Analyst: Intel should become iOS microprocessor foundry
Piper Jaffray semiconductor analyst Gus Richard in a note to clients -- as reported by "Barron's (http://macte.ch/Mr0bx)-- says that since “Intel has no market share in the next wave of computing,” the company should consider becoming the foundry to manufacture the custom microprocessors that Apple designs into its iPhones, iPods and iPads. Intel needs volume to fill its fabs to keep on track with the rising cost of “Moore’s Law,” the exponential increase in chip complexity, writes Richard. It can’t overcome Apple’s, and Google’s, commanding lead in smartphones, so it must strike a bargain, the analyst adds. “We believe Apple is shifting away from Samsung,” writes Richard, citing efforts by the company to get memory chips from Elpida, Toshiba, and Micron Technology (MU), and what may be a foundry arrangement with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) staring in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Intego reports 'rogue' MACDefender anti-malware...
Intego (http://www.intego.com) says it has discovered a rogue anti-malware program called MACDefender, which attacks Macs via SEO poisoning attacks. When a user clicks on a link after performing a search on a search engine such as Google, this takes them to a web site whose page contains JavaScript that automatically downloads a file. In this case, the file downloaded is a compressed ZIP archive, which, if a specific option in a web browser is checked (Open “safe” files after downloading in Safari, for example), will open. The file is decompressed, and the installer it contains launches presenting a user with a set-up installer screen. If the user continues through the installation process, and enters an administrator’s password, the software will be installed. "It is important that users not continue with any unexpected installation of this type. Intego VirusBarrier X6′s malware definitions will be updated today, and Intego will be publishing a security memo when we have more...

Apple already adopting the iCloud?
Apple has begun adopting the "iCloud" name within several products currently under development, "suggesting the appropriately labeled moniker is indeed the frontrunner for the company's soon-to-debut Internet cloud service, which will span beyond streaming music," reports "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com). Quoting "people familiar with the matter," the site says Apple is prepping beta versions of both iOS 5.0 and Mac OS X Lion ahead of its June Worldwide Developer Conference that integrate with a service dubbed "iCloud," enabling users to sync and store much of the same information they currently can with the company's existing MobileMe service, such as bookmarks, email, contacts and iCal events. However, "AppleInsider" thinks the service will go beyond music, and could be the central component of a revamped Apple's existing MobileMe service. Apple is also said to have been toying with the idea of making its enhanced MobileMe a free service that would further tie users...

Apple overtakes ZTE for fourth place in global handset shipments
According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics (http://www.strategyanalytics.com), global handset shipments grew 17% annually to reach 350 million units in the first quarter of 2011. Apple captured fourth place in global handset shipments, rising from sixth position a year earlier and leapfrogging rival ZTE. According to Strategy Analytics, Apple has 5.3% of the global handset market. It trails Nokia with 31%, Samsung with 19.7% and LG with 7%. “It was a mixed quarter for the world's major handset vendors," says Neil Mawston, director at Strategy Analytics. The worldwide mobile phone market grew 19.8% year over year in the first quarter of 2011 (1Q11) fueled by high smartphone growth, especially in emerging markets, and gains made by market challengers. Apple's results were buoyed by strong sales on Verizon Wireless and additional carrier deals; the company is now on 186 carriers operating in 90 countries. The iPhone once again sold particularly well in developed economic regions of the world, such as North America and Western Europe. Samsung sues Apple in the US
Another day, another lawsuit. Samsung has broadened its patent- infringement dispute with Apple by suing the iPhone creator in the U.S. a week after making claims in Asia and Europe, reports "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/VjuWD). Apple is infringing 10 patents related to mobile phones, Samsung said in an April 27 lawsuit in federal court in San Jose, California. The company, which sells the Galaxy smartphone and tablet, claims Apple is using Samsung’s inventions without paying, notes "Bloomberg." The lawsuit intensifies a legal dispute that began when Apple sued Samsung earlier this month, claiming the Galaxy products “slavishly” copied iPad and iPhone technology and design. Samsung, which is also a supplier of some Apple chips, retaliated last week with lawsuits in Seoul, Tokyo and Mannheim, Germany. Apple's lawsuit filed on April 15 in the U.S. claims Samsung's mobile phones and Galaxy Tab. Apple says Samsung "slavishly" copied the iPhone and iPad. "Rather than innovate and develop...

He wrote that the iPhone too had a few quarters of less-than-stellar sales before taking off globally, and that the same trajectory could await the iPad.

Tablet computers may face shortages of parts, components

Congressman wants FTC probe of iPhone/iPad tracking
A Democratic congressman isn't satisfied with Apple's explanation of why iPhones keep track of their users' locations and wants a federal probe into the Cupertino software marker's privacy practices, reports "CNET" (http://macte.ch/7lNDs). Rep. Jay Inslee of Washington said through a spokesman yesterday that a Federal Trade Commission investigation is still needed to "ensure all the questions regarding this issue, including the lack of disclosure, are answered." Inslee said he has not received a response from Apple to questions in a letter he sent last week. Inslee, who is a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, told "CNET" this is an example of why new federal laws and regulations restricting companies' data collection and use practices are necessary. Previously, in 2004, he introduced unsuccessful legislation called the E-Mail Privacy Act.

