Analyst gives reasons why Apple shares will hit $1,000

In a note to clients -- as noted by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) -- Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster tells why he thinks Apple shares will hit US$1.000 in the next couple of years. Among those reasons:

° Continued innovation in the company's 2012 product roadmap;

° A blowout next-generation iPhone launch;

° An Apple television arriving in 2013 (the rumored "iTV");;

° Little change to carrier subsidies for the next two to three years;

° Sustained gross margins above 40% and the China opportunity.

° Meaningful updates to the Mac line.

Regarding the latter, Munster thinks Mac updates should arrive within the next six weeks with enhanced Retina Displays and Intel's Ivy Bridge chips. Since it's Apple's "first meaningful Mac update in over a year," the analyst expects the refresh to "reaccelerate" Mac sales.

SSDs won't replace hard drives anytime soon

Solid state drives are one of the hot technologies of the day. However, "hotness" and "the cloud" aside, look for hard drives to maintain their importance for months to come. No, make that years to come.

Maximum areal densities in hard disk drives (HDD) are expected to more than double during the five-year period from 2011 to 2016, spurring continued growth for HDDs in storage-intensive applications such as video and audio systems, according to the iHS iSuppli (http://www.isuppli.com) research group.

HDD areal densities measuring data-storage capacities are projected to climb to a maximum 1,800 Gigabits (Gb) per square inch per platter by 2016, up from 744 Gb per square inch in 2011. This means that from 2011 to 2016, the five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for HDD areal densities will be equivalent to 19%. For this year, HDD areal densities are estimated to reach 780 Gb per square inch per...

Apple eyes ways to improve speakers on portable devices

Apple is working on ways to improve its speakers, especially on its small, mobile devices such as the iPhone. An Apple patent (number 20120128190) for a gas filled speaker volume has appeared at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.

Per the patent, a speaker enclosure includes a gas cavity and an air cavity separated by a flexible membrane. A diaphragm is located roughly in an opening of the enclosure surrounding the gas cavity and attached to the enclosure by an outer suspension member. The enclosure, the flexible membrane, the diaphragm, and the outer suspension member are gas and air impermeable. The enclosure surrounding the air cavity has a vent hole to allow air to travel into and out of the air cavity for barometric pressure equalization of the gas cavity.

Here's Apple's background and summary of the invention: "n most speaker systems, a vibrating diaphragm is mounted at an opening of a speaker enclosure. A common type of speaker enclosure is a sealed...

An Apple patent (number 2012013147) for a resolution independent user interface design has appeared at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. It relates generally to graphical user interface design and more particularly to a means for specifying a graphical user interface object in a procedural and largely display resolution independent manner.

Per the patent, graphical user interface material map objects are specified by a collection of attribute-value pairs, the collection of which comprises a complete description of the material map and may be used by a rendering engine to create a visual representation of the material map at any resolution.

That is, material map representations in accordance with the invention are resolution independent. Another benefit of representing material maps in accordance with the invention is that they may be encrypted to prevent unauthorized inspection or use.

Apple patent involves 3D effects on the OS X desktop

Apple has applied for two patents at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office involving windows in Mac OS X. They involve 3D-ish effects on the desktop.

Patent number 20120131496 is for methods, systems and computer-readable media for managing open windows in a desktop graphical user interface (GUI) are disclosed. In various implementations, open windows displayed within a 2D desktop plane can be organized into one or more 3D browsable stacks in a 3D desktop space, where each stack includes open windows associated with a common value for a grouping property. A graphical representation indicating the respective value of the grouping property associated with each 3D browsable stack can be displayed in proximity to the 3D browsable stack.

As the user browses through the open windows in the browsable stack, one window is displayed in a frontal view at a time while the other windows are displayed in a side view. When the user selects an open window from the stack, the 3D...

Mountain Lion: why I'm looking forward to AirPlay on OS...

