Computer prices on the rise -- which is good news for Apple
For the first time in years, computer prices are on the rise, according to new info from the NPD research group, as reported by the "Wall Street Times" (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405274870468180457601788378719196...). In November, the average retail price of a personal computer sold in the U.S. was US$615, up 6% from last year's $580, which marked a record low, according the NPD Group. Average computer prices have now increased in six of the past eight months compared with 2009 levels, according to NPD data. The rising prices for computers -- including desktops, laptops and low-cost netbooks but not tablets -- is a big turnabout for the $250 billion global computer industry, which for years has coped with sharp price declines even as machines became more powerful, says the "Journal." One factor in the market has been Apple, the article adds. The company increased its U.S. market share to 10.4% in the third quarter from 9.3% a year ago, according to research firm Gartner....

Initial version of Light Peak may use copper
The initial version of Light Peak will use copper instead of light-based technologies, reports "CNET" (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-20025179-64.html?tag=mantle_skin;content), quoting "an industry source familiar with Intel's plans." Developed by Intel and championed by Apple, this proposed technology paves the way for a new generation of extreme computer input and output (I/O) performance, delivering 10Gb/s of bandwidth, with the potential ability to scale to 100Gbs over the next decade, according to David Perlmutter, executive vice president and general manager, Intel Architecture Group. At 10Gb/second, a user could purportedly transfer a full-length Blu-Ray movie in less than 30 seconds. The optical technology allows for smaller connectors and longer, thinner, and more flexible cables than currently possible. Light Peak also has the ability to run multiple protocols simultaneously over a single cable, enabling the technology to connect devices such as peripherals, displays,...

If the iPad is a computer, Apple has 12% share of worldwide...
I've argued repeatedly that the iPad should be considered a personal computer -- and Goldman Sachs hardware analyst Bill Shope agrees with me. In a note to clients on Monday -- as reported by "Tech Trader Daily" (http://blogs.barrons.com/techtraderdaily/2010/12/13/apple-ipad-mac-12-pc...) -- the analyst only sees computer sales growing 8% next year, but is more bullish on tablet computers, especially the iPad. In fact, Shope sees iPad sales surpassing Mac revenue by September 2011. The analyst argues that tablets should be considered part of the personal computer market, in which case Apple’s worldwide computer market share would rise to 12% this fiscal year, from 4.4% at present. Last week DisplaySearch put the Apple tablet in the computer category in its "Quarterly Mobile PC Shipment and Forecast Report." Do so, and that research group says Apple is the number one personal computer maker in the U.S. and number three globally. What's more, Shope expects a 10% price cut on all models...

Cydia plans competitor to Mac App Store
As Apple prepares to launch the Mac App Store next month, a rival effort is underway by Cydia (http://cydia.saurik.com) -- a popular app store alternative destination for the estimated 10% of owners of jailbroken iPhones -- is planning a competitor, reports "PC World" (http://www.pcworld.com/article/213399/apple_nemesis_to_offer_mac_app_sto...?). At a developers conference this weekend, Jay Freeman, the man behind Cydia, The Mac App Store is designed to make it easy for users to find, download and pay for apps, without having to move around various web sites to download their software. "Apple will put every app submitted in the Mac App Store through its infamous approval process. Also, there won't be any trials, in-app purchases or product keys," says "PC World." "However, due to these limitations in the upcoming Mac App Store, Freeman believes that his Cydia alternative for Macs will be a much more attractive platform for developers." Apple recently confirmed that demos, trial...

Future unveils 14 'one-off' mags for the iPad
The magazine publishing company, Future, has unveiled 14 new titles for the iPad, each a tablet-specific niche brand that hadn’t existed in print. However, "each is a timeless one-off, designed to attract a large number of single-copy sales this coming New Year," says "mocoNews" (http://moconews.net/article/419-future-sees-ipad-as-a-bookazine-vehicle-...). Any decision on a regular long-term tablet publishing schedule for Future’s monthly titles will come after these one-offs, perhaps hinting at how publishers are having to find a cost-effective iPad production timetable before going forward, the article adds. It means Future’s tablet strategy looks a lot like its roster of specialist “bookazine” one-offs, which increasingly grace newsagent shelves, says "mocoNews." Future does publish 50 of its printed monthly magazines on iPad as digital replicas distributed through the Zinio digital subscription/mag publishing service. As for tablet-specific editions, Future has published two iPad-...

