Apple, Lion Java crashes Yahoo Chess
Posted by Greg Mills Since moving to Lion the first day it was out, I have lost at least 5 chess games on Yahoo/games/chess due to some sort of Java problem. I am winning or losing, (it seems to know when I am winning) and unceremoniously, the Java window goes white and or enlarges some part of the screen and freezes. While this hardly seems important to most people, I hate losing but even more I hate losing because my Java crashes. If anybody at Apple reads this, please fix this. Anyone else having Java problems under Lion? GregMills@Mac.com

MacBook Air a hot seller in Hong Kong
In a note to clients -- as reported by"CNN Money" (http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2011/08/26/the-macbook-air-lands-in-china-an...?), Ticonderoga's Brian White reported that the new MacBook Air was greeted with long lines and stock outs when it arrived in Hong Kong this week. Not only did stores run out of certain MacBook Air models, but also some iPads and iPhone 4s, presumably through a Chinese version of the halo effect. This looks good for the launch of the Apple laptop in mainland China, perhaps as early as next week, says White.

Apple's new CEO to tackle delivering video to televisions?
Apple's new CEO, Tim Cook, faces the challenge of advancing the company's plans for digital video, even as Apple is developing "new technology" for delivering video to televisions, reports "The Wall Street Journal" (http://www.wsj.com) and "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com). Quoting unnamed "people familiar with the matter, the "WSJ" says "Apple is working on new technology to deliver video to televisions," adding that the company has also been in talks over a subscription TV service. New markets, such as digital video and control of the living room, will pose the first "real test" for Cook, who officially took over for Steve Jobs this week, notes "AppleInsider." Of course, this could all tie in to rumors that Apple will release its own HTDV before summer 2012. Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry thinks Apple will launch a new high-definition television in March 2012 with three screen sizes and price points. He thinks the Apple HDTV would be akin to Bose's pricey...

Jobs' resignation not having great impact on Apple...
DigiTimes" (http://macte.ch/Mpr9X), quoting "sources at major suppliers to Apple, including Foxconn Electronics and Quanta Computer," says the companies don't feel that Steve Jobs' resignation as CEO is having much impact on their business so far. His replacement, Tim Cook was already responsible for manufacturing related business before assuming his new title, the article adds. Still, Jobs' resignation may affect the company's brand recognition, creativity and innovation, the sources add. It's matter of how deep the impact will be, depending on whether Apple manages to find another driver of innovation like Jobs for its continued success, says "DigiTimes." Of course, Jobs has been named chairman of Apple's board of directors, so it's not like his impact is totally gone.

Earlier this month it was announced that Apple had won an agreement from Samsung that the South Korean company won’t sell the newest version of its tablet computer in Australia until a patent lawsuit in the country is resolved.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 infringes 10 Apple patents, including the “look and feel,” and touchscreen technology of the iPad, Steven Burley, a lawyer for Apple, told Federal Court Justice Annabelle Bennett in Sydney. Apple sought an Australian...

Reactions positive to Apple's new CEO
The reaction to Tim Cook, Apple's former chief operating office, taking over as CEO of the company after Steve Jobs stepped down on Wednesday has been almost overwhelmingly positive. There weren’t any realistic candidates for CEO other than Tim Cook, Fred Anderson, who served as chief financial officer until 2004, told "Bloomberg BusinessWeek" (http://macte.ch/8Bo3n). “He knows the soul of Apple, and he makes the trains run on time,” Anderson said. “It would be very risky for the board to go outside unless they had a real superstar, and I don’t know of anybody.” Cook led the company when Jobs was out during his three medical leaves since 2004. Though he’s a counterpoint to Jobs’s more emotional personality, the men are two sides of the same coin, Mike Janes, who used to run Apple’s online store, told "BusinessWeek." Both are demanding leaders with an attention to detail. “Despite their style differences, their intensity is basically equal,” said Janes, now the chief executive officer...