I expect Mountain Lion, the next major rev of Mac OS X, to be prowling by the end of July (hopefully even sooner and on some Retina display MacBooks Pros and iMacs). One of the features I'm most looking forward to is AirPlay.

AirPlay is, currently, a feature for streaming music, video and photos wirelessly from iPad, iPhone and iPod touch to the Apple TV. The wireless technology is being integrated into speaker docks, AV receivers, and stereo systems from companies such as Bowers & Wilkins and Denon.

With Mountain Lion, AirPlay will come to the Mac, at last, allowing users to wirelessly mirror the screen of their Macs onto their televisions using an Apple TV.  There are several advantages to this.

I've ripped my entire collection of (legally purchased) DVDs to an external hard drive attached to my Mac, so I can watch a film any time without having to go get the DVD. Once Mountain Lion arrives I can start watching a "ripped" movie on my Mac, then move to...

Greg's Bite: why should Apple buy Sprint?

By Greg Mills

For the better part of a year now, I have been advocating that Sprint is prime takeover bait for the likes of Apple. The landscape in the smartphone -- or, for that matter, the mobile computing business, including tablets -- is evolving very quickly and Apple has to "think different" to stay on top.

Vertical development in the mobile computing market must include an Apple Mobile business segment, in some form, for Apple to stay the leader of the industry. A number of other tech writers and industry analysts have recently come out confirming buying Sprint has merit. You have to know Apple has people thinking about such acquisitions.

Tony Fadell, formerly the head of the iPod division at Apple, came up with a scenario, a couple of years ago, where Apple could buy unused bandwidth from the various cellular providers, repackage those minutes for sale to consumers and managed the "virtual network" over the Internet. The Apple server...

OLED, 3D and iTVs

In a recent blog (http://macte.ch/5I7Yx), NPD DisplaySearch Analyst Paul Gray asks, “Will OLED Revitalize the TV Industry?” It dives into the question of whether OLED is the solution to the woes of the industry. It also begs the question of whether Apple might one day release an OLED "iTV" -- assuming, of course, that Apple has any plans to release its own HDTV at all.

An OLED TV screen uses a new display technology called OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes). Proponents say that OLED televisions are brighter, more efficient, thinner and feature better refresh rates and contrast than either LCD or Plasma. However, Gray raises some topical points, such as while OLED has the potential to offer images with high contrast and superb colors in a very thin package, much of this can already be done with LCD technology.

In addition, he points on that the industry may do well to learn its lesson from the 3D TV...

AirFloat removed from the App Store

Airfoil Speakers Touch is not the only audio app to be removed from the App Store. Apple also removed AirFloat, the developer said on his blog. Like Airfoil Speakers Touch, AirFloat allowed people to send audio to the iPhone from a desktop machine. Cult of Mac said on Thursday that this might be because these apps could be duplicating features that are coming in iOS 6, which is what we thought as well -- however Rogue Amoeba pointed out that the timing makes little sense since there is no iOS 6 announcement yet.

There's no word as to if these apps will make a return to the store, but the situation doesn't look good for either of them....

Daily iPad App: League of Evil 2 proves platformers...

There are a lot of awesome games on sale in the Because We May event going on this weekend, but of the titles I've picked up so far, League of Evil 2 is probably my favorite. It's a platformer title, in the vein of Super Meat Boy, in that it's basically a quick and simple romp through a series of quick levels. But while a lot of platformers don't work all that well on the iPad's touchscreen, League of Evil 2 works great. The virtual buttons are not only big and easy to hit, but they're very responsive, and great character and animation designs make it easy to move around the level quickly in very precise ways.

Each level is pretty quick to get through, but there are hidden briefcases to find in each one, and you're also timed as you go, with a max three star rating to earn. There are over 100 levels to play, and with the game on sale for just 99 cents,...

Nuance announces Dragon Drive, Siri-like...

