ChangeWave: iPhone 4S more popular than its predecessor
A new ChangeWave Research (http://www.changewaveresearch.com) survey of iPhone 4S owners shows customer satisfaction ratings for the latest Apple smart phone are higher than for its predecessor, the iPhone 4. The Nov. 2-9 ChangeWave survey of 215 Apple iPhone 4S owners looked at their thoughts and opinions of the new device -- including overall satisfaction with it, key likes and dislikes, dropped calls, and the impact of the iPhone 4S battery life issue. Overall iPhone 4S customer satisfaction ratings show a high degree of approval -- with 77% of owners saying they're "Very Satisfied" and 19% "Somewhat Satisfied" with their new iPhone. Only 2% of owners say they are "Unsatisfied" with it. These iPhone 4S satisfaction ratings are higher than those found in a July 2010 survey of iPhone 4 new owners. ChangeWave asked iPhone 4S owners about the specific features they like best about their new smart phone, and by a wide margin the Siri digital assistant (49%) ranks number one. General...

State looking into Apple's Grand Central store deal
New York state officials are looking into Apple’s "sweet deal" for a new store in Grand Central Terminal in the Big Apple, according to "The New York Post" (http://macte.ch/YUaPf). State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli has reportedly launched an investigation into whether the Metropolitan Transportation Authority gave Apple overly generous terms on its lease for the shop, which is slated to open next week. The probe comes in response to yesterday’s exclusive report by "The Post," which noted that the cash-rich tech giant will be the only retailer among the 100 or so in MTA’s Grand Central Terminal not required to make revenue-sharing payments to the agency landlord. What’s more, Apple’s 10-year lease for a space on the northeast balcony of the historic commuter hub overlooking the Main Concourse is well below the rate being charged to many neighboring tenants, according to "The Post." Apple's lease amounts to approximately US$800,000 for the first year.

UPDATED Carrier IQ, RIM, Nokia and Android Keystroke Root Kit
Posted by Greg Mills The location data scandal of last summer has just been eclipsed, by everyone but Apple, with a revelation that virtually all Android, RIM and Nokia phones report every keystroke you make to a server farm in Mountain View, California. As privacy issues go, recoding your location and reporting it to Apple is bad enough, but a root kit keystroke recording and reporting system hidden deep in the OS of virtually all Android Phones, RIMBerries and Nokia phones is far worse. Even more outragious, the keystroke logger runs even when the device is in WiFi mode and not even using the network! Check out www.CarrierIQ.com and you will find a web site for a mobile network analytical company that has been looking over the shoulder of millions of cell phone users. Undetected and undisclosed by AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and other networks, the Carrier IQ software is so well hidden in the root kit of the mobile OS that it took an expert to find it. The culprits...

Analyst offers concrete predictions for Apple HDTV
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster offered some concrete predictions at the Business Insider IGNITION: Future of Media Conference as to what the rumored Apple HDTV will be like. Here are the highlights: ° The Apple HDTV, which will arrive in time for the 2013 holiday season, will be a full-fledged television, not a set-top box like the current Apple TV. ° The Apple HDTV will come in a range of prices, but they'll cost about twice what similarly sized TVs from other manufacturers cost. ° The Apple HDTV will offer seamless integration with your other Apple devices and service. The TV will come with a standard remote, but you'll also be able to control it with your iPhone or iPad or via Siri.  You'll also be able to download console and other games, content, etc., from iTunes, the App Store, and iCloud. ° You'll still have to have a cable subscription and cable box because Apple doesn't have enough content otherwise.  Read more at http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-tv-details-gene-...

HP CEO: Apple will become market leader in personal computers
Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman expects Apple to overtake HP as the market leader in personal computers next year, when you figure in the iPad, she told "Le Figaro" (http://www.lefigaro.fr/), a French publication. "It’s possible if you integrate the tablets," she said. "We will try to be champion again in 2013. It will take time for the products that I have influence on to make it to the market." Last week Canalys (http://www.canalys.com) says it expects Apple to overtake HP to become the leading global PC vendor before the second half of 2012. Tablet computers, and particularly the iPad, have radically changed the dynamics of the PC industry over the last year, already propelling Apple into second place in the worldwide PC market in Q3 2011, according to the research group. iPad 'the bane' of computer memory makers
The iPad is "the bane of computer-memory makers, worsening the industry’s losses as consumers choose the hand-held device that uses about 75% fewer of the chips than a typical laptop," according to a "Bloomberg" report (http://macte.ch/1Xhwj). Elpida Memory, Hynix Semiconductor and other makers of dynamic random-access memory, the most common chip in computers, lost a combined $14 billion in the past three years, according to "Bloomberg" calculations. The article says that "as the faltering global economy and Thailand floods curb PC production, some DRAM manufacturers may not have enough money to mimic Samsung Electronic’s profitable diversification into specialty chips for smartphones, tablet devices and servers." Personal computer shipments were hit last quarter by the popularity of tablets like the iPad, according to the Gartner and IDC research group. The former says computer shipments climbed 3.2% to 92 million units, compared with an earlier projection for 5.1% growth.

Samsung scores patent win against Apple
Samsung is set to resume selling its Galaxy tablet computer in Australia as early as Friday, after the company won a "rare legal victory in a long-running global patent war with Apple," reports "Reuters" (http://macte.ch/U2YB6). An Australian federal court unanimously decided to lift a preliminary injunction, imposed by a lower court, on sales of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1, the article adds. However, the court granted Apple a stay on lifting the sales ban until Friday afternoon. Apple attorneys declined to comment after the ruling. However, the delay in lifting the temporary sales ban could give time for an appeal to be launched, notes "Reuters." Yesterday it was announced that Apple has filed a motion in a German court seeking to bar the German unit of Samsung Electronics from selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1N tablet in the European Union. The Duesseldorf regional court has scheduled a Dec. 22 hearing on the matter.

