Two music labels already onboard iTunes 'music locker...
Peter Kafka of "All Things Digital" reports (http://macte.ch/SUOYY) says Apple has already procured deals from at least two of the big four labels (Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony and EMI) within the last two months for its online music locker service. “They’ve been very aggressive and thoughtful about it,” an "industry executive" tells Kafka. “It feels like they want to go pretty soon.” Kafka says industry executives he's spoken to haven’t seen Apple’s service themselves, but say they’re aware of the broad strokes. The idea is that Apple will let users store songs they’ve purchased from its iTunes store, as well as others songs stored on their hard drives, and listen to them on multiple devices, he says.
The cloud-based music locker is almost certain to use the gigantic data center Apple is building in North Carolina. In fact, Apple has completed work on an online music storage service and is set to launch it ahead of Google, "whose own music efforts have stalled,"...

Dearth of iPad 2s due to LED panel concerns, speaker shortages?
Manufacturing issues at Apple led to a shortfall in iPad tablet shipments in the first quarter of the calendar year, prompting research firm IHS iSuppli to cut its forecast for the year, reports "Fox Business" (http://macte.ch/Yx5Fs). IHS iSuppli now expects Apple to ship 39.7 million units for all models of the iPad this year, down from the February forecast of 43.7 million, a 9.1% reduction. Apple's first-quarter supply of the iPad 2 fell short of demand; the company shipped 4.69 million iPads during the quarter. IHS iSuppli says production faced manufacturing difficulties, which combined with strong demand, led to short supplies of the device, notes the research group. The issues, according to sources, include quality concerns with liquid crystal display panels and production shortages of the new speaker.

Flock web browser comes to an end
Stellar Technologies (http://www.stellar-technologies.com) says that support for its Flock social web browser will be discontinued as of April 26. "Since no further security updates will be provided to keep you safe on the web, we encourage all Flock users to upgrade to either Chrome or Firefox. Both are based on the same reliable technologies as Flock, and both are being actively maintained and improved," says The Flock Team. "Also, each of these browsers has a broad selection of add-ons and extensions to customize and extend their capabilities." Since Chrome and Firefox both have very different rendering engines, I wonder what technologies the Flock group is speaking about? They also talk about the extensibility of those browsers, but they make no mention of Safari (WebKit like Chrome) and the fact that it is extensible with plug-ins. -- Dennis Sellers

Greenpeace blasts Apple for its Internet infrastructure
"How dirty is your data?" (http://macte.ch/jYBqf) is a new report from the Greenpeace environmental agency on the energy choices made by IT companies including Apple, Akamai, Amazon.com (Amazon Web Services), Facebook, Google, HP, IBM, Microsoft, Twitter, and Yahoo. Apple doesn't fare well in the report. "How dirty is your data?" highlights the need for greater transparency from global IT brands on the energy and carbon footprint of their Internet infrastructure. With more of our daily rituals taking place online than ever before, the information we generate -- videos, pictures, emails, status updates, news, tweets -- ends up in giant data storage facilities called data centers, such as the one Apple is building in North Carolina. Packed full of computer servers, these facilities consume huge amounts of electricity, amounting to 1.5 to 2% of global energy demand (3% in the U.S.) -- and it's growing at a rate of 12% a year, according to Greenpeace. If the Internet was a country, it...

Laptops fuel 28% year-over-year growth in Mac sales
Apple sold 3.76 million Macs in its fiscal 2011 second quarter, which is 28% growth from the year-ago quarter. That's particularly impressive considering that the overall computer market contracted 3% in that time period, according to the IDC research group. The growth was fueled mainly by the continued popularity of the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro revamp introduced in February, says Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer. Desktop units shipped numbered 1.009 million units; laptop units shipped numbered 2.751 million. Of course, there have been no substantial desktop updates recently, so if a revamped iMac -- with Sandy Bridge processors and Thunderbolt technology -- debuts soon, as is expected, that will jump start desktop sales. This is the 20th consecutive quarter that the Mac has outgrown the PC market overall. The most notable growth was in Asia Pacific, increasing 76% year-over-year. Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook notes Japan, and the US had a surprisingly...