If you can't get enough of Siri's dulcet tones, then you'll be happy to hear that Nuance -- one of the companies behind Apple's intelligent assistant -- has announced a similar type of functionality that should be coming to cars soon. Dragon Drive replicates the power of Siri so that drivers can initiate a conversation to perform common tasks rather than take their hands off the wheel.

Expected sometime this summer, Dragon Drive lets drivers send text messages, check traffic information, play music, or get directions by just asking. A button on the steering wheel activates the voice recognition so that other discussions in the car don't set off a search. Dragon Drive then uses onboard software to do part of the voice recognition rather than relying solely on remote servers like Siri.

Like Siri, Dragon Drive...

Orange Exec: Android, Windows Phone and iPhones Are...

For most of the past few years, Yves Maitre has lead the effort to ensure its Orange cell phone customers in places like Britain and France have the right selection of phones.

And when it comes to the company’s major markets in Western Europe, Maitre said things are in pretty good shape. Windows Phone, Android and iOS have paved the way for a solid set of options for both high-end devices and even midrange ones, often sold prepaid and, in some cases, under the Orange brand name.
But when it comes to serving the next 6 billion potential smartphone customers, Maitre said that none of the major operating systems is really lightweight enough from both a cost perspective or from the amount of bandwidth consumed.
In an interview Thursday, Maitre likened it to when he was growing up in France and his family had a two-cylinder Citroen. He idolized the huge eight-cylinder cars coming out of Detroit in...

How an iPad Speeds Reporting from NASCAR's Pit Row

Dave Burns has been covering stock car racing from pit road for seventeen years, including spending the past twelve covering NASCAR's premiere Sprint Cup Series. These days he's a Pit Reporter for ESPN, covering Nationwide and Sprint Cup practices, qualifying, and races, all over the course of a single weekend -- every weekend -- for months at a time.

Working the pit lane means dealing with dozens of teams, drivers, mechanics, and more; all while keeping viewers informed across hours of live programming. When he started covering NASCAR for NBC in 2001, Burns developed a sophisticated note-taking system that "catered to our programming, the way my brain worked, and portability." He started with half-sized legal pads and advanced to custom-bound pads that he would print and bind at home. He has since accumulated hundreds of binders filled with information.

"I have boxes and boxes of notepads that impressed the crew chiefs and race engineers every time," Burns said....

Absinthe 2.0 Brings Untethered Jailbreak to iOS 5.1.1 Devi...

Chronic Dev Team today announced the release of Absinthe 2.0, which offers users the ability to jailbreak numerous iOS devices running iOS 5.1.1, including the third-generation iPad, without having to tether the device to a computer for booting. The jailbreaking process allows users to load third-party software and hacks not authorized by Apple onto their devices.

Absinthe 2.0 works only on iOS 5.1.1, and enables jailbreaking of all iPad models with the exception of the revised 16 GB iPad 2, although compatibility with that device is scheduled to be added in the future. On the iPhone side, Absinthe 2.0 can jailbreak all devices from the iPhone 3GS onward, while the software is also compatible with the third- and fourth-generation iPod touch models.

Absinthe 2.0 is available for...

Apple Paying Dividends to Employees with Restricted Stock...

Apple's board has decided to award dividend equivalent payments to employees holding restricted stock units or RSUs. Apple announced a quarterly dividend of $2.65/share in March, to commence in July. RSUs are typically issued to employees to encourage them to stay with the company. They are awarded in a similar way to stock options, but convert directly into shares of stock upon vesting.

Apple CEO Tim Cook was awarded 1 million RSUs upon his promotion to CEO last year to entice him to stay with the company for the foreseeable future. Half of the shares vest in 5 years, and the other half in 10. Cook has specifically declined the dividend equivalents, turning down more than $75 million in dividend payments over the life of the RSUs.

Facebook Launches New iPhone App Dedicated to Posting and...

Facebook today released a new standalone iPhone app dedicated to posting and sharing photos on the 900-million strong social network. Facebook Camera aims to make using photos on Facebook "faster and easier", according to a press release.

