No 1080p Apple TV this year?
Apple is having "moderate success" with the Apple TV, Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo told clients in a note -- as reported by "MacRumors" (http://www.macrumors.com). The company shipped approximately 480,000 Apple TV units during the second quarter, the analyst said. That represents more than 70% year-over-year growth as Apple transitioned from the larger hard-drive based first-generation Apple TV to the iOS-powered second-generation streaming device. However, Kuo's industry sources claim that Apple isn't planning a hardware update for the Apple TV during the current quarter. If true, many will be disappointed. Since Apple considers Blu-ray a "bag of hurt" and evidently will never offer Blu-ray support on its Macs, a 1080p Apple TV would be welcomed by movie buffs. -- Dennis Sellers

iPhone shipments increase 141.8% year-over-year
A iPhone shipment increase of 141.8% year-over-year gave Apple a growth rate more than 12 times that of the global mobile phone market in the second quarter, leaving the company poised to overtake LG as the No. 3 handset maker in the world, according to the IDC research group -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com). IDC says the worldwide mobile phone market grew 11.3% year-over-year. Without taking Apple into account, the global market grew just 7.8%. Apple's shipments of 20.3 million were enough to give it a 5.6% share of the market, up from 2.6% a year ago, notes IDC. The iPhone maker maintained the fourth-place spot that it achieved last quarter, "while climbing within striking distance of third-place LG, whose shipments fell 18.9 percent to 24.8 million," says "AppleInsider."

Power and Associates study (http://www.jdpower.com/). Now in its ninth year, the semiannual study provides a detailed report card on how well wireless carriers provide service to their customers via three contact methods: telephone calls with customer service representatives (CSR) and/or automated response systems (ARS); visits to a retail wireless store; and on the web. Within each contact method, the study measures satisfaction and processing issues, such as problem-resolution efficiency and hold-time duration. Among customers who sign a contract for wireless service, overall customer care performance averages 761 on a 1,000-point scale -- 23 index points higher than the average satisfaction among non-contract subscribers (738). "The TotalMount system allows people to discreetly mount Apple TV behind wall-mounted televisions, which helps preserve a clean and uncluttered appearance of one's walls." The patent-pending TotalMount system includes three ways to mount an Apple TV.  In the first mounting option, the Apple device slides into TotalMount, which then securely attaches to the vents behind the television using proprietary hooks.  Alternatively, TotalMount connects Apple TV to the wall mounting bracket that...

Analyst: Apple victory in patent wars would be worth US$30...
In a note to clients -- as reported by "CNN Money" (http://macte.ch/DWCy8) -- Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi says an Apple victory in the patent wars with HTC and others could be worth US$30 billion. He writes: "Should Apple prevail in forcing Android to rework some of its functionality, resulting in market share shifts, it could have huge, positive financial implications for Apple: we note that a 10 percentage point shift in smartphone market share from Android to Apple (the current run-rate smartphone market share is 46% for Android vs. 18% for Apple) in 2013 is worth an estimated $30B+ in annual revenue and $10+ in annual EPS to Apple." Sacconaghi says Apple appears to have the strong upper hand in its legal battle with HTC, but "we see the current rulings as only a warm up bout. A second Apple suit against HTC -- as well as separate suits against key Android vendors Samsung and Motorola -- involves its iOS multi-touch patents, which we believe are the key pieces of IP that...

Other leading manufacturers include HTC, whose Android phones represents 14% of the smartphone market and whose Windows Mobile/WP7 devices account for 6% of the market; and Motorola, whose Android devices are owned by 11% of smartphone consumers. The company behind Ultimate Electronics, a bankrupt chain of consumer electronics, has lodged a complaint against Apple, seeking a payment of at least US$420,104 in return for financial transfers, reports "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com). Ultimate Electronics filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January. Now Ultimate Acquisition Partners, the group behind the retailer, has filed suit against Apple in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the District of Delaware. Ultimate Acquisition Partners and its chapter 7 bankruptcy trustee, Alfred T. Giuliano, believe they are entitled to more than US$420,000 from Apple, notes "AppleInsider." The suit bases that claim on what are known as "preferential transfers." A preferential transfer -- also referred to as a "preference" -- is a transfer made prior to a bankruptcy filing to a creditor by a debtor to the exclusion or detriment of its other creditors. Under Section 547 of the Bankruptcy Code, a trustee in bankruptcy...

Affinity Labs sues Apple (again) for patent violations
Another day, another lawsuit. Affinity Labs (http://afflabstx.com/), a patent holder that last sued Apple in 2009 has targeted the company this time accusing the company of violating two patents related to media playback, reports "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com). Two years ago Affinity Labs-- which describes itself as an "innovation company" that generates new product and business ideas -- sued Apple, accusing them of violating three patents related to streaming and downloading of content. The lawsuit said the technology Apple uses to transfer voice mails and music streaming is a violation of patent law. This week, the company says Apple has violated two more patents involving a content delivery system and method and a method for managing media. Affinity Labs seeks damages from the court, as well as applicable attorneys' fees, notes "AppleInsider." The lawsuit was filed on Tuesday. -- Dennis Sellers

Research group: iPad to remain atop tablet market until 2016
Android tablets won't outsell the iPad until 2016, according to the Informa research group -- as reported by "Reg Hardware" (http://macte.ch/XYBbe). Informa's forecast for tablet sales in 2015 has Apple shipping 90 million tablets, just ahead of combined sales from Motorola, Samsung, Acer, Asus, Toshiba and others of 87 million units. By the following year, Android unit shipments will have surpassed Apple's, but that will still leave Apple the dominant tablet hardware manufacturer, notes Informa.

Apple eyeing solar-powered products?
Apple and Samsung have been evaluating the possible niche market for solar-powered consumer products and considering the inclusion of Taiwan-based solar firms in their respective supply chains, according to "DigiTimes" (http://macte.ch/22Vhs). However, these niche markets will need a longer time to develop, the article says, quoting Taiwan-based solar firms. "Samsung's solar-powered netbook adopts a unique sized solar cell, added industry sources, and the number of solar cells used is less than rooftop solar systems, hence it is unlikely for solar-powered consumer products to form a solid market in the short term," says "DigiTimes."

Passware Kit Forensic 11 is Lion ready
Passware (http://www.lostpassword.com/) -- a provider of password recovery, decryption, and electronic evidence discovery software for computer forensics, law enforcement organizations, government agencies and private investigators -- says its Passware Kit Forensic 11, a new version of its flagship product,– recovers Mac OS X user log-in passwords from computer memory in a matter of minutes. As Apple's operating system has increased in popularity in recent years, so have security threats for users, says Passware President Dmitry Sumin.
