Time Inc., the country's largest magazine publisher, has reached a deal with Apple to make all its iPad editions free for print subscribers, "marking a break in the impasse between publishers and Apple and lending support to Time's contention that it's business-as-usual after the ouster of its chief executive," says "The Wall Street Journal" (http://macte.ch/cBkLZ). Starting today (Monday), subscribers to "Sports Illustrated," "Time" and "Fortune" magazines will be able to access the iPad editions via the apps, which will be able to authenticate them as subscribers. Apple has begun adopting the "iCloud" name within several products currently under development, "suggesting the appropriately labeled moniker is indeed the frontrunner for the company's soon-to-debut Internet cloud service, which will span beyond streaming music," reports "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com). According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics (http://www.strategyanalytics.com), global handset shipments grew 17% annually to reach 350 million units in the first quarter of 2011. Apple captured fourth place in global handset shipments, rising from sixth position a year earlier and leapfrogging rival ZTE. Samsung has broadened its patent- infringement dispute with Apple by suing the iPhone creator in the U.S. a week after making claims in Asia and Europe, reports "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/VjuWD). Argus Research analyst Jim Kelleher told clients in a note -- as reported by -- that he has increased his price target on Apple from US$375 to $415, noting that the company’s strong second quarter isn't reflected in the stock. IPhone sales have risen to record levels, propelling Apple into the top slot among global mobile phone vendors by revenue, even as iPad sales slipped on a sequential basis, as desktop Macs declined in the quarter, Kelleher noted. Brisbane could soon be home to Australia's largest Apple store after plans were submitted to the city's council, reports "The Age" (http://macte.ch/9knht). The Canalys research group (http://www.canalys.com) says the personal computer market grew 7% in the first quarter of 2011, as the pad market, led by Apple’s iPad, continued to bolster growth. Once again, Apple set the standard in the pad market, mainly at the expense of notebook and netbook shipments, as pads competed for a share of consumer IT spend, says Canalys. Unlike some research groups, it counts tablets among personal computer unit sales -- as I've long argued should be done -- which is a big boost for Apple. During the first quarter of this year, pad shipments reached 6.4 million units worldwide.
