LiveCode 8 adds new plug-in architecture

LiveCode Ltd has unveiled LiveCode 8 (www.livecode.com) , representing the next generation of the highly coding environment for iOS, Android, Mac OS X, Windows, Linux and Server platforms. Rewritten from the ground up, LiveCode 8 brings a new plug-in architecture allowing users to drag-drop widgets.

LiveCode Ltd’s recent acquisition of mergEXT means that LiveCode now also ships with 29 readymade iOS add ons. Many of these will be developed into widgets by LiveCode Ltd and made available across all supported LiveCode platforms. CoreCode teams releases TableEdit spreadsheet for Mac OS X

The CoreCode team has announced TableEdit, a spreadsheet app for Mac OS X. It offers features such as charts with cell styling, formatting options, and comprehensive import/export capabilities.

TableEdit features a “world-class” Excel-compatible formula system that has been tested on more than a million formulae from over 20,000 Excel-files, according to Samuel Vimes of the CoreCode team. The tool is built exclusively for OS X and takes full advantage of its latest features and technologies, he adds.

Micromat’s MacCheck is new problem-solving and diagnostic utility

Micromat, the company behind the TechTool Pro line of software, has released a new troubleshooting utility called MacCheck. The new product can perform a series of critical tests on Mac systems running OS X 10.6 or higher, helping to isolate what might be wrong with a particular computer.

MacCheck is being offered free of charge and is available for download immediately (https://www.micromat.com/products/maccheck). The program tests many of the critical systems in a Mac, including RAM, I/O, Volume Structures, Partition Maps, Batteries, RAID systems and more. ADATA launches line of certified accessories for Apple devices

ADATA Technology has launched its Apple Series in North America. The accessories are designed specifically for iOS and OS X devices, including the iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Mac.

Retrospect: 52% of small businesses have suffered data loss

A new survey sponsored by Retrospect (www.retrospect.com), makes of Retrospect Backup & Recovery software, finds that more than half of small businesses have suffered data loss, through accident, loss, failure, theft, or disaster. The survey was conducted with Google Consumer Surveys across a sample of 1,000 small businesses.
 
The survey respondents reported accidents to be the most common form of data loss at 36%. Behind that, they reported loss at 21%, theft at 15%, disaster at 7%, and other at 6%. Under “Other,” respondents included "drive failure,”manufacturer erasing the hard drive during a warranty repair” and "employees doing things they shouldn’t.” And with the ability to select more than one form of data loss, 2% reported that they were unlucky enough to suffer from all four types.

MailButler for OS X Mail gets Follow-Up feature

MailButler (https://www.feingeist.io/mailbutler), the Apple Mail assistant by Feingeist Software GmbH, has added a new feature on its list.

It's called Follow-Up, and it allows users to schedule a follow-up reminder that will notify them when there is no response to a particular email. Apple’s CareKit tool arrives along with four new apps

Apple has launched its third medical framework, CareKit. Four apps are now available at the Apple App Store.

CareKit is a tool for assisting people in taking an active role in their care. iPhone apps using it make it easier for individuals to keep track of care plans and monitor symptoms and medication; providing insights that help people better understand their own health, says Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer, Initiatives.

With the ability to share information with doctors, nurses or family members, CareKit apps help people take a more active role in their health, he adds. CareKit has been released as an open source framework, allowing the developer community to continue building on the first four modules designed by Apple.
