Reliance on mobile phone replacements key to continued growth

After only 4% growth in 2009, the mobile phone display market is set to grow by 14% in 2010, with shipments forecast to reach 1.68B units, according to the latest DisplaySearch Quarterly Mobile Phone Shipment and Forecast Report (http://www.displaysearch.com).

In the first quarter of 2010 (Q1’10), mobile phone display shipments fell 9% Q/Q due to seasonality, but increased 34% year-over-year, reaching 370.5 million units.

"With an average worldwide market penetration of mobile phones at 70%, manufacturers are eager to introduce new features, applications and user interface improvements, such as touch screens, to ensure continued growth for this segment this year," says Calvin Hsieh, research director at DisplaySearch. "The migration of various display panel technologies and increasing average display sizes reflects these trends."

EA Mobile says the fan-favorite Madden NFL videogame franchise is available on the iPad for the first time, as well as the iPhone and iPod touch. It costs US$12.99.

Toon Boom Animation has released Flipboom Lite, a free app for creating animations on your iPad. It lets you use your fingertips to doodle, scribble or draw a sequence of images and see them move.

iPresentee releases premium iWeb themes

iPresentee (http://www.ipresentee.com) has announced iWeb Themes 9.0 designed specifically for Apple's web site building component of its iLife suite.

The new release extends iPresentee's iWeb themes collection up to 80 themes designed for personal and business usage. Each iWeb theme can be customized.

Scosche releases car chargers for the iPad

Scosche Industries (http://www.scosche.com) has released the US$24.99 reVIVE II Dual USB Car and Home Chargers for the iPad. They allow you to charge two devices at once.

According to the Pew Research Center adults between 18 and 29 own four gadgets on average and those between 30 and 64 average just under three, making the need for a dual USB charger even more important. The two reVIVE II models feature both a 2.1 Amp (iPad) and 1 Amp (iPhone or any other USB powered devices) port so iPad users can power  their new iPad and another handheld device simultaneously when at home or on the go.

DMG Master for Mac OS X updated to version 2.3.1

Tension Software (http://pomola.com) has updated DMG Master software to create standard Disk Image Archive "Add files" dialog panel and sports an improved "Remove file" handling and interface.

DMG Master costs US$20, though version 2.3.1 is a free update for registered users of version 2.0. It's Universal Binary, so runs natively on both PowerPC and Intel Macs. DMG Master requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

FontAgent Pro gets speed boost

Insider Software (http://www.insidersoftware.com) has updated FontAgent Pro to version 4.140. It offers a speed boost, beefing up precision font selection and auto-activation.

FontAgent Pro auto-activation plug-ins can be used on machines running Mac OS X 10.3.9 through 10.6 -- as well as Classic applications. The latest plug-ins provide auto-activation for Adobe Creative Suite 5 using FontSavant technology that ensures you always auto-activate the right fonts in your documents.

All FontAgent Pro auto-activation plug-ins offer Universal Binary support so run natively on both PowerPC and Intel Macs. Version 4 of FontAgent Pro is required to use the new CS5 plug-ins to ensure correct font activation.

ARES Commander Edition is new 2D/3D CAD solution

Graebert GmbH (http://www.graebert.com) has released ARES Commander Edition 1.0, a new solution for 2D and 3D CAD that runs on Mac OS X, Windows and Linux systems. It offers full native cross-platform support on all three operating systems.

Also, mobile support is planned for support for Windows Mobile and, possibly, the iPad and Android. It's available at an introductory price of US$495 through the end of September, a 50% discount from the regular price of $995.

ARES uses a common design interface and is purportedly the first CAD solution to run natively across Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. It's been optimized for specific operating system features and capabilities.

Adobe posts Lightroom 3.2, Camera Raw 6.2 release candidates

Adobe has announced the Lightroom 3.2 and Camera Raw 6.2 Release Candidates, available for immediate download on Adobe Labs.

The updates extend raw file support to 12 new camera models, improve on several of the lens correction profiles introduced as part of the Lightroom 3 and Camera Raw 6.1 releases, and add over 50 new lens profiles to help photographers automatically correct for undesirable distortion and aberration effects. In addition, the Lightroom 3.2 Release Candidate now allows Lightroom 3 customers the ability to publish their photos directly to Facebook from within the application, and addresses issues reported by customers on the Lightroom 3.0 release.
