Photo Slideshow for Mac OS X gets better iPhoto support

iFunia Studio has released Photo Slideshow 2.2.0, an update of the Mac tool for combining digital pictures, and music into home movies and DVD slideshows complete with captions and transitional effects, and sharing via YouTube, on mobile devices, or on the big screen with a DVD. New features in this version include better support for loading iPhoto resources, totally redesigned App icon, and enhanced program stability.

Washing Machine for Mac OS X updated with improved scan speed

Intego, a provider of security products and performance utilities built exclusively for Mac users, has released version 10.8.2 of Washing Machine 2014 for Mac OS X.  The new release has been updated to improve scan speed by ignoring Time Machine backups. It also includes an enhanced scanning user interface.

Washing Machine 2014 seeks out and removes large, unneeded files, frees up hard disk space, speeds up the operating system, organizes the dock and desktop, and lets users create Smart Folders for quick access to frequently used files.

IGG Software rings up iBank 5.1

 IGG Software has released iBank 5.1, an upgrade to its money management program for Mac OS X 10.8 or higher. The app provides improved bank connectivity, enhanced reports, better bill pay, and superior transaction management among scores of new features and fixes.

iBank 5.1 is available from the IGG online store (www.iggsoftware.com) for US$59.99 for new users. It's a free upgrade for users of version 5.0.
For optional, automatic updating of transactions, users of iBank 5.1 have the opportunity to try Direct Access for free during a 30-day trial.

Miraizon releases DNxHD and ProRes Codec Components for QuickTime

Miraizon has released DNxHD and ProRes Codec components for QuickTime. The DNxHD (VC-3) and ProRes codecs have both enjoyed increasing popularity among video editors.

Unfortunately, support for the two codecs is uneven across computer platorms and editing systems, making it often difficult for editors to collaborate and exchange files. This patchy support situation also poses problems for archiving projects if an organization decides to switch editing platforms or computer systems.

With Miraizon's DNxHD and ProRes compatible codec components, video editors can select the best codec for the job while maintaining their preferred editing system and computer platform. Registration now open for MacAdmins Conference

"Early bird" registration is now open for the 2014 MacAdmins Conference. It's an East Coast conference for anyone who deploys and manages Macs and iOS devices.

Early bird registration pricing is the same as last year. It's US$400 for the conference only (July 9-11) or $550 for the conference and a pre-conference workshop (July 8-11).

This year's conference will be home to over 50 sessions on Mac and iOS administration topics, five new pre-conference workshops, and three evening events. Contour Design rolls out the RollerMouse

Contour Design has introduced the RollerMouse, which uses the company’s proprietary 7SENSES tracking technology and a Phillips twin-eye laser sensor inside the polished aluminum rollerbar to provide "a perfect internal environment to interpret cursor movement."

The rollerbar glides effortlessly and precisely over a frictionless bearing surface with pinpoint accuracy, according to the folks at Contour Designs. SecuritySpy for Mac OS X adds support for more cameras

Bensoftware has announced SecuritySpy 3.3, an update to the multi-camera video surveillance software for the Mac.

SecuritySpy sports features such as motion detection, real-time compression of multiple camera feeds, and network video and audio streaming. New features in this version include support for BlackMagic video hardware, the latest Apple FaceTime cameras, and several new network cameras.

Apple's Peter Oppenheimer to retire at the end of September

Apple has announced that Peter Oppenheimer (pictured), Apple’s senior vice president and chief financial officer, will retire at the end of September. Luca Maestri, Apple’s vice president of finance and corporate controller, will succeed him as CFO reporting to CEO Tim Cook. Oppenheimer will transition the CFO role to Maestri in June and the balance of his responsibilities over the remaining time.

"Peter has served as our CFO for the past decade as Apple’s annual revenue grew from $8 billion to $171 billion and our global footprint expanded dramatically. His guidance, leadership and expertise have been instrumental to Apple’s success, not only as our CFO but also in many areas beyond finance, as he frequently took on additional activities to assist across the company. SCSC releases Scannerz 1.7 for the Mac

Software and Computer System Company has rolled out Scannerz Version 1.7 for Mac OS X. The tool employs hard drive analysis algorithms to repair and maintain your hard drives.

Version 1.7 includes a Diagnostics Mode, which can automatically detect and analyze drive and system problems. It can catch data corruption caused by bad cables and faulty interface circuitry, catch system bus and memory problems and more.

