'Consumer Electronics' offers top tech marketing...
Despite the consumer electronics industry's much-publicized successes, its last ten years have been marked by some remarkable failures, according to "Consumer Electronics Daily" (http://www.consumerelectronicsdaily.com/). A whole range of products and innovations, such as HD-DVD, DVD-Audio and the Super Audio CD, left a lasting impression not for transforming society, but for barely leaving the gate, the publication says in a four-article retrospective to mark its 10th anniversary. The rocky launch of 3D TV has many wondering if it will join the long list of heavily hyped failures, the publication says. The report details how Warner’s decision in 2008 to exclusively support Sony’s competing Blu-ray format dealt HD DVD a fatal body blow. DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD, two formats launched with the promise of huge mass-market adoption, earned the support only of a small cohort of audiophiles. More recently, the report says, 3D TV’s shaky launch leaves its future uncertain. Consumer...

iHS: iPhone 4S packs 'a wealth of innovation'
On the outside, the iPhone 4S may have disappointed some with its perceived lack of new features. But on the inside, the latest member of the iPhone line includes "a wealth of innovation," including a new wireless module with a unique custom module from Avago Technologies and the first use of a Hynix Semiconductor NAND flash memory in an iPhone according to a new "IHS iSuppli Teardown Analysis" (http://www.ihs.com) from information and analysis provider IHS. The baseline iPhone 4S model with 16GB of NAND flash memory carries a bill of materials (BOM) of $188. When the additional $8 manufacturing cost is added in, the total increases to $196. The other iPhone 4S models are identical to the baseline version, with the exception of the addition of more NAND flash. This gives the mid range, 32GB model a BOM of $207, and the high-end 64GB version a BOM of $245. iHS says that these teardown assessments are preliminary in nature, and account only for hardware costs and don't include other...

Media tablets eclipse netbook sales
Media tablet shipments surpassed netbook shipments this quarter, reaching 13.6 million units, compared to just 7.3 million netbooks. Netbooks had previously led the way with 8.4 million shipments in the first quarter of 2011 (1Q11), compared to just 6.4 million media tablets, according to new data from ABI Research (http://www.abiresearch.com). "This is a trend that we do not expect will reverse," says Jeff Orr, group director, mobile devices. "As they are different segments, this is not a direct replacement behavior, but a changing of leadership for the most interesting device type." Driving media tablet interest is Apple’s iPad 2. Sixty-eight percent of the media tablet shipments in 2Q11 consisted of iPad models. Consumers are choosing tablets over netbooks for a number of reasons. "Media tablets are perceived to be easy to use, compared to the keyboard and mouse interface of a netbook computer," says Orr. "Those who have avoided PCs because they are difficult to use -- think the...

Apple-Samsung court hearing delayed in France
Samsung’s court bid in France to halt sales of the Phone 4S handset was delayed after a judge requested more documents, reports "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/cBs5F). Judge Marie-Christine Courboulay said she needed more information concerning an accord between Samsung and Qualcomm. She scheduled another hearing for Nov. 15. Last week Samsung filed motions with courts in Paris and Milan seeking the ban, each citing two patent infringements on wireless telecommunications technology. The company has also filed four lawsuits against Apple in the Netherlands. Samsung is claiming the iPhone and iPad that use 3G technology infringe Samsung patents. Meanwhile, Apple in September said in a Hague court hearing that Samsung is holding them "hostage" by asking for 2.4% on each 3G chip used in the iPad and iPhone. Samsung is deliberately misusing both the royalty rate and the responsibility for its payment to try and oppose its lawsuit, says Apple. -- Dennis Sellers

Fantastical upgrade beefs up editing, deleting features
Flexibits has updated Fantastical -- a flexible calendar application for the Mac that lets you create, view, and search their events -- to version 1.1. The upgrade allows users to edit and delete events directly from Fantastical. Additionally, notes support is now included, letting users add notes to their events. Notes can be included when creating new events or added to existing events. Using a natural language engine, Fantastical is "expressive," allowing users enter event text in their own style. For example, enter a sentence such as "Lunch with John at 123 Main Street on Tuesday" and Fantastical will translate the sentence into an event and add it to their calendar. Users can use the event list and calendar to locate and plan all of their events. Color-coding helps make quick sense of a user's schedule. Even the number of events displayed can be changed so the user can focus on a specific range of events, says Michael Simmons, co-founder of Flexibits. Full CalDAV support is...

WD suspends operations in Thailand after flooding
Western Digital (http://www.westerndigital.com) has extended the suspension of its operations in Thailand. Over the weekend, rising water penetrated the Bang Pa-in Industrial Park flood defenses, inundating the company's manufacturing facilities there and submerging some equipment. At the other company manufacturing location in Thailand, Navanakorn Industrial Park, the park flood defenses were breached on Monday morning local time and water has begun to flow into the park threatening the company's facilities there. All WD employees in Thailand remain safe, the company says. The company's other facilities in Malaysia, Singapore and the U.S. are fully operational. WD now expects that the flooding of its Thailand facilities, combined with flood damage to the company's supply chain in Thailand, will have significant impact on the company's overall operations and its ability to meet customer demand for its products in the December quarter.

AMD names former Apple exec as chief technology officer
AMD (http://www.amd.com) says Mark Papermaster, 50, has joined as the company’s senior vice president and chief technology officer.  He will report to president and CEO Rory Read and will oversee all of AMD’s engineering, research and development (R&D), and product development functions as the head of the newly-formed Technology and Engineering Group.  In August 2010, Papermaster, the Apple executive in charge of hardware for the iPhone, left the company following the "antennagate" brouhaha over the iPhone 4 although that wasn't officially the reason for his departure. Apple confirmed Papermaster’s departure, but would not say whether he was ousted or left of his own accord. Papermaster, who was most recently vice president of Silicon Engineering at Cisco, will be responsible for establishing and executing the company’s technology and product roadmaps, integrated hardware and software development, and overseeing the creation of all of AMD’s products. The advanced research and...

Macs see record desktop sales during latest fiscal quarter
During a conference call with analyst discussing Apple's latest financial results, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the Mac was going stronger than ever. Approximately 4.89 million Macs were sold during the quarter. That beats the previous record by about 750,000. Apple also saw record desktop sales, thanks mostly to the iMac. The MacBook Air also fueled growth, along with the MacBook Pro. Cook said that response to Mac OS X 10.7 ("Lion") has been tremendous with over six million downloads in the quarter. The Mac is, as usual, outgrowing the computer industry as a whole. By more than six times, per the latest data from the IDC research group, Cook says. -- Dennis Sellers