Apple retail stores to welcome one billionth visitor soon
Apple retail stores -- which will celebrate their 10th anniversary in May -- will welcome their one billionth visitor soon, says Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer. For the fiscal 2011 second quarter, Apple saw retail revenue of US$3.19 billion compared to the year-ago -- a growth of 90%. The stores saw a record 71 million visitors compared to 47 million in the year-ago quarter. Oppenheimer says Apple will open 42 new stores in fiscal 2011. Three-fourths of those will be outside the US, including a fifth store in China. The retail stores sold 797,000 Macs, in the fiscal 2011 second quarter, an increase of 32% from 606,000 a year-ago. And he says -- and you knew this was coming -- half of those Macs were sold to those who have never owned a Mac before.

iPod sales down (as expected), iBook sales way up
For its fiscal 2011 second quarter Apple sold nine million iPods, which is down 10.9 million from the year-ago quarter. That's down but still ahead of Apple's expectations, according to Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer. Of course, with the continuing phenomenal success of the iPhone and the iPad, it would be astounding if iPod sales continued to grow. However, that doesn't mean the products are on the way out. They'll be around for a looooong time. The iPod touch accounted over half of the iPod models sold. The iPod is still the top-selling MP3 player in most countries tracked and still accounts for over 70% in the US, says Oppenheimer. The CFO noted that the iTunes Store had its best quarter ever with $1.1 billion in revenue. He made sure to point out that the store now offered a full catalog of Random House e-books. Oppenheimer says that that the iTunes Store now boasts more than 2,500 iBook publishers and that customers have now downloaded more than 100 million books...

There are now 196 carriers in 90 countries. This quarter Verizon, SKT and Saudi Telecom came on board. iPad held 85% media market share in 2010
Apple’s iPad commanded 85% of the market for media tablets in 2010, according to full-year figures reported by ABI Research (http://www.abiresearch.com). The tablet market surged in the second half of the year, but it wasn’t just tablets: according to senior practice director Jeff Orr, “Device categories including netbooks and mobile broadband-enabled eBook Readers showed gains in year-over-year shipment numbers in 2010," he says. "The hype that media tablets were displacing portable computers and dedicated CE device purchases simply didn’t become a reality. With increasing choices for consumers and greater opportunities for businesses to consider ultra-mobile devices, we expect multiple device categories to benefit in the near-term." Samsung’s Galaxy Tab ranked a distant second to the iPad in market share, with about 8%, while Archos’s Internet Tablet range just barely moved the needle at 2%. These top three vendors accounted for 95% of the media tablet market between them. However...

Security researchers at Privacy International (https://www.privacyinternational.org) keeps track of where you go and saves every detail of it to a secret file on the device which is then copied to the owner's computer when the two are synchronized, according to "The Guardian" (http://macte.ch/RcpCR). The file contains the latitude and longitude of the phone's recorded coordinates along with a timestamp, meaning that anyone who stole the phone or the computer could discover details about the owner's movements using a simple program, the article adds. "Apple has made it possible for almost anybody -- a jealous spouse, a private detective -- with access to your phone or computer to get detailed information about where you've been," says Pete Warden, one of the researchers. Only the iPhone records the user's location in this way, say Warden and Alasdair Allan, the data scientists who discovered the file and are presenting their findings at the Where 2.0 conference in San Francisco on...

Wacom (http://www.wacom.com) has announced the US$29.95 Bamboo Stylus, a new input device created specifically for use with the iPad. Due in mid-May, it will offer an "intuitive and natural way to experience note-taking, sketching, drawing, and other forms of creative expression on the iPad," says Rick Peterson, director of Consumer Brands at Wacom Technology Services. The Bamboo Stylus sports a black and silver design with satin-textured metal body and balanced weighting. The tip of the stylus is 25% narrower (6mm vs. 8mm) in diameter than some of the other solutions on the market today, says Peterson. For example, users can improve their input experience with numerous applications developed for iPad, such as Penultimate for note-taking and Autodesk SketchBook Mobile for sketching needs.