Whetstone releases redesign of DayMap for Mac and iPhone

Whetstone Apps has released DayMap 1.8 for Mac and 1.4 for iPhone. Both versions sport an updated user interface. DayMap is an app for organizing and scheduling projects and tasks with a Project Outliner and Weekly or Monthly Scheduler.

RemObjects C# brings native C# to iOS and Mac OS X

RemObjects Software has introduced RemObjects C#, a new compiler and development tool chain that brings the C# programming languages to native iOS, Mac and Android software development.

RemObjects C# works directly with the frameworks that are native to each platform, creating 100% native Cocoa applications for iOS and OS X, or creating pure Java/Dalvik apps for Android. Developers can use their existing language skills to write applications for all major development platforms.

Briefcase for Mac integrates SharePoint into the Finder

Colligo, which specializes in enterprise SharePoint collaboration, has launched Colligo Briefcase for Mac, which integrates SharePoint into the Finder. SharePoint is enterprise collaboration software from Microsoft.

"The Colligo Briefcase product suite extends capabilities offered by Microsoft’s OneDrive for Business (formerly SkyDrive Pro) solution by including support for a broad range of platforms — including Mac, iOS and Windows — allowing connectivity to both on-premise and cloud-based SharePoint, and providing advanced ECM features such as email management and metadata," says Trevor Dyck, director, Product Management, Colligo. Alchaemy has introduced customization options for the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air lines. The company says it doesn't paint your Apple laptop, but anodizes it the way Apple does so it has the same finish.

There are various customization choices. For example, Alchaemy can customize your MacBook Pro with Retina display in 15 color options — plus tweak a 27-inch Apple Thunderbolt Display to match.

Free QuarkXPress 10 update boosts performance

Quark Software has announced QuarkXPress 10.1, an update to QuarkXPress 10 that's free to all version 10 users. The upgrade adds HTML5 animation capabilities to App Studio layouts within QuarkXPress and provides version 10 support for Quark Publishing Platform.

QuarkXPress 10.1 also provides 8,000% zooming and dynamic guides. The latter automatically appear when items that are created, moved or resized align with other items on the page. Dynamic guides also show when items have the same width and height as other elements on the page or when several items have the same distance to other items to help evenly distribute elements.

Apple drives out CarPlay for using an iPhone in the car

Apple has announced that leading auto manufacturers are rolling out CarPlay, the "smarter, safer and more fun way" to use iPhone in the car. It gives iPhone users a way to make calls, use Maps, listen to music and access messages with just a word or a touch.

Users can control CarPlay from the car’s native interface or just push-and-hold the voice control button on the steering wheel to activate Siri without distraction. Vehicles from Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo will premiere CarPlay to their drivers this week, while additional auto manufacturers bringing CarPlay to their drivers down the road include BMW Group, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Company, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota Motor Corp.

TS Calc for Mac OS X gets improved layout, more

Tension Software (http://www.tensionsoftware.com) has updated TS Calc, a Mac OS X document-based application for solving mathematical models, to version 1.3. The upgrade sports an improved layout, a window info panel for any view, and more.

A TS Calc document contains a series of equations and a list of variables and constants used by the equations. When the document is set up, the user can insert the input value and see the output generated by the TS Calc document using the equations to solve the problem.

German court tosses IPCom's patent lawsuit against Apple

A German court has thrown out two patent lawsuits against Apple by non-practicing IP licensing firm IPCom, one of which sought US$2.2 billion in damages over alleged infringement of a wireless patent, reports "FOSS Patents" (http://tinyurl.com/nnclgfu).

Early this month IPCom accused Apple of using a patent for technology that gives emergency calls priority on mobile networks. The company says the patent is essential to the implementation of 3G mobile standards, and a narrowed version of the patent was upheld by the European Patent Office (EPO) last month following challenges from Apple, Nokia, HTC, Ericsson and Vodafone.

Native Instruments has released Marble Rims, a new Maschine Expansion offering producers the "laid-back, sun-kissed flavor of classic and contemporary SoCal hip hop." It delivers exclusive recordings from West Coast artists and producers.

Producers can choose from a palette of 40 sampled instruments ranging from SoCal staples such as analog basses and leads, electric pianos, and layered percussion, to live sampled guitar licks, one-shots and beat sequences. Benchmark keyboard instruments and synths such as the Fender Rhodes Mark 1, Hammond B3 Organ, a Minimoog Model D, and more were all sampled, then equalized using vintage EQs.

Beltone releases iPhone compatible hearing aid

Beltone First has hit the market. It's a hearing aid capable of streaming  stereo sound from an iPhone, iPad and iPod touch without the need for an additional pendant-like device.
