Mac-based security threats up, but still way below Windows
Mac-based security threats jumped in 2011, but still remain far below that of Windows system, according to a posting by F-Secure Labs -- as reported by "NetworkWorld" (http://macte.ch/6v2j7). A total of 58 unique variants were detected from April through December, according to the Labs' Threat Research team. Nearly half, 29, were Trojan-downloaders, which F-Secure defines as a type of Trojan horse program that secretly downloads malicious files from a remote server, then installs and executes them. The F-Secure blog post didn't compare directly the 2011 results with the Mac's 2010 threat numbers, or with Windows' comparable numbers. IT merely asserted that there had been an increase for Mac in 2011, but still very small compared to Windows, notes "NetworkWorld."

e-book lawsuit against Apple amended
Another day, another (updated) lawsuit. Hagens Berman attorneys representing e-book purchasers in a case that claims five major publishers conspired with Apple to fix the price of e-books today filed an updated complaint including new information and allegations. In the class-action lawsuit, consumers claim that the publishers feared Amazon’s US$9.99 pricing model to such a degree that they conspired with Apple to force Amazon to adopt a new agency model in which publishers set prices directly, effectively ending Amazon’s ability to provide consumer-friendly pricing for e-books. After the publishers unanimously and simultaneously adopted the new pricing model, the price of e-books shot up 30%,...

Apple says Android infringes the iPhone's 'slide-to-...
Here we go again ... Apple has fired a legal volley at Samsung for the billionth time. A few hours after pronouncing a ruling on one of Samsung's numerous lawsuits against Apple, the Mannheim Regional Court held a hearing on one of Apple's many infringement lawsuits against Samsung, reports "FOSS Patents" (http://macte.ch/eGbgM). The complaint in question says the Android phone infringes on the iPhone's "slide-to-unlock" utility model. Apple says the feature was unveiled along with the original iPhone in 2007 and subsequently patented with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in October 2011. In 2006 the company also obtained a "utility model" registration for the feature in Germany. The Mannheim Regional Court will pronounce some kind of a decision on March 16. "FOSS Patents" says "this could be a ruling (if the court considers the broader claims of that utility model valid, infringement appears to be beyond reasonable doubt), a stay (pending the aforementioned parallel nullity...

Apple stores may be coming to India
Apple may be opening its retail stores in India soon, following the Indian government's decision to open India's retail sector to 100% foreign direct investment, reports "iPhone Hacks" (http://macte.ch/66tRG). One possible problem: Indian policies require such investments to source at least 30% of the total value of their products from Indian small industries, "which obviously doesn't fit in well with Apple's strategy," the article adds. However, an unnamed member of the India Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion is quoting as saying: "Let Apple finalize its business plan and the investment it wants to make. If they tell us that the 30% sourcing is a problem, at that stage we will look into it."

Hearing slated regarding 'no poach' agreement among...
Next week a class-action civil lawsuit will be heard in San Jose, California, to determine if Apple, Google, Apple, Lucasfilm, Adobe, Intel, and Intuit conspired to eliminate competition for skilled labor. with a "no poach" agreement. In anticipation of the hearing, "TechCrunch" site (http://macte.ch/LtMca) say it's attained evidence from the Department of Justice’s investigation in 2010 which was recently made public for the first time. It appears to support the plaintiff’s case that the defendant companies tried to suppress employee compensation by entering into “no poach” agreements, says "TechCrunch." In 2010, it was revealed that several U.S. tech companies -- including Apple, Google, Intel, Adobe, Intuit and Walt Disney's Pixar unit -- were in advanced talks with the Justice Department to avoid a court battle over whether they colluded to hold down wages by agreeing not to lure away each other's employees. Such practices constitute antitrust behavior.

Loyal users generate 25% more in-app purchases
In-app purchases are the lifeblood of many apps, and although it may seem like getting users to the sale proposition quickly is ideal; a new Localytics study (http://www.localytics.com) finds that building relationships with app users and fostering long-term usage are more important. Of all users in Localytics’ study who made an in-app purchase, 44% didn't do so until they had interacted with the app at least 10 times. On average, a user who makes an in-app purchase will do so 12 days after first launching the app. In research from last year, Localytics -- which provides a real-time mobile app analytics platform -- found that 26% of apps are used only once after being downloaded. As a result, the app publisher community has made a concerted effort to shift away from incentivized downloads towards engagement and customer lifetime value (CLV). With this new data, that shift is shown to be even more important. With a high correlation between highly engaged users and in-app purchases,...