He predicts that Apple will continue to sell the current 16GB version of the iPad 2 at a lower price, as a new entry-level model much like the company currently does with the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. Reitzes also thinks Apple will roll out a faster iPad 2, akin to the iPhone 4S. This "iPad 2S" could include a faster processor and Siri integration, just like Apple's latest iPhone, says Reitzes. As for the iPad 3, he says to look for it around March. The third gen iPad will differentiate itself from the "iPad 2S" by featuring a high-definition Retina Display in addition to Siri integration and a faster processor, he says.

Apple has requested a preliminary injunction. The Duesseldorf regional court has scheduled a hearing on the matter on Dec. 22, a spokesman for the court told "Dow Jones Newswires" (http://macte.ch/oHy8o). The court spokesman didn't say whether Apple has also sought a preliminary injunction against the South Korean parent company. However, a person familiar with the matter told Dow Jones that the iMac/iPhone/iPad maker has done this.

Microsoft faces late-entry challenges in tablet market
Microsoft faces challenges in the tablet market due to its late entry, according to "Forrester Research" (http://www.forrester.com). While Windows 8 looks like a "promising product" for tablet computing, its release won't come until sometime next year, according to the research group. Though Microsoft's OEM [original equipment manufacturers] partners are embracing the platform, consumer interest has plummeted during the past nine months. Windows product strategists will have to overcome several disadvantages associated with being a fifth mover in the tablet market, per Forrester Research.

Apple, Graphics Properties do legal battle
Another day, another lawsuit. Or three. In a handful of newly filed patent infringement lawsuits, Apple is suing and also being sued by Graphics Properties Holdings, formerly known as Silicon Graphics Inc. Apple has filed two complaints against Graphics Properties Holdings, reports "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com). Details of Apple's patent infringement complaints, filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, remain unavailable for public viewing. Graphics Properties Holdings countered last week with its own complaint lodged against Apple in U.S. District Court in Delaware. Report: iPhone has 11% share of North American handset market
Quarter 3 shipments of handsets to North America at 48.24 million units was a 6.63% decline on the same period in 2010 but overall 2011 shipments to date for the first three-quarters of 2011 are 2.10% up on 2010 and a robust quarter 4 figure is expected that will likely see 2011 full year shipments exceed the 2010 total, according to a new research report from Signals and Systems Telecom. Apple's iPhones have gained an 11.10% share in Q3 although this was a decline on both previous 2011 quarters -- but it's still up on 2010 shipments overall. Within North America, quarter 3 has witnessed great changes with vendors as several made announcements of new products, new operating systems and new functionality in a drive to generate sales ahead of the festival quarter 4 demand, says the research group. Samsung has achieved a Q3 2011 market share of 30.15% of all shipments to North America, nearly double the market share of its nearest rival, fellow Korean LG (16.75% share). HTC has a Q3...

Research group: look for higher resolution tablets in 2012
According to the NPD DisplaySearch "Quarterly Large-Area TFT LCD Shipment Report" (http://www.displaysearch.com), two important large-area TFT LCD trends are on the horizon: higher resolution tablet panels and the emergence of low-cost direct type LED-backlit panels. The NPD DisplaySearch shipment forecast indicates that the average resolution of tablet displays will grow to more than 200 pixels per inch (ppi) in the second quarter of 2012. The first quarter of the year will be the first quarter that LED backlights (including edge and direct type) will account for more than half of total LCD TV panel shipments. In addition, low-cost direct type LED backlights will capture 5% of LCD TV panel shipments in the third quarter of 2012. "The TFT LCD industry is undergoing some extraordinary changes in regards to high resolution and LED backlights for tablet computer panels," says David Hsieh, vice president, Greater China Market, NPD DisplaySearch. "Rapid growth in multimedia usage of tablet...

Market research Asymco (http://www.asymco.com) thinksApple could sell as many as 280 million iOS devices next year. "Assuming that half the installed base upgrades every year and Apple adds devices required to reach the install base necessary (1.24b or 20% share) leads to the following unit sales projection (I’ve added 2008 through 2010 actuals and 2011 estimates based on my own current Q4 projections)," Horace Dediu writes for Asmyco. "This Approach yields an estimate of 225 million iOS devices to be sold in 2012."

Apple updates Safe Downloads List
Apple has released an update for its XProtect.plist malware definitions file which Apple calls the "safe downloads list." (This is kind of a misnomer because it's actually a list of unsafe downloads). The latest update appears to block a new version of a Trojan horse that masquerades as a Flash Player update, which Apple labels OSX.FlashBack.B. Read more, including details on ways to get the definitions update, at http://security.thejoshmeister.com/2011/11/how-to-update-apples-safe-dow... .

To serve as a bridge between a user's iPad or iPhone and personal computer, iNimated.com has introduced everDOCs (http://everdocs.com/en/index.html), its new iOS app that lets users access remote files and share them securely from their own private cloud. The free app allows users to access files away from their home or office. everDOCs combines three apps: a Remote Explorer and Document Viewer, Email Assistant, and File Sharing Service. "Considering the excellent connectivity of iOS devices, one would expect that they could use their iPad on the road to open documents and pictures stored on their computer," says Marin Bogdan, chief software architect at iNimated.com. "Surprisingly, this has been neither easy nor secure, which is why we created everDOCs." He says to help solve the problem of accessing files remotely on an iPad or iPhone, everDOCs combines three apps: ° A Remote Explorer and Document Viewer for iDevices: Documents (iWork, Microsoft Office, PDF, Pictures, etc.) stored...
