Murdoch: iPads cannibalize newspaper sales

James Murdoch, head of News Corp's operations in Europe and Asia, says sales of newspaper apps for devices like the iPad are cannibalizing sales of physical newspapers, reports "Reuters" (

Grand Theft Auto trilogy drives onto the Mac

Rockstar Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software and TransGaming have brought the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy to the Mac. The trilogy revisits the entries of the series and includes Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

The Grand Theft Auto Trilogy is available via TransGaming’s Mac gaming portal ( for 30 days, with additional retailers to follow across North America and Europe. Each game costs US$14.99.

SOHO Labels 5 adds new templates, artwork

Chronos ( has released SOHO Labels 4, an upgrade to its label, envelope, and letterhead software for Mac OS X 10.5.8 and later. It adds new "smart" templates and a collection of artawork.

Also new is: Cover Flow for previewing kits in a dedicated window; a Font Preview mode for previewing fonts in a list or animated fashion; a Trim To Label feature to hide objects outside the canvas for a quick preview; named placeholders, automatic images, and more; regular text placeholders and text + image placeholders. Simple Help Editor beefs up ability to reuse content

The PandaWare Company has updated Simple Help Editor, its cross-platform help authoring application, to version 4.1.2. Mac and Windows users can use Simple Help Editor to create software help systems that display in Apple Help Viewer, Windows' HTML Help viewer, a Web browser, or in a proprietary help window (for applications created with Real Software's REALbasic).

Version 4.1.2 enhances Simple Help Editor's capabilities for reusing content. A key feature, Placeholders, has been expanded to allow replacement of text virtually anywhere text can be entered, making it easier to reuse help content for different products or different versions. Oracle, Apple announce OpenJDK Project for Mac OS X

Oracle and Apple have announced the OpenJDK project for Mac OX X. Apple will contribute most of the key components, tools and technology required for a Java SE 7 implementation on Mac OS X, including a 32-bit and 64-bit HotSpot-based Java virtual machine, class libraries, a networking stack and the foundation for a new graphical client.

“We are excited to welcome Apple as a significant contributor in the growing OpenJDK community,” says Hasan Rizvi, Oracle’s senior vice president of Development. “The availability of Java on Mac OS X plays a key role in the cross-platform promise of the Java platform. The Java developer community can rest assured that the leading edge Java environment will continue to be available on Mac OS X in the future. AMD Fusion chips coming to the Mac?

During AMD's Financial Analyst day, the "GigaOM" ( and "Fudzilla" ( sites picked up on a PowerPoint slide that AMD's senior vice president and chief of sales officer, Emilio Ghilardi, displayed but didn't discuss. The slide featured two iMacs and a Mac Prowith the AMD Fusion logo below them.

If this slide is any indication, Apple could be on the verge of using AMD processors in its desktops, says "PC Mag" (,2817,2372484,00.asp). This week AMD this week demonstrated the company's first APU, which stands for Accelerated Processing Unit, based on its Fusion technology.

Study: Verizon iPhone will substantially grow iOS market share

In a new report from ABI Research (, global smartphone shipments to mobile business customers are forecast to grow at a CAGR [compound average growth rate] of 15%. The research group says Apple should do well, especially if a Verizon iPhone does appear.

The mobile business customer smartphone installed base will exceed 30% worldwide; in North America, it will exceed 65%.  But behind these numbers will be a hyper-competitive marketplace defined by the operating system.

According to enterprise practice director Dan Shey, “With the iPhone and now Android, business customers simply have more choices. While each region will have a different set of competitive dynamics, within a few years regional installed base market shares of 50%+ will be a thing of the past.”

Apple has released The Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.4 and Security Update 2010-007.

The Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.4 ( extends RAW image format compatibility to Aperture 3 and iPhoto ’09 for the new cameras. It's a 6MB download and requires Mac OS X 10.5.8 or higher.

Security Update 2010-007 brings the same security patches included in the recent Mac OS X 10.6.5 release to Macs running 10.5 (client or server versions). You can obtain it via the Software Update component of Mac OS X's Systems Preferences app.