Jobs resignation as CEO doesn't mean the sky is falling
By Dennis Sellers As you might expect: some say the sky is falling. Shares in Apple Inc. have dipped more than 5% in after-hours trading following the news that Steve Jobs had resigned as CEO from the company and former Chief Operating Office Tim Cook has taken his place. 8:15 pm (Central), Wednesday, AAPL was trading at US$356.47, a loss of $19.71 (-5.24%). There's no denying the importance of Jobs to Apple. He's a true visionary. However, Apple is now in the capable hands of Jobs' hand-picked team, whom almost certainly shares his vision. "One of the most important things that Steve Jobs did in Apple 2.0 is rebuilding the culture," Mike McGuire, analyst at Gartner, told "CNN" (http://money.cnn.com/). "But it's not quite the 'cult of Steve' like many believe. He built incredible teams that didn't quite have free reign, but had plenty of room to innovate. It's going to be hard work, but Apple will be fine without him." What will almost certainly happen now is that it will be less of...

Apple has published a letter from Steve Jobs to the Board of Directors and the Apple Community as follows: To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community: I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come. I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee. As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple. I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role. I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you. Steve Tim Cook, previously Apple's Chief...

Apple tops US retail store sales per square foot
A new study by "RetailSails" (http://retailsails.com/) -- a resource for fact-based insight and analysis covering the U.S. retail industry -- says Apple is top US retailer based on retail sales per square foot. The study says Apple has sales of $14,109 billion in 327 stores with an average size of 7,886 gross square feet. That's 5,626 sales per square foot. The figures are based on global results for the most recently reported trailing four quarters (through fiscal quarter three that ended June 25. Apple is almost two times ahead of their closest competitor (Tiffany & Company). "It’s not surprising Apple leads the pack, but it is quite shocking by how far ahead of the competition they are, especially considering the company only has 10 years of retail experience," says "RetailSails." Other chains in the "RetailSales" list are: Tiffany & Company, Coach, Iululemon Athletics, GameStop, Costco Wholesale, Whole Foods Market, Best Buy, Zale Jewelers, Walgreens, Sam's Club,...

T-Mobile to also carry the iPhone starting in October?
Yesterday "The Wall Street Journal" (http://macte.ch/dXmxF), quoting unnamed "people familiar with the situation," said Sprint Nextel Corp. will begin selling the iPhone 5 in mid-October. Now "MacTrast" (http://macte.ch/invBz) reports T-Mobile will jump aboard the Apple smartphone wagon at the same time. Quoting an anonymous source at T-Mobile, the article says the iPhone 5 will operate at 3G speeds on T-Mobile US network. Current unlocked iPhone 4 units can only operate at at 2G “edge” speeds on T-Mobile’s network, and lack certain network-dependent features, such as Visual Voicemail. Top U.S. carrier Verizon Wireless and No. 2 AT&T will begin selling the iPhone 5 in mid-October as well, according to the "Journal." Sprint had more than 52 million subscribers at the end of the second quarter, compared with 106 million for Verizon and nearly 99 million for AT&T. T-Mobile has almost 34 million subscribers.

Apple's dominance in tablet market grows
Capitalizing on its shrewd strategy, as well as its competitors’ stumbles, Apple Inc. is set to increase its iPad shipments at a faster rate than previously expected in 2011 and beyond, causing the global media tablet market to exceed growth expectations during the next few years, according to data from analysis provider IHS (http://www.isuppli.com). Global media tablet shipments now are expected to rise to 60 million units in 2011, up 245.9% from 17.4 million in 2010. The previous forecast issued in May predicted shipments of 58.9 million for 2011. The new figures will help propel media tablet shipments to 275.3 million units in 2015, compared to the previous forecast of 262.1 million. “All the momentum in the media tablet market is with Apple right now,” says Rhoda Alexander, senior manager, tablet and monitor research for IHS. “The competition can’t seem to field a product with the right combination of hardware, marketing, applications and content to match up with the iPad....