The app, much like the Facebook Messenger app launched last year, is designed to streamline a single Facebook feature that users are constantly interacting with, rather than using the clunkier Facebook iOS app. Photos are such a large part of Facebook that the company recently spent $1 billion to purchase photo sharing service Instagram.

Facebook built the app to make it much easier for mobile users to share multiple photos to the...

Apple's Evolution Under the Leadership of Tim Cook

Back in November, The Wall Street Journal took a look at how Tim Cook was putting his stamp on Apple just two months after officially being elevated to the position on Chief Executive Officer. But with Cook now having been on the job for nine months, Fortune examines in a lengthy profile how the company and its culture have continued to evolve under his leadership.A 14-year veteran of the company, Cook is maintaining, by words and actions, most of Apple's unique corporate culture. But shifts of behavior and tone are absolutely apparent; some of them affect the core of Apple's critical product-development process. In general, Apple has become slightly more open and considerably more corporate. In some cases Cook is taking action that Apple sorely needed and employees badly wanted. It's almost as if he is working his way...

Microsoft Office for iOS and Android Arriving in November?

BGR reports that Microsoft is planning to launch Office for iOS in November this year, with the source claiming first-hand knowledge of the software running on an iPad. With the app's splash screen referring to it as "Office for iOS", the source also speculates that the app may also be coming to the smaller screens of the iPhone and iPod touch. In addition to its iOS effort, Microsoft is also said to be bringing Office to Android-based tablets in the same timeframe.

Microsoft had indicated soon after the launch of the original iPad that it was investigating the possibility of bringing Office to the platform, but ultimately stated that it had no plans for such an effort. The Daily has since claimed several times that Office for iPad is in fact in the works, reporting in February that...

The Palo Alto Online has unearthed plans for a new glass-enclosed retail store going in near the current Stanford mini-store at the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, CA.

This is a similar design to the new store being built in Portland, OR, as well as a new store in Aix-en-Provence, France. What makes this store unique, however, is the interior.

The default YouTube app in iOS was great back in 2007, but it hasn't seen a significant update in years and is lacking many features compared to the newer mobile YouTube website that Google launched two years ago.

This will make all YouTube links open the mobile website and will also hide the native YouTube app on the device. If you decide you want to revert these changes, simply go to the Restrictions settings and toggle YouTube back on.

Adjust your startup chime volume

Controlling the volume of the startup chime is easy to set in the System Preferences Sound panel, but you need to make two different settings if you have external speakers connected to your Mac. There is no need to use scripts or any other coding to make this adjustment.

There are both internal and external speaker output settings in the sound preference pane. In order to adjust (or turn off) the volume of your Mac's internal speakers, nothing must be plugged into the headphone jack. Keep in mind that this setting completely controls the volume of your internal Mac speakers, so if you mute the sound, and have no external speakers, you will get no sound at all from your Mac.

To adjust the volume on your Mac's internal speakers:

  1. Unplug speakers or headphones from the headphone jack.
  2. Go to System Prefs > Sound, then click on the Output tab.
  3. You will then see Internal Speakers (Type built-in) highlighted in the window.

Change hidden iTunes preferences

There are plenty of hints on this site that use the defaults command to change preferences or settings that are unavailable via the GUI. These are fine to use for isolated changes, but there are some applications where you might want to change a number of settings.

iTunes is one of these. Over the years, Apple has removed a number of options from iTunes; at least from its menus and preferences. Many of these options remain, but are hidden.

Doug Adams' free Change Hidden iTunes Preferences is an applet that lets you change a number of settings. I use it to make sure that when I rip CDs, track numbers are added to the file names; to hide Ping buttons; and to hide the arrow buttons that display next to tracks. Other options it offers are the ability to turn on half-stars for ratings (useful for smart playlists), showing the "Libary" playlist at the top level of the iTunes so ...
