Walkman tops iPod in greatest inventions (but iPhone is number...
In 2011, it’s a museum piece -- but the vintage Sony Walkman has beaten Apple’s iPod in a T3.com poll to find the greatest tech invention of the last 50 years.   Launched in 1979, the Walkman revolutionized music listening by taking it out of the home or car for the first time -- allowing music to be enjoyed "anywhere, any time." It went on to sell more than 186 million units worldwide before the arrival of the MP3 player and the iPod changed the way we listen to music once again.   The Walkman’s cassette tapes could hold around 25 songs -- compared to the 1000s available using a single iPod today. There was no "shuffle" or "repeat," and its batteries rarely made it through the day.   But the original Walkman had some features even today’s top-of-the-range iPod doesn’t: twin headphone sockets, allowing you to enjoy music with a friend, and batteries you can replace yourself.   "The fact that over 30 years on, the original Sony Walkman is still seen as a greater invention than the iPod...

InPreflight Pro wings to version 2.9.5
Zevrix Solutions (http://www.zevrix.com) has updated InPreflight Pro -- its quality control, packaging automation and preflight reporting solution for Adobe InDesign -- to version 2.9.5. It's a maintenance update. InPreflight provides a preflight solution for service providers, printers, ad agencies, designers and publishing houses. It gathers information about document fonts, colors and links and lets users locate potential problems according to preflight presets. The software is also a packaging automation solution that allows users to preflight and package multiple documents. Among other abilities, it can collect all files into one folder, eliminating the need to collect the same links multiple times for each design. In addition, InPreflight lets users print graphic preflight reports and save them as fully searchable interactive PDF files, providing a way to analyze, archive and send reports to service providers. InPreflight Pro/Studio can be purchased from the Zevrix Solutions web...

Analyst predicts record Mac, iPad sales
In a note to investors -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) Needham Research analyst Charlie Wolf predicts that Apple will report sales of 4.63 million Macs and 12 million iPads in its September quarter. Both of those would be records for the company. Last Christmas the company sold 4.1 million Macs and 9.25 million iPads. Wolf's Mac projections are up from his previous forecast of 4.4 million. As for iPhone sales, the analyst thinks that Apple will report sales of about 17 million units. That would be a sequential decline from last quarter's record 20.34 million iPhones sold, as the analyst anticipates that subscribers will postpone purchases ahead of the anticipated iPhone 5 launch.

Lion in third place among Mac operating systems
Mac OS X 10.7 ("Lion"), has settled into third position behind Mac’s Snow Leopard and Leopard operating systems in its share among all Macs, according to Chitika Insight (http:///www.chitika.com), the research arm of online advertising network Chitika.  Insights uses Chitika’s data to monitor and report on Internet trends -- search engines, clickthrough rates, the mobile war, and more. Still, compared to the Chitika Insights report exactly two months month ago, Lion has jumped two-fold in its Mac market share. Mac OS 10.7 has settled into third position behind Mac’s Snow Leopard (10.6) and Leopard (10.5) operating systems in its share among all Macs.

Apple is the second coolest brand in Britain
Apple trailed Aston Martin, developer of iconic sports cars, as the coolest brand as rated by CoolBrands (http://www.coolbrands.uk.com/), a company that "canvasses the opinions of experts and consumers to produce a barometer of Britain’s coolest brands, people and places." Apple topped the "General Technology" division. About Apple, CoolBrands says: "Sleek, stylish design combined with powerful, groundbreaking technology make Apple’s unique products iconic must-haves around the world." Also in the top 10 cool brands were Harley Davidson, Rolex, Bang & Olufsen, Blackberry, Google, Ferrari, Nike and YouTube.

iPad captured 80% of North America tablet in second quarter
According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, the Apple iPad captured 80% share of tablet shipments in North America during the second quarter of 2011. "Apple completely dominates the North American tablet market, capturing 80% share of 7.5 million shipments during Q2 2011," says Alex Spektor, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics. "Apple remains a long way ahead of its main rivals such as Motorola, Samsung, RIM, Asus and HTC. A combination of cool branding, user-friendly hardware, entertaining services and savvy retail distribution has made Apple a formidable market leader." Neil Mawston, director at Strategy Analytics, adds: "Provided the pricing, screen size and hardware design are right, Amazon can be one of the main challengers to Apple’s dominance. Like Apple, Amazon has a strong brand, compelling content, sophisticated billing systems and widespread distribution. In effect, Amazon’s new tablet product represents a good opportunity to place an Amazon shopping cart in...

