In the tablet world, Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Barnes and Noble’s Nook Tablet were introduced at considerably cheaper prices than other tablets. In the e-book reader world, some versions of the Kindle and Nook and other readers fell well...

Survey: 36% of iPhone 4S buyers migrated from another platform
A new report/survey from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (http://www.cirpllc.com/) -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) -- found that 21% of iPhone 4S buyers chose Apple's highest capacity 64GB model, while 36% of users migrated from another platform, such as Android, BlackBerry or Palm. The data comes from a survey of customers that bought an iPhone in October, November and December of 2011. From an initial response of 6,316 subjects, CIRP surveyed 365 qualified people for its analysis. The survey also found that AT&T, Verizon and Sprint have maintained their market shares consistently among iPhone owners. However, the availability of the iPhone has also helped the three largest wireless providers in the U.S. take customers from other carriers that do not over the iPhone, most notably T-Mobile. Consumer Intelligence Research Partners provides equity securities research to the investment community. Read more about their report at http://macte.ch/...

Apple was largest consumer of MEMs microphone in 2011
In 2011, Apple became the world’s largest purchaser of microelectromechanical system (MEMS) microphones following the tremendous sales growth of iPhones, headsets and most notably iPads, causing the company to surpass Samsung Electronics to take the top spot. Apple in 2011 increased its procurement of MEMS microphones by 173% to reach 349 million units, up from 128 million in 2010, according to an IHS iSuppli (http://www.isuppli.com). This represented the strongest growth among the major MEMS microphone buyers, allowing Apple to move up one position to take the No. 1 spot in purchases, according to the research group. Apple’s share of MEMS buying amounted to 27% for the year, compared to 20% for Samsung. MEMS microphones are very small devices that employ a pressure-sensitive diaphragm etched on a semiconductor. The microphones are commonly employed in cellphones, headsets, notebook computer and video cameras, replacing conventional electret condenser microphones (ECM) while...

More computer vendors to adopt Thunderbolt
Acer, Asustek Computer and Lenovo are expected to offer ultrabooks based on Intel's Ivy Bridge platform, which supports Thunderbolt in the second quarter of 2012, while Gigabyte Technology will take the initiative to offer Thunderbolt-enabled motherboards, reports "DigiTimes" (http://macte.ch/AAUba), quoting unnamed industry sources." Intel's Ivy Bridge is already set to natively support USB 3.0 technology and will be mainly equipped in mid-range to high-end computers in 2012 and be fully standardized by 2013. However, "DigiTimes" says that, limited by the increasing cost of more than US$20, the company's Thunderbolt technology is only expected to be adopted among high-end notebooks or desktops this year. Running at 10Gbps, Thunderbolt technology can transfer a full-length HD movie in less than 30 seconds, according to Mooly Eden, general manager, PC Client Group, Intel, which co-developed the technology with Apple. The vision for Thunderbolt technology is to move media faster,...

SixtyFour for Mac OS X lets you open apps in 32-bit mode
1951FDG has released SixtyFour 1.0, its new memory optimizer for Mac OS X. It's compatible with any 64-bit-capable PowerPC or Intel Mac running Mac OS X 10.5 or higher (including Lion). SixtyFour was specifically created to force 64-bit apps to open in 32-bit mode for G5-based and 64-bit-capable Intel hardware. It lists apps that will open in 64-bit mode by default and facilitates the changing of a preference to force the apps to open in 32-bit mode. Forcing a 64-bit app to open in 32-bit mode reduces its memory usage significantly and its startup time and an increase in overall system performance, according to the folks at 1951FDG. For an app to be listed it must meet two conditions: the app will open and the app will open in 64-bit mode by default. Other 64-bit apps that don't meet these two conditions won't be listed because they will not open or open in 32-bit mode only. The way SixtyFour works is simple. A selected check box indicates that the application will open in 32-bit mode...