Apple cements its position among top five computer vendors
The Canalys research group (http://www.canalys.com) says the personal computer market grew 7% in the first quarter of 2011, as the pad market, led by Apple’s iPad, continued to bolster growth. Once again, Apple set the standard in the pad market, mainly at the expense of notebook and netbook shipments, as pads competed for a share of consumer IT spend, says Canalys. Unlike some research groups, it counts tablets among personal computer unit sales -- as I've long argued should be done -- which is a big boost for Apple. During the first quarter of this year, pad shipments reached 6.4 million units worldwide. Apple accounted for 74% of these shipments, while other vendors struggled to bring competitive products to market. Canalys expects that next quarter will see a significant change in the market, with products appearing from Acer, Asus, LG and RIM. Apple continued with its strategy to dominate the pad market, with the iPad or iPad 2 available in 59 markets by the end of Q1. A...

Meanwhile, Android has slipped in the rankings for the first time in nearly two years. In its quarterly “Mobile Phone Track”, NPD notes -- as reported by "mocoNews" (http://macte.ch/e4S2y) -- that Samsung has remained as the top-selling brand across the whole spectrum of mobile handsets. The company, which makes devices using Android, Windows Phone 7 and its own proprietary OS, accounted for 23% of all sales. LG took second place with 18 %. NPD notes that the addition of the iPhone to Verizon’s network has boosted Apple’s share up to 14%, giving it third position. In addition to the iPhone 4 being the best-selling single device, the iPhone 3GS was the second best seller on the single device list.

Apple planning to float out an iCloud?
"Gigaom" (http://macte.ch/iGIGY) says when (if?) Apple launches its much-rumored "cloud" music service it may be dubbed iCloud because Jobs & Company is rumored to be a likely buyer of the domain iCloud.com. Until recently, iCloud.com was a domain name and a storage-as-a-cloud service owned by Linkoping, Sweden-based desktop-as-a-service company, Xcerion. Xcerion’s iCloud service has just been rebranded to CloudMe, and the company acquired the CloudMe.com domain on April 5, 2011, says Om Malik of "Gigaom." "My source, who is familiar with the company, says that Xcerion has sold the domain to Apple for about $4.5 million," he says.

Apple too slow in responding to location tracking brouhaha?
Apple should have responded much sooner to concerns about location data stored on its iPhones, even if the company didn't have all the answers ready, marketing and crisis-management experts tell the "Associated Press" (http://macte.ch/1jSq9). The company took a week to deny that the phones track the precise location of their owners, as some users and privacy watchdogs had feared. As soon as it started selling the devices, Apple should have said how it uses, or doesn't use, location data, Joe Marconi, a DePaul University marketing professor and author of "Crisis Marketing: When Bad Things Happen to Good Companies," told the AP. "The whole problem could have been a non-problem if Apple had done some kind of disclosure of this in some kind of a privacy statement," he said. "Apple customers are fiercely loyal in a way we can say few (others) are today. With that comes a responsibility." Larry L. Smith, president of the Institute for Crisis Management, a public relations company, told the...

Modo 501 getting recoil Plug-in for rigid body dynamics
Luxology (http://www.luxology.com) has announced the availability of recoil, a new, US$199 plug-in for modo 501 that simulates dynamic rigid body interactions. Based on the open source Bullet physics engine, which is used extensively within the games and film industries, recoil simulates dynamic forces and calculates collisions between objects, allowing users to create complex animations or automatically stack vast numbers of objects. The plug-in was developed independently by Eric Soulvie using the modo Plug-in Software Development Kit (SDK) and runs on both the Mac and PC versions of modo 501. Utilizing version 2.77 of the Bullet physics engine, recoil simplifies the setup and execution of complex physical simulations by combining robust collision detection with a variety of constraints, forces and controls, says Soulvie. By simply tagging any mesh item to be dynamic, the object is ready to respond to forces like gravity or collisions from other objects in a modo scene, he adds.

Analyst: white iPhone to sell upwards of one million units
The white iPhone goes on sale Thursday, and Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White tells clients in a note -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) -- that he thinks it will boost sales of the Apple smartphone by more than one million. "This delay has created a certain mystique and scarcity value around the 'white' iPhone 4 that we believe could drive incremental iPhone 4 purchases in the range of 1 million to 1.5 million units per quarter until the iPhone 5 potentially comes to market in September," he said. The white iPhone will go on sale in 28 countries this week. Apple reported a record 18.65 million iPhone sales in the second quarter of its 2011 fiscal year.

Apple releases Q&A on location data
Apple has released a Q&A regarding the brouhaha over location data tracking on the iPhone and 3G-enabled iPad. Here it is in its entirety. 1. Why is Apple tracking the location of my iPhone? Apple is not tracking the location of your iPhone. Apple has never done so and has no plans to ever do so. 2. Then why is everyone so concerned about this? Users are confused, partly because the creators of this new technology (including Apple) have not provided enough education about these issues to date. Why is my iPhone logging my location? The iPhone is not logging your location. Rather, it’s maintaining a database of Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers around your current location, some of which may be located more than one hundred miles away from your iPhone, to help your iPhone rapidly and...
