Apple sued over 'shoddy' retina display screens

An Apple laptop owner lodged a putative class action in California federal court on Wednesday accusing the company of tricking consumers into paying premium prices for MacBook Pro computers with "shoddy" retina display screens manufactured by LG Corp., reports "Law 360" (http://tinyurl.com/anaj9ck).

Although Apple advertises the MacBook Pro's liquid crystal display screens as the best of its kind, some of the computers contain LG screens that suffer from brightness, color and image display flaws while others feature better screens made by Samsung Corp., according to the suit. The suit says Apple has "tricked" some customers into buying MacBook Pros not having Samsung screens.

ITC delays ruling in Apple-Samsung patent fight

The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) on Wednesday announced that it will delay final judgment of assertions that Apple infringed on certain FRAND patents owned by Samsung when it made the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, reports "Reuters" (http://tinyurl.com/c8pra2j).

In September an ITC administrative law judge said in a preliminary ruling in September that Apple didn't infringe the patents. The full ITC said it would review the matter. If the full ITC reversed its internal judge and found Apple guilty of infringement, the ITC could order its products banned from the U.S. market.

The ITC now says it will issue a decision on May 31. And it's requested filings on questions related to the effect of banning the Apple products on the public interest and whether there were acceptable substitutes for the Apple products if they were to be banned.

This is all part of the ongoing, global...

Cook to be deposed in ebook legal brouhaha

A judge has ruled that Apple CEO Tim Cook must sit for a deposition in the U.S. government's lawsuit against the company over alleged price-fixing in the ebook market, reports "Reuters" (http://tinyurl.com/d5888dg).

U.S. District Judge Denise Cote in Manhattan granted the Justice Department's request to compel Cook to testify for four hours in the lawsuit, which accuses Apple of conspiring with five publishers to raise e-book prices. The government had argued that Cook likely had relevant information about Apple's entry into the e-books market.

Apple fought the request, saying Cook's testimony would be "cumulative and duplicative" since the government had already deposed 11 other executives at the iPad maker, notes "Reuters."

Small wireless providers backing bills to unlock mobile phones

Regional and rural wireless providers are backing several bills in Congress that would let consumers unlock mobile phones and tablet computers -- such as the iPhone and iPad -- without carriers’ permission, reports "Bloomberg" (http://tinyurl.com/bb9z33g). Big phone companies such as AT&T and Verizon often land exclusive rights to offer the hottest devices, and U.S. rules currently prohibit altering software to let new phones from one carrier to work on other networks, the article notes.

"Smaller carriers have a very difficult time getting access to smartphones and handsets," Steven Berry, president of the Competitive Carriers Association, which represents such companies as U.S. Cellular and Bluegrass Cellular, told "Bloomberg." "The unlocking is one way the consumer can make the decision that I can try someone else who has better coverage in the area where I live or play."

Researchers: Macs aren't immune to malware

Mac computers aren't immune to malware, despite popular opinion to the contrary, Zheng Bu, senior researcher for FireEye (a company that makes anti-malware products), tells the "San Jose Mercury News" (http://tinyurl.com/afvpq8k).

Some Mac users have this perception that the Mac is free from hacks "and that is completely wrong, he says. Kevin Haley, Symantec director of product management for security response, told the "Mercury News" that some Mac users "have let their guard down."

The article says that the Mac is becoming a more attractive target for hackers. Last year, the Flashback Trojan malware infected an estimated 600,000 Macs by appearing to be a browser plug-in but actually stole personal information. In February, Apple said Macs operated by Apple employees were infected with Java-related malware when they visited a software development website.

"Both Apple and Windows need...
