ATTO launches Fibre Channel SAN upgrade kits

ATTO Technology has announced the availability of a range of Fibre Channel SAN Kits providing all the components needed to update existing direct-attached storage to a high-performance, low-latency storage area network.

Apple updates firmware for its 802.11n AirPort Base Stations

Apple has released firmware 7.6.7 for all of its 802.11n AirPort Base Stations. This includes the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and AirPort Time Capsule.

According to Apple's release notes, it improves stability and performance for its AirPort Base Stations. It also fixes an issue which may prevent communication between clients.

Apple has also released firmware 7.7.7 for the 802.11ac AirPort Extreme, and AirPort Time Capsule. The updates can be applied by using the AirPort Utility app on iOS or OS X.

Virtual TimeClock for OS X ticks to version 16

Redcort Software (www.redcort.com) has rolled out Virtual TimeClock 16, an update to the timecard management app for Mac OS X.

The utility records the exact time as it occurs, removing any guessing or estimating of arrivals, departures, breaks and lunches. Version 16 helps companies eliminate unwanted overtime and reduce labor costs by ensuring that worker start, stop, and meal break times are properly observed, according to the folks at Redcort.

Output Factory for InDesign adds variable file name options

Zevrix Solutions has announced Output Factory 1.5.54, a feature update to its output automation solution for Adobe InDesign.

Output Factory automates printing, exporting and  preflighting from InDesign. The software offers batch processing, export as single pages, layer versioning and much more. The new version adds an option to ignore hidden layers when using the script label feature which lets users insert contents of selected text frames in InDesign document into variable output file names.

QuarkXPress 2016 offers Built-in HTML5 Publishing

Quark has released QuarkXPress 2016 (http://tinyurl.com/zj38wvk) the new version of the graphic design and page layout software. Among many new features, QuarkXPress 2016 brings designers the ability to create HTML5 publications within QuarkXPress that can be previewed locally and displayed on all modern desktop, tablet, and mobile browsers.

Parallels Access adds support for the iPad Pro

The latest version of Parallel Access adds a much-requested feature: support for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Parallels Access provides a way to control your desktop applications from a tablet or smartphone.

The new version (3.1) of Parallels Access still has the three resolution choices for
your mobile device: Best for your Device, More Space, and Same as Computer. However, now those choices make use of the full resolution of the iPad Pro.

Apple has released new beta versions of OS X, iOS, and tvOS. They are, respectively, OS X 10.11.6, iOS 9.3.3., and tvOS 9.2.2.

Tension Software updates Mac Restart to version 2.0

Tension Software (www.tensionsoftware.com) has revved Mac Restart to version 2.0. The app is used for “soft” and “hard” restarts.

A soft restart is issued at the Finder level and quits all running apps before restarting the Mac. A hard restart is issued at the system level and offers a low level of probability of having the restart interrupted by an app refusing to quit.

Mac Restart 2.0 can be used as a status menu only app that’s always available from the menu. It also uses the latest Apple XPC technology to provide admin right actions.

FXpansion introduces Geist2 beat production system

FXpansion has launched Geist2 (http://tinyurl.com/jsakrgb), an update of its $199 sound-sculpting and beat production system with streamlined sample manipulation, arrangement, and modulation capabilities for intuitive and accelerated workflow.

It’s available for Mac OS X (10.9 or higher) and Windows (7 SP1 or higher), as 64-bit only AAX, 32- and 64-bit AU and VST — and as standalone versions. Geist2 is a step-sequencer and sample-based drum machine realized in software. It offers a way to build beats. Grooves and rhythms can be performed and programmed faster in version 2.

For slicing longer loops, the refined Slicer in the upgrade combined with up to 64 pads allows for fast, non-destructive chopping of beats with automatic pattern extraction. This makes it quicker to create custom loops. Existing Geist owners can upgrade to Geist2 for $99.

Apple previews new Union Square store in San Francisco

Apple has revealed its new store on San Francisco’s Union Square, offering many new features and services rolling out to Apple retail stores worldwide. The new store will open its signature 42-foot tall sliding glass doors to customers on Saturday, May 21 at 10 a.m. 

“Fifteen years ago today Apple opened its first two stores and we’re thrilled to mark the occasion with the opening of Apple Union Square in San Francisco,” said Angela Ahrendts, Apple’s senior vice president of Retail and Online Stores. “We are not just evolving our store design, but its purpose and greater role in the community as we educate and entertain visitors and serve our network of local entrepreneurs."

MACSpoof 1.0 designed to help change MAC address to network...

Tension Software (www.tensionsoftware.com) has released Mac MACSpoof, a Mac utility that allows the user to change the MAC address of the network interfaces of your Mac (Ethernet, Wi-Fi and so on) with any custom value.

The $4.99 utility displays a list of all the network interfaces of a Mac. By selecting one, the user is able to assign the value from one created at the moment or using a list of pre-defined values reusable over time.

Adobe Launches Spark visual storytelling apps

Adobe has served up Adobe Spark, an integrated web and mobile solution for creating and sharing visual stories. The free service — part of Creative Cloud — lets you create visual content that engages audiences across multiple channels and looks great on any device, says Bryan Lamkin, executive vice president and general manager, Digital Media at Adobe.

Apple opens development office in Hyderabad, India

Apple has announced the opening of a new office in Hyderabad, India, that will focus on development of Maps for the Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. This investment will accelerate Maps development and create up to 4,000 jobs.

“Apple is focused on making the best products and services in the world and we are thrilled to open this new office in Hyderabad which will focus on Maps development,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. “The talent here in the local area is incredible and we are looking forward to expanding our relationships and introducing more universities and partners to our platforms as we scale our operations.”

Apple has been continually updating and adding new features to Maps, including 3D views, the Flyover feature and tools to help customers find places to shop, eat and explore nearby areas. Emojis for Apple Mail now available on MailButler

Feingeist Software has updated MailButler (https://www.feingeist.io/mailbutler), its personal assistant add-on for Apple Mail on the Mac.

With its various functions, it simplifies, optimizes and streamlines working with emails. Now users can include emojis into their emails. This can be done with just one click: the emojis button has been added right into the utility bar in the email window.

MailButler requires Mac OS X Yosemite or El Capitan. You can test MailButler as long as you want with the free plan for one user and a limited amount of use per month. Youtubers Life comes out on Steam for the Mac

U-Play Online has announced Youtubers Life, a mixture of two genres, life sim and tycoon. It’s launching simultaneously for the Mac and Windows on Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/428690/).

The game is in “early access” (think beta). During this period, the game will just include the option of recording videos based on gaming —it reportedly takes more than 10 hours to finish the game— but four extra vertical channels will be added in the near future: music, fitness, cuisine and fashion.

Apple announces new iOS App Design and Development Accelerator

Apple has announced a new initiative to support engineering talent and accelerate growth in India’s iOS developer community.

The company will establish a Design and Development Accelerator in Bengaluru, the home of India’s startup scene. Tens of thousands of developers in India make apps for iOS, and this initiative will provide additional, specialized support for them, says Apple CEO Tim Cook. Apple’s team will work to inspire and instruct developers on best practices, help them hone their skills and transform the design, quality and performance of their apps on the iOS platform, he adds.

Each week, Apple experts will lead briefings and provide one-on-one app reviews for developers. The facility will also provide support and guidance on Swift, Apple’s programming language created to build apps for iOS, Mac OS X, tvOS, and watchOS.