Paul Allen's lawsuit against Apple, others dismissed
Billionaire investor Paul Allen's patent lawsuit against Apple and other high technology companies has hit a snag as a federal judge in Seattle dismissed the complaint for not describing its allegations specifically enough, reports the "Wall Street Journal" (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405274870405870457601582020637580...). U.S. District Judge Marsha Pechman on Friday set a Dec. 28 deadline for the plaintiff, a company controlled by Allen called Interval Licensing LLC, to file an amended complaint. A spokesman for Allen said it plans to do so soon, calling the judge's order a "procedural issue" that won't halt the case. In August it was announced that a tech licensing company controlled by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen was suing 11 companies, including Apple, for violating patents on “fundamental web technologies” developed by Interval Research, the now-defunct Silicon Valley lab that Allen created with Xerox PARC veteran David Liddle in the 1990s. Apple interested in Nortel's patents?
Last year Nortel sold its optical networking and carrier ethernet business to Ciena for US$769 million and its wireless business to Ericsson for $1.3 billion. Soon it will sell off its patents as well, "among them some thought to be essential 4G wireless technologies like Long Term Evolution (LTE) and Service Architecture Evolution (SAE)," reports "All Things Digital" (http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20101213/everybody-wants-nortels-4g-p...). That IP is drawing a lot of interest from companies such as Apple, Research in Motion and Nokia, "none of which want to see it in the hands of a rival, particularly as 4G’s commercial availability broadens," the article adds. "All Things D," quoted unnamed sources, say all four companies are participating in the auction. Touchscreen chip designer Wintek Corp, battery maker Simplo Technology Co Ltd and AVY Precision, an unlisted maker of covers for electronic products, are among suppliers for the next batch of iPads, the article says. Two could only confirm they were ramping up for a new round of production in the first quarter for components previously supplied for the original iPad, while two said the ramp-up was for a new iPad, notes "Reuters." One of those said the revamped model would feature cameras on the front and rear, while the other said the new model would be slimmer, lighter and have a better resolution display, the article adds...

Jumsoft adds some smartness to its Mail Stationery
Jumsoft (http://www.jumsoft.com) has advanced its array of design templates with the release of Mail Stationery Smart. The latest stationery pack for Apple's Mail contains 100 templates, as well as a bonus pack of 10 holiday greetings. Two-thirds of the Mail Stationery Smart set match the design of other Jumsoft's products for Pages and Keynote, allowing users to assemble a full line of coordinated templates and themes, says Algirdas Unguvaitis, general manager of Jumsoft. The Mail Stationery series is designed specifically for Apple's e-mail program, Mail. While Jumsoft's add-ons for Mail have traditionally tended toward providing users with the ability to enhance personal messages, Mail Stationery Smart contains a wide array of business-oriented templates that are suitable for proposals and newsletters, says Unguvaitis. When combined with corresponding products for Pages and Keynote, these designs can result in a consistent and impressive corporate style, he adds. What's more, as...

Apple has placed three products -- the iPad, the iPhone 4, the 11-inch MacBook Air and the Apple TV -- in TIME's "Best of 2010" list, which includes 50 top ten lists in news and politics, arts and entertainment, science and society, business tech, pop culture and more. Survey: Europeans want an iPad, but balk at the cost
In its annual Christmas shopping survey, Twenga (http://www.twenga.com), a next-generation shopping search engine, asked European Internet users what was their most wanted gift this year. Riding high on all wish lists this year is the iPad, Apple’s best-selling tablet. Its popularity is apparent all across Europe, especially in Spain and France, where 64% and 60% respectively said that they would like an iPad. And Italian users were even more hopeful, with 69% of them crossing their fingers for one this Christmas. However, in Germany and the Netherlands, only 41% and 40% respectively had Apple’s tablet on their Christmas wish lists. With regards to the price, Europeans seem to think that the iPad, despite its appeal, is simply too expensive. Spanish and Italian users feel most strongly about it, with 48% and 47% respectively considering the price too high for their budgets. Twenga asked over 3,000 European Internet users about their Christmas spending budgets for this year and how...

iPad to have more than 2% of North American Web traffic in a...
By the end of 2011, the iPad will generate more than two percent of all North American Web traffic, according to Chitika (http://chitika.com/), an on-line advertising network that's been tracking iPad adoption rates on its ad network (three billion ads served monthly across more than 100,000 sites). As of this month, the iPad accounts for 0.83% of all traffic on Chitika’s network, research director Daniel Ruby tells "All Things D" (http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20101209/ipad-will-generate-2-percent...). At current growth rates, which have been steady since the device’s launch, it should hit 2.3% by the end of next year, the article adds.