Cable operators considering 'a la carte' offerings?
Let's hope this is true: U.S. cable operators are privately working on a plan to force programmers to unbundle their networks and allow customers to subscribe to channels on an individual basis, reports "Reuters" (http://macte.ch/hSEcO). If it happens, this will be a major -- let me repeat, MAJOR -- change in how business is conducted. Cable (and satellite) companies have always opposed "a la carte" programming (paying for just the channels you want), arguing that bundled programming -- packages in other words -- were the best value for consumers. However, executives now say the change is a necessary response to shifting dynamics such as higher carriage costs and using the Web to watch programs, as well as a weak economic recovery that has forced many consumers to cancel cable television subscriptions, says "Reuters." Comcast Corp and Time Warner Cable, the two largest operators have lost 1.2 million video customers in the 12 months to June 30.

Study: 41% of mobile buyers to buy an iPhone 5
InMobi (http://www.inmobi.com), an independent mobile ad network, has announced the combined results of its monthly InMobi Mobile Insights network ad data research and a custom iPhone-focused study, "iPhone 5 and the Mobile Market." The InMobi announcement acts as a forecast to the scope and effect of the confirmed Oct. 4 iPhone announcement in North America. InMobi anticipates the North American mobile ad market to experience a significant increase in mobile media consumption based on the iPhone 5 consumer data findings. The iPhone 5 is potentially the most successful smartphone launch to date, according to the ad network. The recent InMobi consumer smartphone survey uncovers that 41% of current mobile users in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada plan to buy an iPhone 5. The study further finds that over 50% of those users will make the purchase within the first six months of the iPhone 5 launch, which could take Apple significantly ahead of its June 2011 market position, and increase its...

'iFixIt' looks at the Apple Thunderbolt Cinema Display
"iFixIt," a site that tears down new tech products so you don't have to, has torn into Apple's new Thunderbolt Cinema Display. Here's what the iFixIt'ers had to say: "We got the warm fuzzies when we found out that no proprietary tools were required to dissect Apple's colossal display. In fact, all you really need to pull the guts out of this machine are some heavy duty suction cups, Torx T6 and T10 screwdrivers, and maybe a spudger here and there. "All in all, we were struck by the Thunderbolt Display's ease of disassembly, and its 8 out of 10 repairability score reflects our admiration. But what did we find inside? Lots and lots of goodies that usually don't come standard with an LCD monitor. Although monitors usually don't cost as much as a laptop, either." The teardown can be found at http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Apple-Thunderbolt-Display-Teardown/6525/1 . Per "iFixIt," the teardown highlights include: ° Much like the iMac we tore apart earlier this year (and the iMacs before it...

Apple wants court to throw out Verizon brief supporting Samsung
Verizon, the largest U.S. wireless carrier, Verizon, asked a federal court on Sept. 23 for permission to file an amicus curiae ("friend of the court") brief in support of Samsung against Apple, and provided its proposed brief at the same time. Now Apple has asked the court to throw out the proposed brief or alternatively let Apple respond by a deadline that minimizes disruption of the process, reports "FOSS Patents." Verizon said that Apple's request for a US-wide preliminary injunction against four Samsung products (the Infuse 4G, Galaxy S 4G and Droid Charge smartphones, and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet computer), arguing that such a decision would run counter to the public interest. It "would hinder Verizon Wireless in developing and deploying its next generation high-speed LTE [fourth-generation] network, the job growth dependant on that network, and will undercut key public policy goals, including expansion of American's [sic] access to broadband networks and faster communication...

OWC announces Mercury Extreme Pro 3G solid state drive
Other World Computing (http://www.macsales.com) has added its lowest-cost- of-entry solid state drive (SSD) to its line-up. It comes in a 30GB model. The US$67.99 OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 3G SSD combines SandForce technologies and Tier 1/Grade A NAND to deliver data rates over 275MB/second in a noiseless, more reliable form factor over conventional magnetic hard disk drive, according to the folks at OWC. While the OWC Mercury Extreme 3G 30GB SSD comes with the latest SandForce firmware revision, it also includes the industry's first and only Apple/Mac-compatible firmware updater should the firmware need to be updated in the future, according to the folks at OWC. The firmware updater eliminates the need for a PC, ownership of Windows or other operating system, or the creation of a specially designated drive partition that other brand SSD updaters have required, they add.
