Best Buy testing smaller, Apple retail-ish stores

Best Buy is testing a new turnaround strategy: "making its cavernous electronics emporiums look more like Apple Inc.'s sleek retail outlets," reports "The Wall Street Journal" (http://macte.ch/ggTnB).

The heart of a test store near Best Buy's headquarters in Richfield, Minnesota, is a Solution Central help desk, that strongly resembles the Genius Bar at Apple's stores, the article adds. Best Buy's prototype lets customers pay for products in several locations, rather than forcing them into checkout lines at the front of the store, another idea taken from Apple retails stores.

Apple, Samsung narrow patent claims as trial looms

On Tuesday Apple and Samsung filed a join statement dropping additional claims against each other as an U.s. trial looms. The narrowing had been requested by Judge Lucy Koh of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

The parties' joint statement is not necessarily the last word on narrowing., notes "FOSS Patents" (http://macte.ch/dxsJ5). Everything depends now on Judge Koh's assessment of the trial-readiness of this case, the article adds.

Apple and Samsung have filed more than 30 lawsuits against each other across four continents. For example, Apple alleges that Samsung copied the slide-to-unlock technology of its iPhone and iPad devices.

Makers of ultra-thin devices still can't compete with Apple

Notebook vendors are still unable to compete effectively against Apple, according to a "DigiTimes" (http://macte.ch/2dCY9). Senior analyst Joanne Chien says that Aple's ultra-thin MacBook series products (such as the MacBook Air) accounted for 50% of global notebook shipments that feature an ultra-thin design in the second quarter.

MacBook Air shipments in the fourth quarter are still expected to surpass the combined shipments of the non-Apple notebook brand vendors' ultrabook and ultra-like notebook products, she adds. Toshiba and Hewlett-Packard's (HP) weak shipments in June caused global top-six brand vendors to only achieve on-month growth of 2% combined, Chien says. However, she adds that the top-three notebook original device manufacturers are expected to have achieve 21% on-month growth in June shipments after experiencing a weak April and May.

Asymco: Apple whittling down Microsoft lead

According to an Asymco report (http://macte.ch/dsmhh), Apple has whittled down the Windows-to-Mac OS ratio "dramatically" in the past several years -- and that ratio is even more impressive when figuring in OS X plus iOS devices. According to Asymco:

° The ratio of Windows PCs to Macs in 1995 was 15:1.

° By 2004 the ratio had dropped to 7:1, thanks to the growing popularity of laptops -- and the MacBook.

° Currently, if you figure in both OS X and iOS devices, the ratio is about 2:1.

° "Considering the near future, it’s safe to expect a “parity” of iOS+OS X vs. Windows within one or two years," says Asymco. "The install base may remain larger for some time longer but the sales rate of alternatives will swamp it in due course."

U.K. court says HTC didn't infringe on Apple photo...

A High Court in the U.K. has ruled that HTC didn't infringe on Apple's photo management patent, while stating that three other patents Apple claimed in the lawsuit were invalid, reports the IDG News Service (http://macte.ch/HoeAv).

The three patents declared invalid, include Apple's "slide to unlock" feature, which Apple alleged HTC had infringed on in its smartphones and tablets. A multi-touch software that Apple had claimed certain HTC devices using Android 2.3 had infringed on was also found not to be patentable, with the judge declaring it to be computer program, according to the IDG News Service.

In 2010, Apple filed a lawsuit against HTC for infringing on 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone's user interface, underlying architecture and hardware. The lawsuit was filed concurrently with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and in U.S. District Court in Delaware.

Cable to account for 25% of fixed broadband subscribers by 2017

Cable digitization efforts in developing economies will be a key driver for cable broadband penetration worldwide, giving service providers access to more lucrative markets with service revenues reaching the US$50 billion mark in 2017, reports ABI Research (http://www.abiresearch.com).

Cable technology’s adoption of DOCSIS 3.0, with higher maximum speeds than DSL, has been a key competitive strength against Telco’s offering only DSL service in the United States, Canada and parts of Western Europe, says the research group.

"Cable MSOs’ marketing focusing on use of advanced services, such as video streaming, and number of devices in the home has encouraged consumers to upgrade to higher bandwidth tiers," says Adarsh Krishnan, senior analyst, TV & video at ABI Research.

Looking to next generation bandwidth-hogging services, including 3DTV and 4K video resolutions, technology providers...