Sandy Bridge processors heading to MacBooks?

Intel's newest processor will appear in new MacBooks that will supersede current models, the sources say. Current MacBooks use Nvidia graphics chips along with Intel Core i series and Core 2 Duo processors. However, "CNET" says that, due to the enhanced graphics capabilities of Sandy Bridge, Apple -- at least for now -- has determined that it will not continue using Nvidia's graphics processing units (GPUs) in some models. MacBook models with screen sizes of 13 inches and below are expected to switch to Sandy Bridge-only graphics, while higher-end MacBook Pros are expected to use graphics from AMD, the article adds. Whether Nvidia will still be present in higher-end models is unclear, says "CNET." "If proven true, the rumor is an extremely positive sign for Intel given how notoriously picky Apple is about the components it uses," notes "Gizmodo" (http://gizmodo.com/5710154/is-apple-ditching-discrete-graphics-in-the-ne...). "Apple would also be in a position to no longer release...

Apple releases Aperture 3.1.1
Apple has updated Aperture, its software for pro photographers, to version 3.1.1 (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2518). The update improves overall stability and performance. For example, Aperture 3.1.1 fixes an issue that could cause iMovie ’11 to stop responding while scanning the Aperture library for video clips. It also addresses issues that prevented the Aperture library from appearing in the Media Browser of other applications. You can obtain Aperture 3.1.1 via the Software Updates component of Mac OS X's Systems Preferences app. It requires Mac OS X 10.5.8 or higher.

iPad news apps may diminish newspaper print subscriptions in...
Keeping up with news and current events is the most popular use of the Apple iPad, according to a survey conducted by the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute (http://www.rjionline.org/index.php) at the University of Missouri. The findings indicate more than half of print newspaper subscribers who use their iPad at least an hour a day for news are very likely to cancel their print subscriptions within six months. However, that decision could be influenced by several factors -- especially price, which was mentioned most often. Of the more than 1,600 survey participants: ° Three quarters of respondents spent at least 30 minutes a day consuming news on their iPad, nearly half said they spend an hour or more. ° iPad users are predominantly well-educated, affluent men between the ages of 35 and 64 who tend to be early adopters. ° A positive iPad reading experience is influenced by age and traditional media habits. ° Overall satisfaction and time spent with the iPad is very high. "These...

Costco to quit selling Apple products
The Costco Wholesasle chain is phasing out Apple products, per a mutual agreement between the companies, Chief Financial Officer Richard Galanti told the "Seattle Times" (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2013631005_cost...). Costco had sold iPods and pre-loaded iTunes cards for years, although never at huge discounts. What's more Apple never allowed Costco to sell its products online like other retailers, Galanti said. "In the past couple months, we agreed to wind down," he told the "Seattle Times."

Gartner: worldwide semiconductor market to grow 4.6%
As the semiconductor industry completes one of its most successful years in 2010, the market is positioned for continued, albeit slower, growth in 2011, according to the latest outlook by the Gartner research group (http://www.gartner.com). Worldwide semiconductor revenue is forecast to total US$314 billion in 2011, up 4.6%t from 2010's estimated revenue of $300.3 billion. Worldwide semiconductor revenue is on pace to grow 31.5% in 2010, as the industry is expected to surpass the $300 billion mark for the first time in its history. However, a modest chip correction began in the third quarter of 2010, and Gartner analysts estimate it's going to last four quarters. "Third-quarter sequential semiconductor revenue growth was below the seasonal norm, and company guidance indicates that fourth-quarter growth will also fall short and likely become negative for the first time in six quarters," says Bryan Lewis, research vice president at Gartner. "The third quarter of 2010 was the turning...

Along with support for over 200 gestures, the software has an open source Gesture Library that is fully extensible; gestures can be added, dropped or modified.
