Default X update for OS X improves performance, compatibility

St. Clair Software has released Default Folder X 5.0.2 (http://tinyurl.com/2gm24v), an update to their Mac utility.

The tool enhances the file dialogs in all Mac OS X applications. It provides fast navigation to your files, previews, integrated Spotlight tagging, and more. Default Folder X's custom keyboard shortcuts put your favorite and recent folders at your fingertips. Version 5.0.2 improves both performance and compatibility on El Capitan.

Default Folder X 5.0.2 requires OS X Yosemite or El Capitan and is a free update for existing version 5 users. New licenses are $34.95, and upgrades from version 4 and prior are $14.95.

Xero launches TaxTouch for freelancers

Xero (xero.com), known for its accounting software, has launched Xero TaxTouch, a new app developed specifically for freelance workers who submit a Schedule C form with their tax filings. It provides a way to track earnings and tax liability by automatically downloading and organizing bank and credit card transactions from all major U.S. banks and credit cards.
 
Users can separate expenses by swiping right for business or left for personal. Xero TaxTouch estimates quarterly tax payments, and continually tracks take-home earnings. It also helps freelancers save money by categorizing expenses according to IRS-approved business deductions.

Xero TaxTouch is priced at $5.99/month, or $29.99 for the first year and is now available for download on iOS from the Apple App Store.

App Camp For Girls expands in 2016

App Camp For Girls, a non-profit organization aimed at correcting the gender imbalance in the software industry, is expanding this summer.

At App Camp For Girls, campers receive a broad introduction to the process of iOS app development, from brainstorming and designing ideas to building and pitching their apps. The girls use Macs and Xcode, Apple's suite of developer tools, to build their apps and run them on iPod touch devices.

An inaugural camp session will be held in Phoenix, Arizona. Camp sessions will also take place in established locations: Portland, Oregon; Seattle, Washington; and Vancouver, British Columbia. DEVONagent 3.9.4 updates plugins, filters more accurately

DEVONtechnologies has updated all editions of its Internet search and research tool DEVONagent. Available in three editions, DEVONagent is a smart internet search agent.

It queries search engines and crawls web sites. It then post-filters the results and presents the results in a multitude of ways. The new version brings updated plugins and search sets, adds contextual menu options for videos, and more. The updates are free and recommended for all users.

AKVIS MakeUp for OS X now supports Ultra HD 4K, 5K resolution

AKVIS (www.akvis.com) has announced AKVIS MakeUp 4.0, an update of tis portrait retouching software for Mac OS X (10.6 and higher).

The app cleans up the skin and removes blemishes, whitens teeth and fixes the red eye effect. Version 4.0 offers support for Ultra HD 4K and 5K resolution.

Audified rolls out second gen Audiotex inValve Effects

Audified has released its second-generation Audiffex inValve Effects, a plug-in suite simulating valve processing hardware with modeling of analogue circuitry and valve characteristics as part of its Hybrid Valve Series.

It’s a software simulation of UK audio product manufacturer TL Audio’s VL-1 valve interface, an eight- channel rack-mountable “rose-tinted” affair designed for use with the eight-track digital recorders of the time. BatchOutput for Microsoft Excel update improves Workbook PDF...

Zevrix Solutions has announced BatchOutput XLS 2.3.6, a maintenance update to its output automation solution for Microsoft Excel on Mac OS.

In addition to batch printing and PDF conversion, the software lets users carry out automated professional PDF production directly from Excel and repurpose Excel spreadsheets for web and mobile devices. Court overturns Apple’s jury victory against Samsung

A U.S. appeals court has overturned a $120 million jury verdict against Samsung, reports Reuters (http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSL2N16510E). The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C., said Samsung didn’t infringe Apple's "quick links" patent, and that two other patents covering the iPhone's slide-to-unlock and auto-correct features were invalid. 

The court also said Apple was liable for infringing one of Samsung's patents. Apple's "quick links" patent, as the main focus in Samsung's latest effort to overturn major court victories by the Cupertino, California-based company over the past two years. Apple: the FBI asking us to ‘weaken’ the security of all our...

Apple's general counsel says complying with the FBI’s order to break into an iPhone connected to the San Bernardino, California,, massacre will "weaken the security" of its devices.

The comments are part of an opening statement from Bruce Sewell, Apple's senior vice president and general counsel, who will testify before the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, reports USA Today (http://tinyurl.com/gnxbk25). In the statement, the lawyer defended Apple's cooperation with the FBI in the San Bernardino investigation, noting the company made engineers available to advise them on "additional investigative options.”

However, Sewell said, ”The FBI is asking Apple to weaken the security of our products. Hackers and cyber criminals could use this to wreak havoc on our privacy and personal safety. It would set a dangerous precedent for government intrusion on the privacy and safety of its citizens."