Galaxy, Ace smartphone sales banned in Europe
The Rechtbank 's-Gravenhage (a Dutch court in the city of The Hague) has issued a formally Europe-wide preliminary injunction against Samsung's Galaxy S, Galaxy S II and Ace smartphones -- but not the Galaxy tablets -- at Apple's request, reports "FOSS Patents" (http://macte.ch/4slR8). The decision follows a hearing held on Aug. 10 and 11. Apple had filed an injunction at a court in The Hague on three patents, copyright as well as design infringements, to stop the sale of some Samsung products in the Netherlands and block their distribution in the EU via the Netherlands. The Dutch port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe, and a key point of entry for imported goods for the European Union. "The status of that patent varies between different countries ... " says Florian Mueller, writing for "FOSS Patents." "While the patent was originally designated to more than 30 member countries of the European Patent Organization (which is not an EU organization and also includes non-EU members...

iPad-powered mass transit kiosks catch a ride on Charleston...
Slicker Interactive (http://www.slicker.com) and Charleston (South Carolina) Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) have launched the first iPad-powered mobile kiosk that gives CARTA riders a whole new perspective of Charleston.   The kiosks -- installed on all 12 trolleys servicing the Carta Dash routes - allow bus riders to interact with and search Slicker's City Slicker app. The app provides users with information about cultural sites and businesses. In addition to the interactive kiosk, the iPad powers a flat-screen monitor that displays videos and images of establishments the bus is approaching.   One of the champions and primary backers of the new kiosks has been Charleston Mayor Joe Riley. "I am pleased to announce that Charleston is the first city in the world to benefit from City Slicker's brand new technology," he says. "There is so much content and useful information, it will be a tremendous help and first class guide for anyone traveling in our city. The additional...

Analyst firm evaluates the iPad’s Impact on accelerating the CPQ...
A report from the Gartner analyst firm (http://www.gartner.com) has found that prospecting, account management and configure, price, quote (CPQ) processes will benefit from enterprise investment in the iPad. This June 2011 report by Michael Dunne, and analyst at Gartner, entitled "iPads: Their Impact on the Top Six Sales Processes," evaluates the growing usage of the Apple iPad, and its effect on sales processes, with CPQ ranking third most likely to provide high impact benefits. “Mobility innovations will resonate with field sales forces that have to capture requirements, position products, assemble deals, generate proposals and quotes, and modify deals over the course of negotiations,” says Dunne. “More promising use cases involve sales teams working on proposals while on the road and in home offices to assemble deals for simple services, as well as for ship-to-order and simpler assemble-to-order (i.e. limited variation of components) solutions.” Cameleon Software, which...

ParticleCreator 3 for OS X- iOS developer tool creates particle...
BuBuCompany has announced ParticleCreator 3.0 for Mac OS X (http://blog.naver.com/h0965/70105136676), an update to their developer tool designed to simplify the creation of particle effects for use in Cocos2d games. Built to replace the slow work of adjusting code variables to create a desired particle effect, the graphical tool allows developers to generate, preview, modify, test, and save a customized effect. Once the effect is saved, ParticleCreator automatically generates the Cocos2d code, which can be added to the project's Resource Folder. ParticleCreator sports a Settings Window with sliders/number fields that control every aspect of the particle's appearance and behavior. The software has a single settings window from which users can choose one of four buttons: Graphic Configure, Particle Configure, Code Make, and Testing. A Preview window displays the animated particle(s) in real-time, or it may be displayed fullscreen. ParticleCreator requires Mac OS X 10.6 or higher. It...

App Tamer ready for Lion
St. Clair Software has released App Tamer 1.1 (http://www.stclairsoft.com/AppTamer/), an update of the app for Mac OS X 10.5 and higher that gives you control over your applications so you can save battery and CPU (central processing unit) power. The new version uses less of the CPU itself and fine tunes its compatibility with OS 10.7 Lion. Some Mac applications, especially web browsers, continue running tasks or animations even when they're supposed to be idle in the background. This can consume valuable processing power and reduce battery life. App Tamer's AutoStop capability automatically pauses these applications when you switch away from them, and then restarts them when you click back to them. This frees your CPU and reduces power consumption, according to the folks at St. Clair. App Tamer shows the average percentage of your processor(s) being used by each app, and graphically displays a history of CPU usage. You can enable AutoStop for any application, as well as change its...
