Mac sales grow 66% in the enterprise arena
In a note to clients -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) -- Needham & Company analyst Charlie Wolf says Mac sales in the enterprise during Apple's last fiscal quarter grew 66%, significantly outpacing the rest of the PC market, which grew just 4.5% in the enterprise. He said though he originally viewed success in the enterprise as a "one-quarter blip," it now appears to be a "durable platform" for Apple. Wolf says the trend is particularly interesting because between 2007 and 2009, Mac sales in the enterprise stagnated even as the platform was taking off with consumers. The trend has only reversed over the past four quarters. Wolf says Mac sales are now estimated to be 3% of total computer business sales, which is the highest total Apple has seen since the second quarter of 1997.

Apple: 'App Store' isn't generic
Apple is continuing to fight its corner over the use of the term 'App Store' and is still arguing that it is not a generic term, reports "The Inquirer" (http://macte.ch/7SmSl). "Apple denies that, based on their common meaning, the words 'app store' together denote a store for apps," said the company in a recent filing in a California federal court. Apple sued Amazon over its use of the term back in March, having already sent it three cease and desist letters. Last month Amazon has responded in court to Apple's trademark infringement lawsuit over the use of the term "App Store," which Amazon has contended is generic and should be free to use. Amazon's response was filed in a U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California. The company says it doesn't need to obtain a license or authorization from Apple to use the term "app store." "No such license or authorization is required because 'app store' is a generic term, and Amazon's use of the term causes no likelihood of...

Apple, three record labels reach deals on cloud music service
Apple has reached agreements with three major record labels -- including Sony, it seems -- to let users of its new music service access their song collections from handheld devices via the Internet, reports "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/bRzEX), quoting "people with knowledge." The new iTunes offering will let users store content on Apple’s servers and access it using the Web, rather than loading songs into a device’s memory, said the people. The plans could be previewed as early as Apple’s developers conference, set to begin June 6, reports "Bloomberg." If so, Apple would follow Google and Amazon.com in letting consumers stream music from the so-called cloud instead of downloading it to a hard drive. Unlike competing products, Apple’s cloud music service won’t require users to upload online collections, two people told "Bloomberg." Apple's service will reporotedly be dubbed "iCloud."

Link found between Mac, Windows version of scamware
Microsoft says it's found evidence of a link between the fake security software now plaguing Mac users and a family of similar software on Windows, reports "Computerworld" (http://macte.ch/8yGII). Earlier this month researchers announced the discovery of a Mac-specific scam that claims the machine is heavily infected. Once installed, the software nags users with pop-ups and fake alerts until cave and pay a fee to purchase the worthless program, notes "Computeworld." To get rid of the program's alerts -- and the occasional pornographic page that pops up in the browser, a new twist intended to make victims think their computers have been hijacked -- many Mac owners pay the $79.50 "registration fee" for the scamware, the article adds. The bogus program is apparently the first security software scam on the Mac. Engineers who work for the Microsoft Malware Protection Center (MMPC) told "Computerworld" that users who visit a Web page posing as a free online virus scanner get served either...

Apple trademarks Thunderbolt
Well, it seems that it's Apple, not Intel, that has trademarked "Thunderbolt." It's been previously reported that the technology was developed by Intel with collaboration from Apple. Perhaps that collaboration was greater than anyone suspected. "MacNN" (http://macte.ch/2oMcG) says Apple is "making claims to the Thunderbolt trademark in the U.S. and Canada, based on an earlier filing last November in Jamaica." Thunderbolt is a new high-speed computer connection technology that brings together high-speed data transfer and high-definition (HD) display on to a single cable. And it's already appearing on Macs -- in the revamped 2011 MacBook Pro and iMac lines. Apple sold 16.9 million iPhones to end users worldwide, more than doubling its sales of iPhones year-on-year. This market-beating growth came from all regions: the iPhone is now available in 90 countries from 186 communication service providers (CSPs). “This strong performance helped Apple consolidate its position as the fourth largest brand in the mobile communication market overall,” says Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner. “Considering the higher than average price of the iPhone this is a remarkable result and highlights the impact that a strong...

Free FreeHand files antitrust lawsuit against Adobe
Another day, another lawsuit. Free FreeHand (http://www.freefreehand.org), an organization dedicated to the late, lamented (by many) vector drawing application, is suing Adobe for "killing" FreeHand. FreeHand was made by Macromedia, which Adobe purchased in 2003. In time Adobe phased out FreeHand as well as Macromedia's GoLive web site creation tool in favor of its own (and competing) Illustrator and Dreamweaver products. Here's the goal of the Free FreeHand Organization: "We want FreeHand to have a future. Not only because we love to work with it, but also because we have thousands of files from the past we may need access to on any given occasion (well, they open in AI, but are converted into chaos). Our wish is a simple one: For those who still use FreeHand today (and don't want to use Illustrator, possible reasons for which are myriad) the application must be brought up to date and maintained, i.e. known bugs fixed and made to work natively on current operating systems. We don't...

Kilroy played down suggestions that ARM processors could eventually unseat the world's top chipmaker in personal computers.
