireless churn and strong growth in mobile data revenues. We also posted record sales of our U-verse high-speed IP service. Across all of these areas, we’ve built a solid foundation for future growth in mobile Internet and IP broadband, which will only expand as we progress with Project VIP.”

Sprint sells 1.5 million iPhones in first fiscal quarter

Sprint Nextel Corp. has reported operating income of $29 million for its first fiscal quarter. The company's adjusted OIBDA [operating income before depreciation and amortization] of US$1.5 billion was the highest in nearly four years.

Sprint (www.sprint.com) reported smartphone sales of five million. Of that number, 1.5 were iPhones with 43% being sold to new Sprint customers. Eighty-six percent of quarterly Sprint platform postpaid handset sales were smartphones.

"This is a transformative year for Sprint and we’ve gotten off to a good start," says CEO Dan Hesse. "Record Sprint platform service revenue and subscriber levels fueled our performance."

Alien Skin Software has announced Exposure 5, the new version of its flagship photography effects software. The tool is designed to help digital photographers achieve accurate film simulation using a range of creative effects.

Exposure 5 can be used as a plug-in with popular host software or as a stand-alone program. FileMaker survey: companies now mobilizing in-house business...

Move over, road warriors, and enter the new era of productivity warriors. Many businesses are now using mobile devices to automate inside their building or company campus, according to a recent survey by FileMaker, Inc. (www.filemaker.com). Further, businesses are building custom solutions to automate and “mobilize” processes in nearly every department.

Database software maker FileMaker -- with millions of deployments, including more than 500,000 downloads of FileMaker Go, a free app for accessing FileMaker databases from iPad and iPhone -- polled customers on their use of mobile devices to boost business productivity. The research included a survey of 499 customers who have deployed FileMaker solutions on iOS devices as well as an analysis of 102 mobility case studies.

Dates, details for Apple's 2013 WWDC announced

Apple will hold its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) June 10 through June 14 at San Francisco’s Moscone West. At the five-day conference, developers from around the world will learn about the future of iOS and OS X.

WWDC will also feature more than 100 technical sessions presented by over 1,000 Apple engineers, hands-on labs to help developers integrate new technologies, as well as the Apple Design Awards, a showcase of the most outstanding apps available through the Apple App Store and Mac App Store. Typinator 5.5 for Mac OS X adds calculation fields

Ergonis Software (http://www.ergonis.com) has released Typinator 5.5, the latest version of its tool for auto-typing text and auto-correcting typos systemwide across all Mac OS X applications. The upgrade introduces calculation fields, which provides text expansions for users without any programming skills.

With a simple inclusion mechanism, text expansions can execute external scripts and include their results in the expansion. Typinator supports scripts written in in many different languages like AppleScript, Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, and arbitrary shell scripting languages.

Apple more than doubles capital return program

Apple has announced that its Board of Directors has authorized a significant increase to the company’s program to return capital to shareholders. The company expects to utilize a total of $100 billion of cash under the expanded program by the end of calendar 2015.

This represents a $55 billion increase to the program announced last year and translates to an average rate of US$30 billion per year from the time of the first dividend payment in August 2012 through December 2015.

As part of this program, the Board has increased its share repurchase authorization to $60 billion from the $10 billion level announced last year. This is the largest single share repurchase authorization in history and is expected to be executed by the end of calendar 2015. Apple also expects to utilize about $1 billion annually to net-share-settle vesting restricted stock units.

Apple reports second quarter fiscal results

Apple has announced financial results for its fiscal 2013 second quarter ending March 30. The company posted quarterly revenue of US$43.6 billion and quarterly net profit of $9.5 billion, or $10.09 per diluted share.

These results compare to revenue of $39.2 billion and net profit of $11.6 billion, or $12.30 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 37.5% compared to 47.4% n the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 66% of the quarter’s revenue.

The company sold 37.4 million iPhones in the quarter, compared to 35.1 million in the year-ago quarter. Apple also sold 19.5 million iPads during the quarter, compared to 11.8 million in the year-ago quarter. The company sold just under 4 million Macs, compared to 4 million in the year-ago quarter.

ITC dismisses Motorola Mobility complaint against Apple

The US International Trade Commission (ITC) has dismissed a complaint by Google-owned Motorola Mobility accusing Apple of infringing on patented technology that makes touchscreens ignore fingers when people are holding smartphones to their ears for calls, reports "ZDNet" (http://tinyurl.com/brycsyv).

The filing by acting ITC secretary Lisa Barton indicated that the investigation into the Motorola complaint filed in late 2010 has been terminated. The ITC reasoned that the technology at issue in the patents wasn't original enough to support the accusation.

This is part of an ongoing battle.
