Light Peak equipped Macs possible for 2011
The rumor mill says that the first computers using LightPeak will arrive in the first half of 2011. And Apple might be one of the first manufacturers to include it in its Mac models, says "CNET" (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-20021658-64.html). Developed by Intel, the Light Peak technology paves the way for a new generation of extreme computer input and output (I/O) performance, delivering 10Gb/s of bandwidth, with the potential ability to scale to 100Gb/second over the next decade, according to David Perlmutter, executive vice president and general manager, Intel Architecture Group. At 10Gb/second, a user could purportedly transfer a full-length Blu-Ray movie in less than 30 seconds. Intel says it intends to work with the industry to determine the best way to make this new technology a standard. The optical technology allows for smaller connectors and longer, thinner, and more flexible cables than currently possible. Light Peak also has the ability to run multiple protocols...

IDC: iPhone now number two smartphone globally
The worldwide smartphone market reached a new milestone during the third quarter of 2010 (3Q10), with the leading vendors posting double- or even triple-digit year-over-year growth. According to the International Data Corporation (http://www.idc.com) "Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker,"vendors shipped a total of 81.1 million units, up 89.5% from the 42.8 million units shipped during 3Q09. Apple marked a new milestone in iPhone shipments, enough to take the number 2 ranking worldwide. The third quarter is typically Apple's highest volume quarter, and 3Q10 was no exception. Consumers who did not get their iPhone 4 at the end of June were rewarded for their patience and even the much-hyped "Antennagate" did little to dampen demand, as the company moved swiftly to provide solutions, says IDC. For the first three quarters of 2010, vendors have shipped a total of 200.6 million units, up 67.6% from the 119.6 million units shipped during the first three quarters of 2009. "That the...

New variant of Boonana Trojan Horse in the wild
The SecureMac team (http://www.securemac.com) says a new variant of the Boonana malware has been discovered. The new variant, trojan.osx.boonana.b, behaves in a very similar manner to the original malware, and is currently being distributed on multiple sites. SecureMac has identified two more web sites that are currently hosting the new malware variant. Rather than the initial site which tricks users into running (and installing) the malware, these servers seem to be hosting update code for the malware. The infected machines contact these servers looking for updates to the malware payload. At the time of analysis (Nov. 2), these servers were live and distributing malware, says SecureMac. In addition to the malware updates, these servers contain what appear to be keystroke logs from infected machines, including usernames and passwords. With a quick glance, Boonana may look like a variant of Koobface, which was discovered for Windows back in 2008. However, ESET has also confirmed...

Gartner to CEOs: seize the iPad opportunity
The iPad and its ecosystem are likely to disrupt existing technology use profiles and business models, and CEOs should ensure that its potential is being seriously evaluated inside their organizations, according to a new report from Gartner Inc (http://www.gartner.com). “It is not usually the role of the CEO to get directly involved in specific technology device decisions, but Apple's iPad is an exception,” says Stephen Prentice, Gartner Fellow and vice president. “It is more than just the latest consumer gadget; and CEOs and business leaders should initiate a dialogue with their CIOs about if they have not already done so.” The research grouop forecasts worldwide media tablet sales to end users to reach 19.5 million units in 2010, driven by sales of the iPad. Media tablets are poised for strong growth with worldwide end user sales projected to total 54.8 million units in 2011, up 181 percent from 2010, and surpass 208 million units in 2014. Lawsuit claims Apple intentionally 'iBricked' iPhone...
Another day, another lawsuit. To boost sales of the iPhone 4, Apple told owners of its third-generation iPhone to download an operating system that the company knew would turn the 3G phones into a "device with little more use than that of a paper weight," unhappy customers say in a Superior Court class action, as reported by the "Courthouse News Service" (http://www.courthousenews.com/2010/11/03/31573.htm). Lead plaintiff Bianca Wofford says Apple told owners of its 3G and 3GS iPhones that the new iOS4 operating system was an upgrade. But she says the "upgrade" made her phone slow and susceptible to crashes, turning an iPhone into an "iBrick," says "Courthouse News Service." "In essence, Apple knowingly and intentionally released what it called a system software 'upgrade' that, in fact, made hundreds of thousands of third generation iPhones that were exclusively tethered to AT&T data plans 'useless' for their intended purpose," according to the complaint.

Apple named most innovative company
The 2010 Global Innovation 1000 (http://www.booz.com/global/home/what_we_think/featured_content/innovatio...), the sixth annual study of corporate innovation spending, released today by global management consulting firm Booz & Company, names Apple as the most innovative company. Apple leads the list, capturing 79% of the vote. It's followed by Google with 49% and 3m with 20%. The three companies "can innovate successfully without breaking the bank," says Booz & Company. "Apple is an exceptional example of our observation that success in innovation is determined not by how much money you spend, but rather by how you spend it," the report says. "The company has a long history of bringing innovative and stylish products to market, from the first Apple computer in 1976 to the iPod, the iPhone, and the iPad today. Yet it invests just 3.1% of its revenues in R&D, less than half the average percentage of the computing and electronics industry. Apple’s financial performance has...
